This has the potential to be a GREAT, GREAT game...
It won't be, but there's always the potential...
England 2-Portugal 1 me thinks...
Against Sweden he was great. Carrick against Ecuador wasn't too clever...
So Hargreaves for me.
though in his performances thus far, Hargreaves has impressed me...
This game's set up for Rooney...
His improvement from game to game has been huge, I'm anticipating a huge display from him, he's going to need to really, playing up top on his own, he's going to have his work cut out
He's been faultless so far. Although either would do.
i dont think i can handle the disappointment of losing yet so 3-1 england
Surprisingly. If we play to 3/4 of our ability, we can beat them. If we play to our full potential we can kill them. Rose tinted glasses maybe, but i'm confident in the team...
He should play 4-4-2, with Joe Cole and Rooney up front and with Downing on the left. :)
No way man, 4-4-2 with Crouch as the target man and Rooney dropping back slightly and savaging the defensive line, and throwing balls in or setting up for Gerrard & Lampard. And Cole and Cole overlapping is one of the best moves we've had. I think he should take Neville off at half time, put in Lennon and let Beckham operate as a winger if we're behind.
I just want Downing to play. Joe Cole has been literally fantastic so far, i'm so glad Neville is back though, Hargreaves and Carragher just aren't good enough down that flank, they were putting way too much pressure on Beckham to get back. With Neville in, Beckham can get forward more and deliver more superb crosses. I like Beckham.

I'm getting too excited.
Is it wrong to get adrenaline from reading about Beckham crosses on a message board?
In fact, I encourage it...
I haven't been so excited about a football match since Euro 2004
courtesy of a phone call from work saying "don't come in until after the football"
Let's just hope there's no extra time, eh?
wish I worked where you worked.
2-1. Come on. Please.
that's touchingly nice. enjoy it.
had better score today. In fact I think he will.
I DON'T care what score
Need to keep myself busy for 2hours 10minutes...
Goodbye, Lenin! during a lot of the build-up programme. It's very weird.
What a great film that is.
It's about to start!
That Beckham microphone thing was hilarious.
his poor reading ability was also reasonably amusing
im already worried after i minute 30 seconds... its going to be a nail biter...
cause I am sure they are reading this at half time in the dressing room. All huddled around the computer with DiS up.
over the fucking bar!
I just wish we would fucking score!
God I'm so angry right now!!!
but im praying for penalties now.
I hope it goes to penalties now so we can fail at them again
hargreaves is playing awesome!
are the boys too tired though?
but I'm knackered.
Maybe i'm being biased but it WASN'T a red card. A booking at most.
CRISTIANO RONALDO IS AN ABSOLUTE CUNT!
He STAMPED ON HIS COCK!
If that isn't a red, I don't know what is.
But yes - Ronaldo is a cunt.
Yeah, you can't really debate the red card
"one thing's for sure Rooney won't be taking a penalty"
what a twerp.
how much more of this I can take...
lennons coming off!
im actually proud of an england world cup performance. whod have thought it... now cmon.. we can win it on pens!
Oh Good God
they're great to watch when you're neutral, but NOT in quarter final games.
I can't take this.
Reverts to ITV4 F1 qualifying.
one who thought that Rooney's sending off was totally unfair? It was blatantly an accident!
Why doesn't Motson shut the fuck up? I hate him!
too much of a wuss.
the sound of music to calm my nerves, then return.
Gerrard misses :-(
Got to level it here.
apparently theyve been training for them. what a joke.
are we winning or losing? it's at thepoint where all emotion seems the same!
How will Renaldo ever dare show his face in England again?
that was very lame.
Verge of tears... not again... :(
england always lose on penalties. ALWAYS.
only a third out.
We played our hearts out. We did absolutely brilliantly and just to hold out against a Portugese team for 120 with 10 men was bloody heroic. Portugal dived and dived and dived and looked for a way through that, despite their calibre, they couldn't find.
It breaks my heart.
Of all the games so far, that was the one we actually, honestly deserved to win. What kind of story has ten men heroically hold out for an hour and then have them defeated on penalties? A shit story, that's what. There really is no God, none at all.
O rly. What position were you playing?
seriously. not now.
a sense of humour.
Eriksons reign, at least that's one positive. Possibly the worst tactition England have ever had. Some of the decisions he made during this competition were woeful.
What pleased me most about the performance was that despite the pressure they were under, they never really looked like they were playing for penalties. Those twattish commentators are complete arseholes. I'm so fucking gutted now, i can't think straight!
