Post-rock kings Mogwai have been forced to cancel dates on their tour due to health problems.
Mogwai drummer Martin Bulloch was rushed to hospital following the band's ATP performance in New York last night and the band have been forced to cancel their dates in the US and Canada.
A posting on Mogwai.co.uk reads thus:
We are sad to announce that we have had to cancel our remaining American and Canadian shows due to ill health. Our other dates in Europe and Japan will be going ahead as planned. We will re-schedule the shows in 2009.Martin explains what happened:
I was taken into hospital last night almost immediately after the show at ATP. I've been having some problems with my pacemaker for the duration of the tour and it unfortunately culminated in me being sent to the emergency room. The doctors there initially thought I would have to have corrective surgery at a larger hospital nearer NYC but I have been given the all clear to travel home on the understanding that I go straight to my cardiologist on arrival back in Scotland.
To be honest, I'm really bummed about having to go home and feel for the folk who had bought tickets for our upcoming shows but i can honestly say it would be almost impossible for me to carry on at this point as my pacemaker has broken skin and the surrounding area has become infected.

This is terrible news
They played an absolute blinder last night, and they were all so happy and cheerful, both before and during their performance. Nothing during the gig indicated there was something wrong with Martin.
Let's hope he gets well soon.
Well, very glad I didnt buy tickets to see
them and fuck buttons in montreal tomorrow night.
Oh my
I hope he's ok for the apollo!! Get well sooon! x
Martin is such a nice guy
I wish him a speedy recovery.
He has a pacemaker?
Woah./
didnt he sell his old one
on ebay or something for charity?
correct
this situation sounds a little bit grim, infected area round the heart, eeshk! hope he'll be ok
AW SH!T
I was looking SO forward to this, bought extra tix to drag friends along too.
Hope Martin gets better soon and that they really do reschedule those dates - they only had a few gigs left on the tour.
If I remember correctly...
...Mogwai used to use pseudonyms. Martin's was Bionic because of his pacemaker. When Brendan O'Hare drummed for them he was given the name 'The Relic' on account of his age. Other names were Plasmatron and Captain Meat, but I can't remember who used them.
plasmatron
is Stuart, Captain Meat is John, Demonic is Dominic, and yeah Martin is Bionic. I'm not sure if Barry ever got one cos he joined afterwards... but on the mogwai forum he posts as "Moccasynth"
