I think we are gonna get to the semis! Awesome.
reckon we should stick with the 4-5-1? I don't see how we can justify dropping carrick in favour of crouch when we're playing such an attack-minded team.
and play 4-1-3-2. normal back four with cole and carragher bombing forward, carrick in the holding midfielder role and then lampard, gerrard and joe cole as attacking midfielders helping rooney and crouch out.
that's what SHOULD happen. because let's face it, even though beckham aims one or two good set pieces a game to an england head, he has no pace at all. ashley cole is looking like our paciest player at the moment, which is worrying.
get aaron lennon on at 60 minutes gone too.
Carragher bombing forward in place of Beckham is just ridiculous. What do you want him to bomb forward and do? He can't cross. In fact he can't distribute the ball at all. I love him, he's a phenomenal tackler but asking him to do that is ridiculous and pretty unfair. Added to that the fact that Hargreaves had a great game at right back today.
There is no justification for dropping Beckham. In fact after today I'd rather see Lampard dropped anyone, although I see more value in continuity. He was shocking today but I fully expect him to play well in the next game. Look at Cole - incredible against Sweden, apalling against Ecuador.
Although I reckon Rooney could do with a bit of help up front. Maybe with Gerrard advancing even further than he was today or bringing on Downing earlier to let Joe Cole go forward. Crouch should only come on should we look desperate for goals and aren't creating anything.
They had an easy group, they beat Ecuador by borifying them, and now they'll probably get past Portugal because of suspensions.
To think that this bunch of clowns will get through to the semis at the expense of (at least relatively) good teams like Ivory Coast, Czech Republic and Mexico.
qualified for the world cup, so obvioulsy good. By winning the group we earned played the easier team, that's the prize for winning the group. surely.
They're going to wank their way to the semis too, and frankly Portugul's performances haven't been that great either.
claiming that two teams have fluked their way to the world cup semi finals equates to dismissing 8 teams who have qualified for the world cup. Italy beating Ghana wasn't exactly luck.
as the cliche goes 'you can only beat what's put in front of you'.
Fair enough. The best team doesn't always win the world cup.
Now you have to admit that they're a bunch of clowns ;)
We have had four teams put in front of us, and have beaten three of them and drawn against the other. Nowt wrong with that.
If we win the world cup, people will say 'but you had an easy run to get there' I would say to the 'fuck off'
Had an easy run AND played like a bunch of clowns.
and had moments of great link-up play. We just need to gel a bit better. But Wiggle, a big NO to the clowns commment. ;-)
frankly, our place was booked from the start. This is where we're going to have to start looking special.
We have to perform. Not a moment of lack of concentration. I hope we do well, this is the best chance we have had for years.
Ecuador looked like a third rate sunday league pub team and England barely won. They're fecked against Portugal. Remember Euro 2004...
We will beat Portugal I reckon.
now please leave.
are really not all that.
well yeah. As would the Maldives and Bahrain.
But we will play those teams in the next 3 games.
not that long ago.
isn't that the idea of the world cup?
the england fans are either overly-cynical or completely rational about us. We are a decent team who usually underperform. We're a great team of individuals. Its hard not to have high expectations from a team that has Gerrard, Rooney, etc in it.
Oh, and we were thrashed 4-1 by Denmark less than a year ago.
"the MAJORITY OF england fans..."
where this perception of England fans as arrogant comes from, no one I know has a 'smug smile' on their face, most of my friends and people I speak to about football generally expect the worst from England or, as Thom says, are pretty rational
try talking to Argies and Italians if you want to see real finger up arseage
recently have been full of criticism for the England team. I'm not a fan of reporters asking some pissed up fan what they think the score of a match will be, but that's hardly a fair cross section of English fans
and they can't have been more negative about England. The sports section is full of "where Gerrard went wrong", "how we will be picked apart by Equador", "Christ that was poor, God, how do we keep doing this" and "Sven is a bastard, kill him, kill him dead"
you're seriously deluded. We're notoriously pessimistic. Hence Sven leaving becasue of media intrusion. Hence Scolari citing the media as a contributing factor to him turning down the job. The media do everything they can to undermine anything positive.