Unfortunately a combination of shit management from Sven and merciless cheating from the Portuguese undermined that. Ronaldo may be a good footballer but he is also a fucking scumbag.
but rooney DID stamp on that geezers bollocks.
Doesn't change the fact that Ronaldo is a shitbag though ;-)
a) it could have been accidental...
b) if someone had stamped you in the nads like that you wouldnt resume play 2 minutes later. youd still be down.
was superb. I get annoyed that the commentators don't pick up on how great how is, well hyping up other players who've hardly desereved the praise this time round.
accidental to me, can't see what all the fuss was about.
plus yellow card for pushing ronaldo = red
Ronaldo will never set foot in this country again. We played really really well and deserved to win, but if Portugal want to whinge, roll and dive their way to the final then good luck to them. Maybe we're too honest...
but yeah, in general, we play football and don't dive.
Cling on, my friend.
Lampard would miss, i've never been surer about anything in football, he's not looked like scoring in the whole of the competition and he's had so many chances. Poor Frank.
England were abysmal, Portugal were atrocious, yay for the World Cup!
How people thought we had a decent chance of winning is beyond me; Sven's style of management might work over a season but its useless against top class opposition, and if Lampard and Owen are world class players then i might as well put my boots on, they were crap.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I hope Germany win, they've been a breath of fresh air.
And i hope Portugal lose 100090908000 - 0 to France or Brazil, cynical bastards!
There was nothing special about Portugul tonight, nothing. They're basically a crap Argentina.
it's just like, what are the odds of missing that many shoot-outs in a row?
I thought we were outstanding after the sending off and awful before it. That shouldn't take away from the fact that Rooney's foul was disgusting and he's a stupid cunt. People riding their high horses about how we play the game fairly should take another look at that replay. There is no way it was accidental.
It's really gutting though. Hargreaves, Crouch, Terry and Lennon were outstanding and we actually looked like a team after we went down to 10 men. Not saying we would have beaten Brazil but it would have been nice to go one step further this time.
count on Brazilbeating France the way they've played in this tournament. And I still don't see that Rooney's 'foul' was deliberate. He had two of them hacking at him and he was off balance. His reaction to Renaldo however, was rather misjudged.
understand the push on Ronaldo actually, and it wasn't a bad enough push to be a sending off offense. But for me he very deliberately left his foot in on Carvalho and brought it down hard on his cock. By rights he should get the same treatment as Beckham got after his (much less violent) foul against Argentina eight years ago.
i hope portugal crash out in the semi. horrible dishonest team, i've thought so before today.
i'm not bitter.
figo & ronaldo = embarassing to watch.
hargreaves, crouch, ashley cole, ricardo = outstanding.
the referee was like the russian police: harsh but fair.
thing about the match was the level of support. Fantastic!
the stamp was deliberate, he was finding his balance. the push was nothing at all.
the people who got behind the lads and belived we would achieve something.
What really pissed me off was the ammount of people saying "We've been shit, we're not going to win, we're crap blah blah blah." What use is that to anyone? Don't you think that the players had enough pressure on them without their OWN FANS getting on at them and telling them how crap they are? From day one I've been saying we can do this, this is our year. I was clearly wrong, but I think that it was a much better attitude to have than that of the nay sayers. When I speak to people at college and they tell me that I'm talking shit, that we're crap, all i can say is, just have a little bit of faith. What harm will it do?
I know that I've been a good supporter this year, just like millions of the rest of us. Its the wankers who won't get behind their own team because they think that they look cool, that they know more about football or who just don't want to belive because it will hurt more if we do lose that have let us down, just as much as the players in my opinion.
was accidental. Peope should be asking why it didn't hurt him more? Does he have no testicles?
we bottled it again, shit shit shit, were no better than spain when it comes to the big games we just cant win
hate losing like that...
We were in the ascendent when Rooney was ridiculously sent off.
What a bad referee...
we cant blame the ref for not winning, if ronaldo had done that to one of our players, we all be saying it was the correct decision
I would only want a red card if it was truly deserved.
I would also suggest he was at fault for the carragher penalty. If the ball wasn't on the spot properly shouldn't he have checked that before the penalty was taken?
no one even contemplates for a second whether the decision is a correct one if its in favour of their team.
I've already said all of this, but I thought the referee was fine, Rooney deserved to be sent off, and we played much better after he was dismissed!
for a tackle that looked fairly accidental to me?
