Black and white movies on a Sunday

Rose-Kitten [Edit] [Delete] 19 replies 17:08, 9 July '06

One of my favourite wastes of time... The acting, the camera angles, the scripts, the editing, the fake sets... such a part of an obviously by-gone era and yet, still so entertaining to watch.

At the moment, am watching 'Destiny Rides Again' with Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich...

Do you watch B&W films all that often? I watched 'NOTORIOUS' (Hitchcock) with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman the other day...

What was the last B&W film you watched?

  • Last one was

    Streetcar Named Desire.

It's also the last film I watched full stop.

This was about six months ago. Oh well.

      • Mildly off subject

but watching Brick really made me want to watch some old detective films/film noir. Where should I start?

Brick also made me think of the Diamond brothers books by Anthony Horowitz. The Falcon's Malteser was amazing when I was 10.

        • try

          the maltese falcon
          the third man
          key largo
          pickup on south street
          double indemnity
          the big sleep
          he walked by night
          the asphalt jungle
          touch of evil
          laura
          cape fear (original)
          white heat
          gilda
          this gun for hire
          DOA
          the killing

          and for neo-noir:
          chinatown
          body heat
          the long goodbye
          bullitt

should be enough to get you started.

    • bed and sed

I saw a great great one the other day about some little wheedly woman whose mum marries her to a rich bastard who treats her really badly. Then she meets a stereotype of a gypsy who tells her fortune informing her that she will fall in love with a true man/ I loved the way instead of saying 'a' as in 'bad', 'sad', people in those types of movies say 'bed' and 'sed'

    • "Do you watch B&W films all that often?" I watch good films. Monochrome or otherwise is irrelevant.
