2007 was a great, great year for album releases – while DiS ran a top 50 of the year, topped by LCD Soundsystem’s Sound Of Silver (find the full 50 here) – we could have stretched to a clean 100 and still have albums of an amazing quality to spare. Bravo, musicians, bravo.
Yet midway into 2008 – as good as – we’re scratching our skulls in bewilderment: is this year already producing a bounty more sumptuous than the last? Next week DiS will refresh reader memories by highlighting some of the year’s best albums, and songs, so far. And there’s plenty to pick from, which is why this week’s DiScussion is our way of asking you to tell us your favourites of the year.
Perhaps you’ve been spun round, right round, by the luscious dance textures of Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours and M83’s_ Saturdays = Youth? Or maybe you’ve tuned into 2562’s dubstep-techno hybrid LP _Aerial, or Flying Lotus’ Dilla-goes-Burial offering Los Angeles (said artist pictured)? Have Crystal Castles ensnared your attention with their glitchy self-titled, or are your dance-party boxes fully ticked by El Guincho’s tropical melodies on Alegranza?
Perhaps indie of a more inventive variety has stolen your breath? Foals made great on their promise with Antidotes, and Youthmovies’ Good Nature is a technicolour progressive cacophony of realised ambitions. Panic At The Disco’s returning Pretty. Odd. was just that for hardcore fans of their earlier, less-retro work, and LA’s No Age produced a swirling, dizzying muddle of brain-tingling tracks on Nouns. Then there’s board favourites Johnny Foreigner, whose ADHD-soaked debut Waited Up ‘Til It Was Light is a riotous blast of a listen.
Portishead’s comeback LP Third is, perhaps, their best ever. Domino-signed outfit Wild Beasts have made the most uniquely appealing record of the year, for sure, in Limbo, Panto. And then there’s Torche’s Meanderthal for the pop-loving metalhead in you, Cadence Weapon’s phenomenal Afterparty Babies for the hip-hop fan demanding more, and Why?’s sublimely category-defying Alopecia… perhaps this scribe’s album of the year already. Perhaps.
And so many more, already, which is why we need you to remind us of 2008’s best releases so far. G’wan then…
DiScuss: What are your top… say, five… albums of the year so far? What albums do you think _we_ will pick as being among the year’s most-essential to date, and what future releases are you excited about? What’s forthcoming? Let’s see… Beck, Deerhunter, Wolf Parade, Tricky, Roots Manuva, Conor Oberst, Stereolab. Things are looking pretty sweet.

Excellent album. Nick Cave's one is also pretty good. Liked the breeders as well.
Don't think it has been a particularly good year for albums. Most of the debuts that I was looking forward to have been a bit meh.
there's been some great
stuff, but so far nothing has come close to a few of last years...boxer, hissing fauna...
(for me at least)
obviously.
but then i have bought very
little recently due to being poor, so i've probably missed out on a fair bit
moi?
Cut Copy - Errors - Crystal Castles - M83 - Hot Chip
I'm not sure when my musical taste became so blinkered, but 5 albums I love right there. Cut Copy would make it into my top 5 albums of my life I think. Yes.
Panic At The Disco, Wild Beasts and Elbow
are the 3 that stand out in my opinion.
Destroyer-Trouble in Dreams
It seems to have been totally overlooked, but it's probably the album i've listened to most this year.

Foals, MGMT, Crystal Castles, Sun Kil Moon, Bon Iver, Frightened Rabbit and Atlas Sound have all been pretty good, and the leaks of the Wolf Parade, Deerhunter and Venetian Snares albums sound good as well. Still wouldn't mind if someone could explain what's so exciting about the Cut Copy and No Age albums though - they're alright, but they're no masterpieces by any measure...
For me it's No Age and Frightened Rabbit
but I'm always way behind on things, I'll probably have a better answer to this thread in 2011!

the magnetic fields
is the only 2008 album i've bought that i've left off. still not keen on it at all.
10. Move D & Benjamin Brunn - Songs From The Beehive
It is excellent. Isn't it great when you are listening to an obscure album by obscure artists, and you happen to read about them on DiS, at the same time? :D
Man Man
'Rabbit Habits'
my two joint
favourites, (too many options for 3rd choice)
Wild Beasts
Youthmovies
MGMT
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Mystery Jets
Black Keys
Portishead
and if we're cheating, In Rainbows (hard copy released 31st Dec I believe - what?! it counts....)
haha yeah I love that
I read about it on RA and you sputing about it on the minimal thread and have been spinning it ever since. It keeps growng on me too.
Why?, Mystery Jets and Bon Iver
should all be in the top 10 of your end of year list i think.
Maybe obvious choices, sure but they are fantastic records.
ones i'll be listening to next year
no particular order:
alas i cannot swim - laura marling
falling off lavender bridge - lightspeed champ

And a few others that I can't remember, I'm sure.
You're all idiots

No Age - Nouns(I didn't really get it at first but three listens later and I was hooked)
Youthmovies - Goodnature
Idiot Pilot - Wolves
Boris - Smile
The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath
2007 great?
I thought 2007 was the worst year for new records in a long time. Try listening to Sound Of Silver again - there are only three good songs on it. Battles is tech-metal nonsense of the highest order.
This thread seems to have degenerated into people listing all the albums they've downloaded illegally because Pitchfork told them to.
Mine so far, all bought and paid for:
errors
magnetic fields - distortion
times new viking - rip it off
vampire weekend
the accidental
british sea power

Broken Records best EP
and 'taking the farm' by War on drugs my favourite song so far...
it's been a pretty shit year so far

But the only album i've actually fell in love is Titus Andronicus - The airing of grievances. They only made a 1000 copies of it, and it's still on sale!'Tis a travestsy.

Music for thinking adults of the year so far
Bottomless Pit-Hammer of the Gods on comedy minus one-This would have been Silkworm's 10th album but sadly their drummer was killed in a freakish motorway suicide.Seam's Chris Manfrin now drums where once Michael Dahlquist did.
The LP deals with this great loss and the delusion, anger and deep sadness that follow the death of a loved one.
Take the best of Joy Division, Shellac, Karate and Pavement and pass through the brains of 2 intellectual
songwriters and you get this masterpeice.
The Glorytellers-The Glorytellers-on Southern-X Karate star pulls
of a mexican folkish masterpiece with incredible guitar work and the softest voice.
Lazarus Clamp-Death To Techicians/...who does it you-Double Album-on Bearos-One of the only good bands in England play loud hard and pretty and use actual songs built around the concept of containing a meaning!
Thalia Zedek-Liars and Prayers on Thrill Jockey. Gravel voiced gloomy genius from Come-the blues slocore precursers to Nirvana's grunge revolution blasts out an instant classic.
Can I review these if noone else has noticed them?
I guess my shortlist would be
1 Portishead
2 Nich Cave & The Bad Seeds
3 Mystery Jets
4 M83
5 maybe Coldplay ?

I pleased with this
I keep coming back to this album.
I was thinking along the lines of No Age for my favourite album so far this year but I could not get way from the Titus Andronicus album.
When I first heard The Hold Steady described, Springsteen meets punk, they never lived up to the sounds I imagined. However Titus Andronicus sound exactly like what I had imagined.
Do you know where the album can be purchased? Im still listening to a "preview" copy
nahh
nothing is great yet. let us wait a bit.
My top 5:
1. Bon Iver

5-Blood Red Shoes 'Box Of Secrets'
Pivot get my top vote for all round brilliance this year!
This year has been pretty bleak i reckon.... too much hype - not enough substance... people seeming to go with the flow more than normal... main personal criteria = thinking, feeling, dancing. Preferably all at the same time!
