The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

On the 25th birthday of the Brit Awards, the ‘legendary’ institution is launching a search to find the public's all time favourite 'British' single. Expect the whole farrago to bombard your media for a couple of months to come, so here’s a bit of pre-warning…

Quite simply, the 25 songs from which you will be prodded to vote are:

‘Heroes’ - David Bowie
‘We Are The Champions’ - Queen
‘Wuthering Heights’ - Kate Bush
‘Night Fever’ - Bee Gees
‘London Calling’ - Clash
‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ - Joy Division
‘That's Entertainment’ - The Jam
‘I Don't Want To Talk About It’ - Rod Stewart
‘Look of Love’ - ABC
‘Golden Brown’ - The Stranglers
‘True’ - Spandau Ballet
‘Careless Whisper’ - George Michael
‘Holding Back The Years’ - Simply Red
‘Sledgehammer’ - Peter Gabriel
‘Sacrifice’ - Elton John
‘Unfinished Sympathy’ - Massive Attack
‘Why’ - Annie Lennox
‘Fields of Gold’ - Sting
‘Kiss From A Rose’ - Seal
‘Wonderwall’ - Oasis
‘Angels’ - Robbie Williams
‘Yellow’ - Coldplay
‘Babylon’ - David Gray
‘Leave Right Now’ - Will Young
‘Dry Your Eyes’ - The Streets

Does this inspire you? We know there’s going to be the Eltons and Stings of this world on there, but surely redemption via The Jam, Joy Division and Kate Bush? Or do you hate it all?

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Obviously 'Kiss From a Rose' is the greatest single of the last 25 years.

Oh Maaaaaan...

Polls Will Tear Us Apart.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Who shortlists this fucking tripe? And don't tell me "you, the British public", because I wouldn't have voted for ANY of the above.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Give it to Bush and be done with it.
Then she can duet with China Drum at the awards.
HOW AMAZING?

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

that Will Young could even be suggested makes me vomit blood out my eyes

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

*Holds head in hands*
That's an even more depressing thought than that list. Oh dear god.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

fields of fucking gold....how can they?!
has anyone else been scarred for life buy Sting's music?

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

I actually quite like 'Englishman In New York'...but most of his solo stuff has been complete pan plopper, including 'Fields of Gold'. I think my hatred is more to do with him being a smug git, though. Just because he can sustain an erection for three weeks doesn't mean he can write a decent song, yet he seems to think he's the bestest thing ever.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years

Ha! I was just looking through the list feeling a bit sad but picked out Fields of Gold as one of 3 or 4 I might vote for!

*Prepares for insults to fly my way*

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

The sad thing is that loads of these artists have done better songs than the ones up for voting. I'd guess some of us secretly like the odd Elton John song but I bet it's not Sacrifice. Or am I the only one who thinks Crocodile Rock is a good tune?

Same with Queen - I really like Don't Stop Me Now and The Show Must Go On.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years

Well, it still pisses all over 'Yellow' and Will 'Chin' Young's (lack of) effort.
Has anyone else realised that ABC's 'The Look Of Love' is one of the funniest songs ever? I don't think they meant it to be, either. Download it, if you can. Last one to laugh out loud is probably sat at home in a gold lamé suit.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

I think it's pointless to get riled up about the list. After all, no one ever expected anything from the Brit Awards anyways. I am pissed to see that 'Paranoid Android' and S Club's 'tragedy' missed out though.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

Yeah I agree.

Bush should win.

And why Will Young? At least have someone like All Saints who had a couple of OK pop songs.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

i think you're onto a winner.

my vote goes to China Drum.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years

"Bush should win."
you dont hear that round these parts much

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

I despise this sort of thing anyway, but the only thing that could make me despise it even more was if 'Angels' ended up winning.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Is that cos you love the dance moves?

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Oh lord. You're all going to hell in a handcart. Even moreso than this board usually is. Next peple will be saying that Futureheads joke cover is better than Kate's original too...

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years

Just feel the class of that production!
"Wooaahh-wooaah-wooaah-WOAH!"

Better than that made-for-Ken-Bruce plodalong of "Dry Your Eyes" at any rate (and much of the rest of that list)

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Actually...considering this is meant to be selected by the british public, then by its inclusions it is not as bad as I would have feared....sure we would expect loads of unmitigated rubbish, but I am suprised to see that I like quite a few of these...Jam, Bowie, Stranglers, Bush, Massive Attack, Clash, Joy Division....I even quite like ABC's cheesyness..

.I cannot fault the picking of spandau ballets True and George Michael's Careless whisper (although I don't like them) then again its not all about me.......so I am also suprised that you lot have criticised the list so much....I mean what did you expect for gods sake....It is surely better than you imagined that it would be, isn't it?

Although I am baffled by the non inclusion of Radiohead - Paranoid Android , Pulp -Common People and anything by Blur.......It would have been too much to expect a Smiths track but I think that a Cure track would not be asking too much. Maybe they just have so many great ones that the fans diluted their votes amongst many tracks by these artists.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

If I were a betting man, my money would be on 'angels'.

Surprising Omissions:
Supergrass
CarterUSM
The Stone Roses
Pulp
Radiohead

Nice to see Blur, Pink Floyd, The Manics, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, and The Smiths didn't make it though!

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

I also suspect 'Unifinished Sympathy' was included as the token 'urban hit'. they need to keep it real after all.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

I think it's the last 25 winners of best single, is it? I'm not very up on these things.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

Wow. I'm glad someone else hates him. Or did you mean Maxine Carr?

