Sheffield Casbah Closes; DiS Tour Date Venue Change

The Casbah in Sheffield has today closed its doors to bands indefinitely, and has postponed all gigs booked from Saturday 1st May.

Promoter Mark Burton states that it's due to circumstances beyond their control, and made the following statement "Myself and The Casbah would like to thank all bands / musicians / agents and managers that have been involved with The Casbah."

The Casbah will still put on club events and the remaining shows this week will still go ahead.

This means that the DiS tour show featuring CHiKiNKi, The Koreans and Kaiser Chiefs on Monday 10th May has now been forced to move to The Fez in Sheffield - which we're reliably informed is a much nicer venue anyway. Doors are at 7:30. Tickets are £5.00 in advance, call the box office on 0114 2767093. A local band may now be joining the bill - please post any suggestions of top Sheffield bands ideal for the show below (we've already asked a few, but as it's relatively short notice...).

DiScuss: Are you sad to see it go? Do you believe the rumours that it's because local bands didn't pull enough people? Are there better venues in Sheffield anyway?

Resident of Sheffield here:

If you want a good Sheffield band, I suggest Judan Suki (Cymande meets Rolling Stones meets Black Grape meets Embrace), Arctic Monkeys (Sheffield's answer to Jet) or Harrissons (Sheffield answer to Libertines)

You've been reliably informed correctly. The Casbah always was, and probably still is, a shithole, but i liked it all the same. Never thought I'd see as many loons at gigs as I did there.

But now I've been to Glasgow.

NOOO! The Casbah was my faaaaaaavourite li'l venue in the whole world! Yeah, it's a shit hole, but a shit hole with a helluva lot of character. It's the kinda place where sweat drips from the walls - I like that!

What a load of crap.

GET TO THE CASBAH TONIGHT AND SEE THE APE DRAPE ESCAPE.

They are ace, skill and brill.!!

And it's the Casbah's last gig.

You'll be sorry you missed it.

Re: Sheffield Casbah Closes; DiS Tour Date Venue Change

the best Casbah night was back when the Yo-Yos were supported by Groop Dogdrill and a little known band called the Hives.

About 20 people got in early for the support band from Sweden and they just stormed the place acting just as he does now when playing a sold out venue.

"Hello sheffield we are your new favorite band" he was correct too.

Casbah's a great venue, it;s grubby and smell but that's the way it should be. It will be a bit dent in the sheffield gig scene but then maybe Sheffield people don't appreciate what they've got till it's gone.

Go tonight to see the Ape Drape Escape anyway.

Re: Sheffield Casbah Closes; DiS Tour Date Venue C

Yup, the Casbah was/is a complete shithole. They sacked their staff regularly, the beer was overpriced, and has zero atmosphere. Long live The Fez Club. Oh, and the Grapes for sheer pub charm.

The Casbah owner Bob (not promoter Mark, he's cool) is a cock and recently issued a banning order to people who write for a local free magazine called sandman because they weren't reviewing enough of their gigs.

A good venue which hardly ever gets used of gigs in Sheffield is the room at the NMB hallam students union. It's easily as big as the Leadmill and the sound system there is fantastic. The people that run the place are too scared to put bands on there which is a shame, just look at how well the Fuzz Club at Sheff Uni does.

CHORA! Try and get Chora to play. They're an amazing 3-piece, made up of Sheffield Hallam Uni students. No vocals, but more than made up for by sheer musical talent, originality and songwriting ability. Maybe a slightly harder version of mogwai is the closest comparison I can make. I've seen them 3 times now, and they've completely blown me away every time. As far as I know, they all finish their degrees this year, and from then on they're going full-time with the band. Look out for the name - you heard it here first. CHORA

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
