The Modern axed from singles chart

Very ordinary electro-poppers The Modern have seen their hit single 'Industry' booted from the singles charts after it was revealed that certain 'fans' downloaded rather too many copies.

It turns out that friends and relatives of the five-piece bought many copies of the song online, leading to it charting at an impressive number 13 (unlucky for some, eh?). 'Cause that's really not fair - although it didn't stop Nizlopi, whose fans downloaded multiple copies of 'The JCB Song' - the Official UK Charts Company ditched it from their top 40.

A band spokesperson said: "Due to over-enthusiastic members of the band's fans and family, an unacceptable number of records were digitally ordered per person online.

"The band are keen to stress they thank their fans for their loyalty and support, and are saddened by the OCC's decision but understand the integrity of the charts must be upheld."

DiScuss: Fair enough, or should sales simply be sales, whoever's buying them? Didn't some girl buy 84 copies of a Victoria Beckham single from one store once? Fishy business...

"friends and relatives of the five-piece bought many copies of the song online"

how dare they.
chart rules really are a pile of wank.

So could I go into a shop and buy 30 copies and say...

..."I'm a teacher and these other 29 are for my pupils?"

WUT?

hmm

Well, it is uber-ghey in the first place and I'm glad they were dumped from the chart but I'm guessing they wouldn't have been disqualified if their families had bought multiple copies from Woolworths. As long as they're paying for them I don't see a problem.

Apart from the obvious shadiness, which is no worse than major pop marketing shoving Shane Ward down everyone's throats.

yes

cos it's EDUCATIONAL.
actually... wut?

.

I only wish I had enough friends to get me to number 13 in the singles charts.

does that mean

that 'candle in the wind' is no longer really the biggest selling single ever?

weren't people buying entire trolleys full of copies when everyone went diana-gay? and cos it was for 'charity'.

They've not really lost out much have they?

They're getting quite a lot of publicity from this - probably more than they would have it the chart position still stood.

Any won't they still end up with the royalties from the sales?

Watkins

Ask Tom Watkins (he of East 17 fame) how many copies he bought on www.hmv.co.uk...

It wasn't fans buying multiple copies, but an over zealous manager too arrogant to think his thoroughly average band would get caught.

Well it

obviously cant be that good if the only people buying it was thier friends in the first place! ha ha

but this means

that anyone with a couple of hundred quid or so can sabotage a release and have it kicked out of the charts by multiple downloading

you could theoretically block the entire recorded out put of Daniel Powter for instance

interesting

fLOL

That's great!

When im rich i'll make sure nobody ever has to hear James Blunt again!

I'll buy every copy of his single making clear that "i am his best friend" in every store i go to.

Then we can all have a bloody good bonfire!

but if we had a bonfire

the fumes would be toxic and we'd all die.

james blunt has us where he wants us.

hahahaha

barely anyone came to their Purple Turtle gig last week and now this...I feel sorry for them...

Yeah

but what a way to go!

It would be like a mass suicide cult all for the demise of James C*unt!

But then again, he would probabaly think we did it coz we loved him then write a tribute song in honour of us...

DAMN YOU BLUNT!!!

I feel more sorry for them

that they have Tom Watkins as their manager

In answer to the comment about Tom Watkins...

Please see the following post which details what happened...
For all you conspiracy theorists out there, sorry to dissapoint but it doesn't have much to do with Tom.

I pre-orderd my copy

of Industry through the band. When it arrived, it was clear that it had been ordered by one person from the suppliers and then shipped on to me separately. If the OCC think this is sharp practice, they are bloody idiots.

These weren't free or otherwise dubious copies - they were paid for by fans. However, we WERE told that if the five tracks (inc remixes) were downloaded from itunes, these would count as five separate sales rather than one purchase. Whether this was the reason for the foul up I'm not sure.

Leave The Modern alone!

I have been following this band for a year now and think they got a bad enough deal getting thrown out of the charts without nasty comments from PeterWhite that Tom Watkins bought singles to get them in the charts.
They got to number 13 in the midweeks after those on-line sales were taken off. The 5 bulk sales by family members and fans of the band only total about 250 cds but because they found out to be family members it was deemed unfair to the charts.
I have also met their manager and after seeing Mr Watkins on TV, I can tell you it is not him. Its the music that counts and in my opinion The Modern rock!

Hmmm....

....as much as I dislike The Modern (but for some reason love Performance) I have to agree that it seems a tad harsh. Bless them. Its a shame they didn't do it with Jane Falls Down which almost qualified as an actual song.

The Modern and wicked!

They don't deserve to be kicked out of the charts but they have and they've taken it on the chin! I think Industry is a wicked tune and it's such a shame that this has happened but am positive that they are gonna be massive!

@ snow_brigade - I will forgive you for not liking The Modern coz I think Performance are shite! xx

the modern aren't very good.

!

Back when I worked at the local HMV (I'm not proud) a dad came in and bought 24 copies of his son's single, all on separate reciepts (see chart rules for why), he then came in the the next day and wanted to buy 20 more, but I was serving him this time and refused, being as it's against rules and the guy who served him before didn't know.

Record compies do this all the time though, downloading's just made it easier for them.

The guy's son was in VS, just so you know.

It's the oldest trick in the book

Common practice in the 60s - Don Arden did it all the time. However it's easy to see that friends and family members will naively buy multiple copies to 'help out' but also to give freebies to their friends/colleagues in a show of "look how clever my son/daughter/brother-in-law's mate's cousin's drinking pal's former classmate is" and not necessarily in a cynical ploy to chart.

Would The Modern

even scrape the top 40 if it wasn't for their sucker-relatives buying up all the copies?

knowing a girlfriend

of one of the Modern, i notice that they have been going round and PAYING people to order the song. the management co gave them money to do just that!

wrong!

Has no one esle noticed...

That from the sample of industry on their website the verse sounds like Every step you take by The Police and the chorus sounds like Aqua?

Not only this but they look like Aqua.

Just my opinion but any band who are inspired by Aqua and managed by the spawn of Easy 17 should be deported to Holland for crimes against music regardless or not of chart fixing.

And now after hearing the track "Sometimes" I'll be infoming The Human League and Deepeche Mode to send in the lawyers.

Nah...

If its educational, just buy one copy and then copy that for your students. It's fair use if its educational, and thats the law!

Rubbish!

What a load of crap! As if the management company would do that!! Its more than what their life is worth!

These conspiracy theories just keep getting better and better!hehe

A band that look and sound

like something from the past...

Welcome to the 21st Century.

I love The Modern.