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Fuck this nonsense. I'm going for a fry-up. Bye.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

i. would. have. KILLED to hear that.

there's still time!!! where are the former members?! for the sake of humanity, make this happen!

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

the whole notion of there having been 25 "best british songs of the last 25 years" is fucking ridiculous to even begin with. isn't a massive part of the reason that we're all here on this site, that in varying degrees, lots of us obsess about music? about bands? about SONGS? songs that could be adored by everyone, or, existing outside the kind of commercial framework that loves these sorts of lists, known only by 100 people?

to flatten that out and take a count-em-up average kills that - that we're supposed to accept that because 75.6% of the population said that ____ is the best song ever written on these shores, and not fight and argue for the song that makes each and every one of us cry and dance and shout, goes against everything i love about music and music fans. [of course we DO argue about it, as demonstrated, but the list remains. fucking shortlists.]

aagh. i know i'm not saying anything new here. that list just angers me. [some of] those songs have their place, but that list as a whole is worthless. i'm sure someone will make some money out of it though.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

He's a bit smug, but there are far worse guys out there that could be hosting. Theakston anyone?

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

Horrible, horrible list. I like Coldplay a lot but 'Yellow' makes me heave. From that list I'd pick...The Jam. Or The Clash. Closely followed by Joy Division.

Kate Bush, Will Young, Robbie Williams and Rod Stewart are all more than a little questionable.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Its the songs the general public would have chosen so don't expect it to be good.

And the Danny Whiten original "I don't want to talk about it" is excellent.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

well, i'm not going to now. but only because i think saying the words "i like Hounds of Love better when the Futureheads do it" it will cause your head to explode..

:)

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years

Poison Arrow is much better than look of love

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

There are very few in there I'd actually put in the shortlist if, as is very dubious anyway, there should actually be one... the only ones there I can see that should be in there are Massive Attack (yes, I DO like that song a lot), Joy Division, The Clash and possibly Bowie, though I can think of better songs. I'm disgusted there's no Cure, Smiths, Radiohead or Blur though, yeah.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Sledgehammer? Simply Red? Jeesus. Most of these songs are boring but when you look at Simply Red up there they all suddenly look half decent. Curse them and their evil list. I don't think i've even heard that Elton John song and the Rod Stewart choice is shite. Maggie May is the only goodun he's ever done. Although I do enjoy the Chinese-style of 'do you think i'm sexy' (or whatever that turd is called) on that advert.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

the clash of course

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

clash - london calling by a mile although the above list isnt brilliant and i dont really see the point in doing the whole thing anyway

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

did a partially deaf person compile this list??? some of its okay, but theres a fair load of tripe in there.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

i reckon "the british public" is actually a fat-cat music boffin who earns his/her living from these polls.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

I'm betting that the winner of this vote will get a nice little sticker added to their greatest hits cd.

'Featuring the best British single EVER!' It'll boost sales, fer sure.

There's no Cure in there either, so fuck em.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

it doesn't matter what tune you like. Robbie 'fuckin' Williams will win this just like he wins every other shitty poll.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

It's just about what I expected really. I'd like to see Joy Division win. Surprisingly they've actually gone with the only Robbie Williams song worthy of any sort of attention at all, so I wouldn't mind that much if it won. Otherwise The Clash or Massive Attack I suppose.

They do seem to have chosen the wrong song for a number of artists. For example, Queen should have been Don't Stop Me Now (the ULTIMATE clubbing song), The Streets should have been Weak Become Heroes, Oasis should have been Don't Look Back In Anger...

Also I have to say that I haven't heard 12 out of those 25!

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years

Yeah, "Everything Zen" blew me away the first time I heard it. The freshness, the originality, the PASSION.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

No Madness? No Roxy Music?
What about Pink Floyd's brick in the wall?
'Kayleigh' by marillion ...?
'Tainted love'?
'Don't you want me baby?'?
'West end girls?'
'Invisible sun' by the police should have been a contender
I'd also have expected 'in the air tonight' by Phil Collins

Rod Stewart must have a bloody good manager is all I know

Personally I'd say the best british song of the last 25 years is Ghosts by Japan

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

"Queen should have been Don't Stop Me Now"

Especially since We Are The Champions is more than 25 years old (1977)...

For that matter, aren't Heroes (1977), Wuthering Heights (1978) and Night Fever (1978) similarly not from the last 25 years?

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

It's a list of alltime favourite British songs.

So you can vote for stuff like Don Estelle and Windsor Davis doing Whispering Grass, or Mr Blobby.

Whoever wins, we can rest assured that about 99% of the people on this site will tear out their eyes and shake a fist at the heavens, muttering 'damn you god'. Apart from the 'difficult' 1%. Unless it's somebody like Joy Division or The Clash who win, but, I can't really see the British public voting en masse for these over 'proper' celebrities.

The version of Wuthering Heights on her Greatest Hits isn't a patch on the original on The Kick Inside.

I thought Gen's comment was very cliched ;-)

I'm voting for Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Didn't Liberty X cover a Radiohead song on that Re:Covered program the BBC did for a while?

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

Now that's a good point haha

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

All lists are shit and pointless.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

It was in Seattle.
Which isn't in Britain.
And hence not a British single.

Where, though, were Half Man Half Biscuit?

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

I can't believe no one has mentioned the fact that simply red have been nominated! I can understand stuff like Careless Whisper and Angels, but Simply fucking Red?! If I were to dignify this with a vote it would go to Love will Tear us Apart, followed by The Jam, The Clash and Oasis.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy

no no no, it's fields of gold. clearly.

Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

only for the last 25 years though, so as to exclude Yesterday. which everyone knows would win.