automatically go down in my estimation. There's no justification for it whatsoever. He's set up two, scored one and been directly responsible for another. What more do you want? He's never had pace, so he's never been a traditional winger in that respect
Because of his name people think they are being clever and controversial by claiming they wouldn't play him. Lampard and Gerrard were both dog shit today. So why not drop one of them? (I wouldn't, by the way)
apart from your assessment of Gerrard who was clearly one of the best players on the pitch. I'm not sure if it's because he's set himself such high standards but it amazes me how oblivious people are to what he does.
is in overdrive, we are going to destroy Potugal. That match took too much out of them. Have good vibes! Semi finals!!!!!!!!!
is something the English lack sometimes.
lets face it, shit as we are, we breezed through, portugal really struggled there, with injuries, red cards and whatnot, I honestly feel we're going to take them apart...HAVE SOME FAITH AND POSTIVE ENERGY
we'll play out a sluggish 2-1 scrapfest.
will do us fine. Who the fuck cares. We're going to the semi finals.
ah, reverse psychology. nice.
but let's face it - he's hardly the player he was. there were a good few years when if he was in the team, whether it be for manchester united or england, he WAS the team. now he seems comparatively anonymous.
the glimpses of aaron lennon we've seen suggest a pacy, skillful player full of darting runs and well-fought-for crosses. obviously he'll never be like beckham at his best, but compare the two now and there's not a lot in it.
that he's supplied most of the goals this tournament just goes to show the lack of creativity in midfield at the moment - lampard and gerrard could be such an incredible pairing if they both peaked at the same time and if they could keep their heads over the ball when taking long shots.
but apart from a few blips in the first half, i thought we played quite well today and throughout the second half we didn't really look like conceding at all.
we will surely peak with our first challenge of the tournament so far coming next saturday.
Gerrard had a poor game today. His and Lampard's passing was, at times, fucking awful. Lampard needs a goal, I think it's coming though
On a positive note, how good was Rooney in the second half? The way he skinned their right back on the touch line was the sex
a chance if we play to our potential. But I'm not optimistic. If we play like we did today and Portugal play like they did in the first half today (the second half doesn't count since it was hardly a football match) we'll get played off the park. Not to mention tactically outclassed by Scolari.
We barely created a chance against fucking Ecuador. They had the best chance of the match. We have this team full of talent but when was the last time we played genuinely well in a match in a competitive match? Probably Croatia in Euro 2004. Let's hope we can do it again on Saturday because we are going to have to.
that's what worries me, the utter lack of chances today
we made quite a few in the second half, just let down by a few misjudged final passes.
they were potentially good moves that weren't turned into chances, and that's the problem.
almost results in a goal constitutes a chance? how about the one where Lampard teed up Rooney just inside the area?
"chances" with "shots". we didn't have enough "shots", but we still created enough "chances".
but my worry is that almost all our shots (and there certainly weren't many) were from outside the area.
you should relax. We'll be fine.
semis are a different matter but we'll cross that bridge WHEN we get there. I still have a good feeling and my esp hasn't failed me for about three years now.
can you imagine
England V France in the semis?
that would be hysterical
this world cup will be remembered only for the refereeing
It would also mean France beating Brazil which would be very interesting.
France beating Ghana
there's been some quality games to be fair. Except the England and France ones.
to somebody who couldn't have cared less about either
Portugal have won last time we played them. I hope it isnt different this time :(
God, will they never stop going on about it! :P
we raise our game in the first half against bigger teams. Then get a goal, attempt to defend the lead and eventually lose it. You never know though, just through probability and luck and stuff this tactic is bound to work eventually. Unfortunate but true.
still say play Beckham at right-back - particularly as they will be missing their best wingers. Mind you Simao is alright
Slightly different kettle of fish, but Greece won Euro 2004 and nobody would've classed them as the best side of the tournament.
