Stroking up: Pharrell begs Julian Casablancas for Strokes production role
After this last week, seems a fair amount of feeling up under the table between The Strokes and Pharrell Williams, with the renowned Neptunes member currently being tabled as the New York garage outfit’s future producer.
NME reports that Williams apparently begged Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas for the role, with Albert Hammond Jr confirming the speculation that this might happen.
“Julian mentioned that Pharrell wanted to produce it,” said the mop-topped guitarist, “and that he had certain issues. I’m up for anything. I’m a fifth of the band, so whatever we choose to do as a band, I’m there with it.”
After recent production for Madonna’s Hard Candy, Ashley Simpson’s Bittersweet World and a previous foray into garage rock manning the decks for The Hives last effort, The Black And White Album, it would seem fair to label the position for Pharrell as one removed from looking after Slim Thug. Appears that young Hammond is keen to harness some of those astute beats though:
“It [the album] doesn’t have to be in one category. Sometimes rock music can be influenced by hip-hop beats, and getting drum sounds are a big thing in rock. Maybe a hip-hop producer can get a cooler sound.”
Hammond Jr releases ¿Cómo Te Llama? on July 7. N*E*R*D’s new effort, Seeing Sounds, is out now.

That Albert Hammond album was really great.
Looking forward to the new one. NOT looking forward to a Pharrel inflected Strokes album though.
Latest Hives album?
'The Black and White Album', surely
The following is 100% true:
A couple of years ago, I was in some London club called The Rex. I was out of my tree, but a girl I was with told me that Pharrell was over in the VIP area (he was over to present something at the Brit Awards). I sauntered over, but couldn't catch a glimpse of him. Never mind, I thought, another drink will do instead
After pay £9 for a JD and coke (I remember it well), I turned from the bar and bumped into this dude. Turns out Pharrell was in there, and I'd almost just spilled his drink
I apologised, and he was cool about it. We shook hands (his were quite clammy, if I remember correctly), and I began some gushy outpour about how awesome some of his Neptunes work was. For some reason, I then inexplicably asked him if he ever fancied producing The Strokes (first band that popped into my head as I think I'd been listening to them that day, or something)
He said he loved them, and that he'd love to work with them some day. At the time I thought he was just humouring me, but it turns out he's a man of his word
I could've had a scoop, three years in advance!
Much as I love Hella Good
I will be blaming you if this happens :)