Or the least of pushes? the like of which happens hundreds of times in a game?
a yellow card would have been sufficient.
I haven't read the rest of the thread, and I've just got in from watching the game, Hargreaves was a man mountain today, Lennon was incredible when he came on, and Gerrard and Lampard were embarassments
like I said, I thought it was a deliberate and quite horrible stamp. It's amazing that so many people seem to see it as accidental!
somewhere, with him always flailing around and stuff.
If he did do it intentionally, well that's what you get for encouraging charvers to play football..
was the deliberate action of a lout who is a liability to yous because he can't control his temper. If he lived next door to you you'd want him shot. If the next manager can get Rooney to play football rather than assault people you'll have a more realistic chance of progressing further. I predicted you'd get to the quarters then go out and some would believe controversially, regardless of the facts. I have rewarded myself with my first caffeine stacked pot of coffee in six years for being so astute. You should be pleased that you got to the quarter finals and only one player really let yous down. Now breathe out.....
really doesn't have that bad of a disciplinary record.
He has calmed a lot...
I don't think it was deliberate. Only one man KNOWS
The referee was right next to him, as fullerov just said, since the ironic referee applause incident, he's calmed down a lot...
I can't see him and Ronaldo playing together again in a hurry
if he can't live with that he must sleep with the fish
Ronaldo is a smug prick. And he was allegedly a rapist...
should know we deal with nothing but pure, unadulterated fact on these boards, toots.
DEFINITELY is a smup prick though.
and sometimes...I just feel like making some really slanderous comments.
Ricardo Carvalho fucks pigs...
oops Did it again :)
you degenerate fuckhole :-)
Here's to Ronaldo leaving for Madrid...
apparently they are running out of flashy players who won't win them anything...
That's what he is.
Did you see the WINK?
The whole thing was contreived.
made me laugh. Like all rightthinking people I have nothing but jealous contempt for chequebook champions.
ronaldo didn't do fuck all wrong.
i love the way everyone looks for the man utd scapegoat to cover up another shite england performance.
if you want to point the blame, look fat fwank lampard. useless rent boy.
piece of shit though.
Ronaldo headbutt Rooney before the match?
When/How did that come about?
he came from behind, whispered in rooneys ear and like headbutted him (well pushed Rooneys head with his)
whoever was next to Rooney at the time (Lampard?) laughed at first but when he saw Rooney glaring he stopped
it was just playful really.
like he was trying to wind him up. which would explain the wink to the portugal bench when rooney got sent off. ronaldo is scum and the sooner he leaves the premiership the better, although it would be nice to see the reception he gets if he stays
as to whether it was deliberate from Rooney. At first I thought he was just trying to get his balance, but the more I see it he clearly leaves his studs in, and surely if you've done it accidently you will be apologising endlessly. Not Rooney. He deserved to be sent off. i will be interested to see whether Rooney gets the same treatment from fans next season that Beckham got after he saw red against Argentina....
I'm not undecided :)
they were laughing and joking as they walked out the tunnel.
just accept england are shit and lost.
you should know better. Nation of bad energy cunts.
someone form this band NOW !
but gutted...gutted. As Ronaldo stepped up to take that penalty, I knew he'd miss. Fate would have it that England couldn't lose on penalties again, and that such an undeserving bad sportsman wouldn't have the moment of glory.
But he scored, and to cheat is to win it seems. Makes me very sad.
confused...explain. Being quite drunk probably isnt helping.
f*** off did anyone cheat.
who cheated? ronaldo i presume?
no i'm not drunk.
and the wink to his teammate when rooney got sent off.
From an honest, sober, non-England perspective as i'm trying to think with, its bad sportsmamship.
Put it this way, he's no gentleman. And thats what you should aspire to on any sporting field, not that many footballers do.
and the wink meant he got rooney sent off did it?
it's media propoganda... the wink could easily have been in response to someone shouting from the bench "cmon lads this is ours for the taking".
rooney got sent off because he trod on someone's bollocks. end of.
i havent seen any of the media since the game.
Maybe Rooney did deserve to get sent off. I don't know.
My point is, Ronaldo doesn't conduct himself like a gentleman on the field.
Maybe thats an out of date concept, but fuck it, I'm sick of seeing this kind of behaviour in football. And quite rightly it makes me sad.
comment on this messageboard is media propoganda.
no disrespect, but you're hardly in a position to make valued comment "if you don't know if rooney deserved to be sent off".
so how can you know if ronaldo conducts himself like a gentleman on the field.
so im aware that any comment i make about rooney is likely to be a bit biased. But I'm quite clear that I saw Ronaldo and other players go down today, playacting after nothing-challenges, and I stand by the fact that it's unacceptable behaviour.
