Axe-manglers and fret-fondlers rejoice! It seems that rock is, once again, the supreme force in contemporary music.
Official stats from the BPI show that rock bands are currently outselling pop bands - acts prioritising guitar licks over grindin' hips are flogging 36 per cent of all albums sold. Pop albums make up only 25 per cent of total albums sold.
Seven of 2005's top ten rock albums were by British bands, leading to BPI chairman Peter Jamieson offering the following comment:
"Record companies support a hugely diverse range of genres. But ultimately it's the music fan who decides what's successful.
"Last year they decided by some margin that 2005 was predominantly a year of home-grown British rock bands."

?
only 2 out of those 10 are rock albums surely???
Are you saying David Gray doesn't rock!
I'm sure I've seen him head banging on stage
everyone an innovation
its like looking at anyone's parent's CD collection in their car when youre 'up' visiting them
I've said it before and I'll say it again
I think Demon Days is really quite good.
The rest sucks donkey balls, but you know that.
So 'rock'
means 'music produced using a guitar... of any form'
Surely The Killers, Gorillaz and Kaiser Chiefs are pop music?
Although they're shit bands,
its good news. Music people have written themselves, rather than music written for a boy band is selling the most. Finally people are recognising talent.
Yeah, you're right
I think all those people write their own stuff.
Yes
i hate it when people try and pretend that music which obviously has its roots in rock music isn't rock music because its not rocking enough.
If its guitars, drums, singing and not blues or jazz then its rock of some sort.
I find this whole subject
leaves me feeling vaguely unclean...
aaaaaaaaah, the indiesnobbery.
