jesus christ. owen's out of the world cup.
When was he in ?
And good move picking Walcotte when you're too scared to play him, Sven.
if crouch gets a yellow we have rooney and theo fucking walcott.
At least it wouldn't matter too much if we lost. If we go in to the next round without a striker (bar Rooney who isn't an out-and-out goalscorer anyway) we really are fucked.
should've brought walcott on.
silly, silly sven. he actually has no intention of playing him at all, does he?
maybe there's a reason
* abandon reply *
The worst situation that England could face is opposition against Germany in the next round.
If Walcott was gonna play any part in the World Cup, it would've been this game. Alas, if Crouch gets the yellow, Sven will have no choice.
Which leads me to ask....why pick Theo in the first place, Sven?!?
considering your last post!
the last one!
but I had abandoned reply !
Was just surprised by John changing lines so much...
I think you both have issues! ;)
1 Paul Robinson 2 Gary Neville 3 Ashley Cole
4 Steven Gerrard 5 Rio Ferdinand 6 John Terry
7 David Beckham 8 Frank Lampard 9 Wayne Rooney
10 Michael Owen 11 Joe Cole 12 Sol Campbell
13 David James 14 Wayne Bridge 15 Jamie Carragher
16 Owen Hargreaves 17 Jermaine Jenas 18 Michael Carrick
19 Aaron Lennon 20 Stewart Downing 21 Peter Crouch
22 Scott Carson 23 Theo Walcott
they should've dropped hargreaves or downing and taken another striker.
I can think of many reasons why.
He's a good player but there's loads of central midfieldrers in the side. He's unlikely to start and you wouldn't bring him on to change a game so why have him in the squad?
On the upside I personally think England are playing pretty well.
Now THAT'S a goal.
I chose the worst possible time to go to the toilet.
'Grunge' was one teenage incontinence episode away from being called 'piss rock'.
quite a decent game of football.
as the game goes along, would like to see a bit more of beckham on the right though, but cole and cole down the other side have been good, everytime joe gets the ball ashley cole is always on the overlap which lets joe cut inside, i suppose if neville was playing right back then wed see a lot more action down the right
walcott should be brought on and take off crouch or rooney, i think lampards gonna score in 2nd half aswell
with the amount of shots he's had in the game so far.
He deserves to score.
But it would be perfect if Rooney scored.
have been a rock in defence.
England need to sort themselves out here. They are not looking good right now.
Walcott now officially a complete waste of a squad place.
to be able to play well for half a game at a time.
First half v Paraguay
Second half v Trinidad
First Half v Sweden
On this form, we might be lucky to get through the next round.
like 8 of the french players then...
Gotta love ITV commnetary.
Thank fuck for that!
This is so funny.
Sweden equalizer !
I love it when people think its all over but its not.
I'm so dumb
Well, we topped the group and didn't get beaten. That's what really matters.
Much as I wanted England to win I couldn't help laughing at Sweden's second goal!
we seem to switch off for a half hour period in every game.
otherwise, this has been a better performance overall than the other two matches.
bring on ecuador!
hargreaves endeared himself to me too. he committed a few too many fouls, but had a few nice touches too.
at englands defending. I can't stop laughing. Hargreaves should stay in the side. Keep the 4-5-1 against Ecuador.
great strike from J.Cole, but in terms of quality that game was piss poor. Anyone for LOLong ball?
Both teams have players that can run.
That changes me from France...
Shocking defensively in the second half, but it was actually a good game to watch, which can't be said by most England performances. We can beat Equador.
i'm more worried about newcastle and who we're going to play upfront next season!
that was about what was expected
everybody's happy right?
and WHY isn't Gerrard captain????????
(I've had 8 pina coladas and 2 glasses of champagne - go me)
time to go out dancing
c ya l8r
England were pretty awful, they didn't play great in the first half and were shocking in the second. So many deep seated problems, I can't be bothered :(
I've seen him at Bayern and he plays very well and fits into their system very well, and while he played okay tonight I don't think he is suited to the England team, why the smeg Carrick isn't played there I'll never know. Look at Alonso for Spain, you don't need a great defensive player there, just someone who retains possession and has a good range of passing.
England were okay in the first half, but hardly looked convincing, let alone a team that were capable of getting beyond the quarter finals
england were decent, better than the first 2 matches. Defending is woeful though. Hargreaves did a great job I thought, but Carragher and Cole looked very dodgy.
Keep the 4-5-1...thats my outsider opinion
but (assuming Owen's out) I'm not sure if it should be Gerrard in attacking midfield with Rooney and Crouch upfront or Lampard and Gerrard in attacking midfield with Rooney up front on his own (replaced by Crouch once he gets knackered).
Mind you, insane as it sounds, if Rooney isn't fully fit it might be worth starting with him on the bench and using him for the last 30 minutes once the opponent's defence starts to tire.
