Radio 1's Big Weekend: well, it is free

Radio 1 have announced the bands and acts who’ll be playing their big annual blowout, Madonna** the most notable name in a shuffled pack of notable no-ones for Big Weekend 2008.

The singer, who smells of patchouli oil and olives and doesn’t, apparently, have jaundice, will be at Mote Park in Maidstone, Kent on Saturday the 10th of May to promote the forthcoming release of new studio effort Hard Candy (28 Apr).

Joining her on that day will be Usher, The Fratellis and Duffy, among others, while the second leg of the extravaganza will see appearances from The Kooks, **Nelly and Adele - full details of what we know about both so far below:

Main stage - Saturday the 10th of May ** Madonna Usher The Fratellis Robyn Duffy
Scouting for Girls The Feeling The Hoosiers**

Main stage - Sunday the 11th of May The Kooks Nelly Adele Newton Faulkner Goldfrapp The Enemy
Pigeon Detectives One Republic**

Still with us? Welcome, search engine fodder – those are the full line-ups for both days according to Chris Moyles, who announced them on his show this morning. More updates through the day on the nation’s flagship radio station, who released 30,000 free tickets for the weekend at 8am this morning. Register here.

Free?

They should be paying us to go and watch such dross.

The Counting Crows Wireless day

will be gutted that their attempts to host the worst 'festival' ever have well and truly been blown out of the water.

I've registered

I'd love to see Nelly.

Newton Battenburg Faulkner

...a damn fine law firm.

It's...

truly a thing of beauty. Replace Goldfrapp with the View, and it'd be literally perfect.

The added bonus is that you'll get Chris Moyles and Scott Mills

with this one. Along with a selection of other detestable R1 djs, hopefully with George lamb a special bonus.

These line-ups are comically bad.

I'm hoping

That the second stage is actually alright-ish. It's fairly local and the other half thinks it'll be a good day out.

madonna confuses me

isn't she like 60 or something now?

Everybody sign up for tickets

And just don't turn up.

hahahahahahaha!!!!

MAIDSTONE!

MADONNA!

CHAVS!

Take ME be back to KIAD!

In that picture

is Madge doing a GG Allin tribute and taking a shit on the stage to throw at the audience?

that'll show them bastards!

Who do they think they are? Putting on a lineup consistent with the majority of their listeners' tastes, and for free as well!

Why do we always have to see

between Madonna's ageing haggard legs, fucking knocks me sick.

alrite

VadgeimeanMadge?

Change the picture

please

The sad thing is

I was actually planning on registering for this. Madonna's the only reason I'd go, and that's only to say I had.

Second thoughts, I wouldn't even want to do that these days - sigh.

LOL

a truly terrible lineup. but very radio 1 i must give them that.

Ex-fucking-actly

They can stay at home and listen to hardcore punk 7"s like the rest of us. Grr.

I wonder how many people will be torn between this and the Pitchfork ATP.

^this

thisthisthisthisthis

If you've paid your TV licence

then it's not free is it?

Truly terrible

Since its free and local and all that, I thought it might be worth going along - I've never paid any attention before but isn't there usually someone worth seeing as long as you don't have to pay anything?

what's even worse is that I have to listen to people at work talking about 'the quality lineup'. One guy is particularly excited about seeing Newton Faulkner. They look at me with perplexed expressions when I tell them I'll give it a miss.

why maidstone?

it's a horrible horrible horrible place....but atleast it's not chatham!!

strange

there's usually a couple of good/passable acts on the OBW line-ups.. mysteriously absent this time around.
i think there's at least two other stages though so they'll probably have SOMETHING decent on them anyway.

Two other stages announced

Could be worse. I don't get the DJ sets things though with dance acts. Like, is Pendulum or Justice DJ sets actually interesting? Or similarly, the Radio1 DJs doing sets.
Will register anyway.

Jesus. Do you think I could extort someone

via eBay if I got one?

I like that even on the unsigned

stage, the acts are still bad, outlaw and twisted wheel

quote from some guy:

"I'm quite excited that The Fratellis are back again. I had shivers last year watching their live set on the red button.
"

the main stage is a load of bollocks

I'm sticking to the 2nd stage which has Editors, Futureheads (although I hate them), WAS, Foals, Vampire Weekend on the Sat, and The Raconteurs, Black Kids, Hot Chip, and Justice on the Sunday, amogst other bands. Considering it's free and about an hours drive I'm up for that, so it's a good thing the likes of you aren't registering, although even then I've probably got fuck-all chance of getting tickets.

she's 49

you wish you could look that good at that age, regardless of gender.

.

"I'm quite excited that The Fratellis are back again. I had shivers last year watching their live set on the red button"

...Alzheimer's?

x

What did people expect?

It's Radio 1?! Their version of cutting edge and new is something just signed up to a major after 2 years in the underground...like CSS or Biffy Clyro.
