The Apples In Stereo sign to Elijah Wood's new label

Weirdie-indie-rockers The Apples In Stereo have put pen to paper on a deal with Simian Records, the label operated by actor Elijah Wood in conjunction with Yep Roc.
The band's new album, New Magnetic Wonder, has been scheduled for a March 2007 release. DiS editor Colin Roberts has been overheard calling it "joyous pop glee". And he's a man who knows his glee, alright.
The four-piece are expected to play May's ATP Festival - ATP vs The Fans (May 18-10, Minehead Butlins) - alongside the likes of Sparklehorse, Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies (or Youthmovies, if you like), and Modest Mouse. We know of a few other confired acts that we can't tell you about, too; we'd best keep quiet 'til ATP have listed said bands on their site.

great band

TWATS
am i the only person who is totally flabberghasted about the peoples choice? Arcade Fire? Apples in Stereo? PJ Harvey? The Flaming Lips? Modest Mouse? TV on the Radio?
Now this isn't a jibe at the bands by any respect but come on people surely ATP is better than this look at previous line ups. We need something different. Not something that you could probably catch at next years V Festival. So come on people, lets get something good happening. Fingers crossed they never let this happen again.
Merry Fucking Christmas.
yeah
cus steve albini is on the phone right now to mr branson booking shellac in the nme stage at next years V.
Good One
you'll note that shellac have been invited by the foundation and only register at number 47 in the voting chart. I'm talking about people who will tour openly, people who will probably play other festivals. where are the artists who you never get to see. I'm not trying to be alternative, I'm just thinking of all the great bands who i've seen at ATP that have never or rarely come back to play in the UK. not people that will be around and around and around again. i'm just thinking that people could get together and get some bands that may not otherwise come to the UK to come and play. you know?
I agree
100% with you. ATP vs. The Fans is a bad idea.
I agree too,
thats why 2 of my votes are going to the Halo Benders and the Coctails, 2 bands that have never played the UK as far as I know. You gotta stir it up.
not so much a bad idea
more so a flawed one. i'll go anyway cos the bands will still be good. but unless they get bjork and pavement then the whole voting thing will suck. i'm sure the foundation will continue to book good acts. i mean they've just added the books, and akron family, notwist, domakesaythink, and shellac are all fine by me. so we shall see. i'm sure someone will be upset whatever the outcome. wiiiiiiiiiii!
the thing is
the fans didnt pick shellac! the atp folks did, and now they're asking us to pick people who havent played before? silly people.
but...
i said that duder
thats true
i was wrong. damn me.
I think ATP works better
when its dictatorial, i.e. one band/person picking one day/the whole weekend. With the fans one its going to be a scattershot of stuff, some of which you'll like and probably a lot of which you wont be keen on. And because all those bands so far metioned have (largely) toured extensively recently and/or had relatively high-profile releases it doesnt have the same level of anticipation & excitement, certainly in comparison to groups like negative approach, the dead c or double leopards being announced thats for sure. Arcade Fire? Pffft. Next it'll be radiohead.
By the way Im not just saying this to provoke a reaction, I love going to ATP, I just think this particular one pales in comparison to previous line-ups.
Spooky
you aren't my friend martyn are you?
cos you sound just like him.
'fraid not
this is tom. two people who whinge in a similar style about something they really like? AND living in the same city? To quote Joey from Blossom, "Whoooooaaah"
It's a great idea
But so far the voting has let it down. I agree, the lack of imagination on the list so far is staggering. There's also a massive amount of wishful thinking at play (Bjork, PJ Harvey, Pavement(??!!)).
The great thing about ATP is being exposed to great unknown music, but don't forget half of the line-up is in the capable hands of the organisers, so that's not being completely sacrificed. And there's a way to go yet -- so let's just hope the rest of us that are still to buy tickets do our voting with a bit more care. Future of the Left are going at the top of my list (and yeah yeah, I know Mclusky have played before, but this is different).
And also, I am well chuffed that Modest Mouse are playing, so this audience vote thing isn't all bad.
IN FACT!!!
even the organisers want you to use ur minds...
and i quote "Keep up the good work and maybe pick some bands who have never played before!!!"
so stop fannying around people and tell your friends to stop being lame.
:)
great band
i know what you mean
i was just being a sarcastic bastard. i voted for all bands that id not get a chance to see otherwise, save for charlottefield but just because i love them and they deserve to play something like atp. i dont think its going to end up as a load of bands you could see anywhere, the organisers wont let it happen. but, if they wanted people to vote for bands who've never played before they shouldnt have included that drop down box on the voting page, of the entire ATP archive! that'd have made people use their imagination.
maybe i'm being cynical
but modest mouse playing seems a bit fixed to me. i mean, they were already doing the atp concerts the week after...
saying that, they are good live, and i do like them, so i'm not begrudging them playing or anything!
yeah
apples in stereo play v all the fucking time.