Hargreaves actually looked alright
apparently able to score goals
Cole really excellent
Rooney's tantrum quite funny
Robinson bit shit
severely lost bottle
no longer actually have an attack
it simply boils down to England lacking the ability to keep possession and tiring teams out, then waiting for further chances. It's why England will not win a major competition for quite a few years yet
in the 2nd half was that there was no outlet and therefore we stayed a bit too deep. We were pretty good though throughout i thought but have to work on set pieces
until the set pieces where it was a travesty. Still thought we havent hit our straps yet and have won the group. Im very happy and if you're not you should fuck off and stop being so fucking greedy
although Beckhm really needs to pull his socks up. Need more from him than 50/50 free kicks and the odd long ball. Edmun completely cancelled him out of this game. What was the point of picking Walcott Sven if you're too scared to play him?? I await your answer....
and there is no reason why we can't retain possession as well as many other teams in the World Cup, the players are technically good enough but I do feel it is down to training methods and how they are told to play by the coaching staff, and something that goes through to grass roots football in England where keeping the ball isn't encouraged
It's just not soemthing English players are used to doing. If this was 6 months before the tournament and we had a chance to iron out the problems then I agree it's more than possible. But asking them to not only change formation but the style of play half way through a tournament is unrealistic and will only lead to mistakes. Hargreaves is an insurance policy against the short commings of our game. what you gain is players playing their natural game and a fast tempo to catch teams on the counter rather than having to work at crafting out chances through long passing moves. I think the personnel England have would really suit 3 at the back at 5 in midfield but sadly we haven't tried it before and so we can't switch to it now. It would jsut be a mess.
England didn't seem to come out for the second half, especially Beckham and Lampard. Thought Hargreaves did quite well in the first half, but then the whole team looked quite good in the first half
VERY disappointed by Lampards performance today?
He's looked distinctly cack infront of goal so far. Hargreaves was good and I would play him instead of Carrick. As said we dont hold onto the ball well enough and Carrick isn't going to harry the opponent like Hargreaves. If yOur defence could play 3 at the back it would be the way to go but as it cant I cant decide between 4-4-2 with gerrard and hargreaves or one up front and leave lampard in. We don't have enough width to play 4-5-1 well and we can't drop Beckham for lennon because we rely on his free kicks and corners so much for goals even if he doesnt do anything else in a game those are needed.
that game was shit
Jermain Defoe must be well pissed off
It's the first England game this tournament that wasn't tedious.
But from an English point of view, it's worrying.
Not because of the performance...
Glimpses of full potential. I think the impetus and morale of the team is shockingly dependant on Rooney's presence though.
without him on the pitch.
In fact, he was not really that pivotal though.
Jenas over Defoe looks like a bad decision now...
Unless Walcott can do something ace.
when he was no longer available as an outlet.
wanna fight? :)
I feel worried now.
In the second half he was knackered and I actually think we improved as an attacking threat once Gerrard replaced him.
gave him the sodding ball, he kept taking up decent positions in the 'hole' but he rarely received it to feet there, which is surely where he is most dangerous.
Jenas in an England squad is always a bad decision
because he's not going to get the chance to. It really is phenomenally weird that Sven has taken him but clearly is not going to play him under any circumstances.
Personally I don't think Owen getting injured is such a bad thing for the side. It forced Sven to go 4-5-1 and we actually looked quite dangerous for a while - given our midfield strength this has always seemed like the sensible formation anyway. Besides, Owen was unfit and playing craply. If we can sort out that weakness in defence then good things should follow.
Crouch is more of a goalscorer than Owen at the moment. Uncomfortable but true. If Owen is the difference between the quarter-finals and victory, how come he barely saw the ball, let alone scored, in our two opening games?
learnt how to play against Owen now, just defend deep and he'll hardly get a look in
but like I said, "at the moment". Granted, Owen has been injured recently but he's been off the boil for a long time. I don't think it's sensible to pick him solely because he's proved himself in the past.
I don't think Brazil should have picked Ronaldo either, so there you are ;-)
That's one good thing about this side is that goals can come from a number of players; Gerrard, Crouch, Rooney, Lampard, Joe Cole, Beckham, Terry. England don't rely on just one goalscorer
for golden boot anyone?
chuffing hopes so
and he's captain as well.
being the holding midfielder. I see no reason why gerrard couldnt be employed as a forward.
fave commentary moment
"Joe Cole offers him some width"
more than anything else is the ITV commentary suggested that England are now a sure thing to get through to the quarter finals. I really doubt Ecuador are shaking in their boots after England's performances.
probably 1-0 or something though. We just have to hope that Holland don't manage to beat Argentina tonight.
i'm positive that picking theo walcott was a publicity stunt designed to aid arsenal, set in action by david dein.
his power at the fa was ridiculous, and when coupled with the fact that he's a major part of arsenal football club, it's obvious he's going to try and make things happen in his best interests.
if walcott comes on in the next round and scores a last-minute winner then his, and arsenal's names are going to be over the back pages of every newspaper in the world - pretty good free publicity for the arsenal brand.
last night highlighted even further that defoe should have been taken to germany.
that dein barred england from approaching wenger for the national coach's position, so why not this?
re harewood/ashton - i think they're good players but lacking on international experience to be thrust straight into a world cup. i think harewood may be a fixture in the squad by euro 2008.
Surely you mean Ashton?
that ashton won't be nearly as prolific next season...
someone said Larsson didn't touch it, and therefore the goal is invalid...
just got his studs on it
I thought it was Mellberg, but there is no doubt that there was a touch on the ball after the throw-in
A fair enough point
It really does look like everyone missed it.
Bad angle though
seeing a far better angle of it last night that seemed to show Larsson getting the faintest of touches
moving from the throw-in.
It is quite hard...