Do you endorse this kind of approach to a sporting contest?
oh dear, i'm making this sound like it's some kind of 17th century duel! But I would like to see a bit more respect for the game in football - I'm just making my point in a rather over the top way.
your drunkeness, i admire your level-headedness and swearing your arse off to make a point like most demented in-gur-land fans.
england players have down looking for freekicks, etc... every team does. i'm not saying it's gentlemanly or correct, but i'm afraid it's part of the game whether we like it or not. if portugal or whoever use such situations to their advantage, then that's clever play. if you're shit at it, you get booked for diving.
i'm not condoning it, but it's part of the game. and england aren't clever or good enough to play in a world cup semi-final.
*not sweearing your arse off
in two years time this conversation will be repeated, as it was two years ago
im so pissed off right now, i really am.
my god i can't believe that happened. I am upset.
It was close.
I felt we were the better side.
It is sad.
i really cant believe we cant take penalties, very poor
it's another glorious defeat to add to the nostalgia show of 2020.
it's all a mess in my head; it's a mixture of the press over-hyping our players to the point that we were led to believe we had 23 world class players and the fact we underperformed; Sven's management was non-existent and I really can't stand him, and our tactics were muddled.
Same As It Ever Was, Same As It Ever Was (repeat to fade)
I am proud of their performance.
he was fantastic today, and has showed great strength of character. They gave it their best, it just wasnt enough.
It was very good.
Penalties are a lottery.
They did very, very well.
All of them.
I need tomorrow to think about this rationally.
Portugal were taking penalties like they *had* to score them, England were stepping up the mentality that's it's only a lucky dip and they could score or miss. And they were piss poor, all relying on the keeper going the wrong way.
i thought it was a team loss, normally there is someone obvious to blame (the ref, a particular player.) it would have been hargreaves if he missed his penalty but he was the only one who scored.
but i didnt feel like blaming someone.
germany to beat italy in the final?
am i the only person who still doesnt rate hargreaves? yes he makes the occasional average to good tackle, but his ditribution and touch isnt half as good as carrick. hes a bit of a phil neville.
yeh good point. still germany to win the final though.
In extra time, he was going forward more than anyone. And he made some great contributions in tackling and holding the ball.
who played well once again i thought, also seems to give something more in big games
think he has the desire, but just not the skill to make it at international level. its like when they were analysing him at half time ( i know wright is biased but he made a good point about hargreaves not wanting the ball). personally he could have been an easy choice as scape goat, but i dont think there was anyone obvious to blame.
itl be interesting to see who the media blames tomorow.
will take the brunt i imagine, dunno if theyll go for wayne though
I think it's fair that it go to Erikson to be honest. I've never been sure about the system, and I don't think the players were either. The formation changed too often depending on player availability and Sven's 'star loyalty'. The squad selection was iffy (Jenas?? Walcott??) and there were some ugly substitutions at various points. It's fair that he get questioned for that.
Shove that lol up your bottom, please.
no please this time.
everyone is finally back from the pub then.
I got too drunk to give a proper opinion on what happened yesterday. It's annoying. Perhaps for the best.
I honestly couldn't give a fair assessment of any player. Fuck sake.
I think i could give a fair account.
I'm gonna spend the next week avoiding newspapers and stuff to try and forget...
"We have got to face reality that we are a team nowhere near the top seven countries in the world." - not true. nowhere near is just silly. We are totally capable of beating any team in the world. I'm not really sure how you define a top 8 team but to say we are nowhere near is odd. Some of the quarter finalists have been shocking.
"Look at Cristiano Ronaldo, Simao, Pauleta. We don't have a player anything like that. Every other country has one, but we don't." - another very odd thing to say. Pauleta is an extremely average player. To say that Rooney, Gerrard, Cole etc aren't close to being as good as Pauleta is bizzare.
I don't understand.
that scores 25 goals every year in every team he has been...
but I think he's hugely overrated.
So it's still true then.
We still lost the game.
I feel sad.
should be interesting
4 pages in the Sunday Times today entirely devoted to laying in to Eriksson. Thing is, I can't say it's unfair either.
Typical that the game where England go out of the tournament is the only game where they looked like they might be capable of producing something. How one team can lose so many penalty shoot-outs in a row is beyond me
