SORRY if this is old ground... I have looked back but cannae find...
I wanna get a laptop very soon for music making purposes, using Ableton software, as well as general home usage.
Any recommendations on what I should purchase? Obviously need a laptop with a bit of kick...
Thanks
MsRx
Dell
did you not know she is only 12?
Martbowski
I can assure you it's for both bedroom and studio use.
Relax.
i have a mid range macbook pro ordered
with extra memory to do exactly the same thing. have been told this will do fine
i hope!
I fear macs
I think I'll go and have a play with one at some point.
Will be getting a new computer sometime and I hear good things about macs but I'm not sure whether to switch away from PCs
dunno

read why dolphon musi think you should buy one of these and make up your mind whether you like their reasoning.
i heart them
using one right now - they are just a bit more user friendly i find. and prettier
My new favourite poster^^
that profile should be open for anyone to use whenever the need arises
Exactly!
There is a reason
that nearly every live band that uses a laptop uses a Mac. (including each artist at volcano! last night)
They are reliable, great performers and universally accepted within the music industry to being the platform on which music is made and mixed.
Why do you think it took 5 years for a PC version of Logic or Pro Tools to surface?
Once again yes, I am an Apple zealot, but Macs are the only way to go for music.
I've visions of getting Windows blue screen errors half way through your headline slot at the Brixton Academy and it aint pretty.
i have a headline slot at Brixton?!
Wow!
when am i playing?
He was of course, referring to me
maybe we can double bill or sumthan..? Am flexible.
i agree
even though i use windows. if i was ever to use a laptop live, i'd buy a mac. they never crash. a mid priced one should be fine to run ableton, as long as you don't overload it with other crap.
i've punked up the harddrive as well
so i should be ok - its basically the same as a top of the range macbook, but not black. it still works out cheaper. yeah!
For music and movies and stuff
Mac is king.
For everything else, use Windows.
how so?
how is word processing or browsing the internet better on a platform that houses over 1,000 new discovered virii every day?
I've never had a virus. Fact.
My argument is, why bother spending more money on an Apple, if you could spend less on a PC that doesn't crash(in my experience) doing day to day things.
Indeed
You only need to spend extra on a Mac for that if you're a bit of a technodud.
Windows Blue screens are so
19 fucking 98.
Since the advent of Win2000pro and WinXP, blue screens are a rare occurance.
My work PC is still running Win2000 and i don't think it has crashed once in the last 3 months.
Macs are indeed fucking great. But so are PC's. This old argument is fucking boring.
He's right y'know. I've haven't had a blue screen in years. Mind you, my pc does all other kinds of crazy crap.
Let's not forget Germlin's Apple laptop crashing during his Nott Hill Arts Club set
*cough*
;-)
Has anyone sampled or used those new MAC pc machines
that have just been released?
they're not "Mac PC machines"
they're Macintosh computers that have migrated away from the Motorola/IBM PPC architecture to the new Intel cores.
They are horrendously quick, well priced and will last an age.
I was actually having this conversation with Mark of volcano! yesterday, about how the Powerbook he uses is four years old and still runs the latest music software with no issues.
Macs age a lot slower than PCs and as a result, maintain their resale value too.
The Macbook im getting is intel
i think they all are now
all except the PowerMac
and Xserve machines, yes.
Do you know how much they retail for?
Just roughly.
I tried to find them on the apple site...
They sound ideal. May pay a visit to the apple man soon.
the
13" £749 white MacBook will do you proud.
Really - so that is all I'd need
I thought I'd be looking at a grand plus.
This cheers me up somewhat (although I'll be forgoing a lot of wine for this book).
Onya. Merci. Grazias.
(looking at site now)
Im spending 1200
thats with 80 harddive and 1 mb ram and the apple care plan, i might be going ovr the top a little tho - but with also be using flash and illustrator and dreamweaver and photoshop and stuff
That's what I thought I'd be spending
I dunno - I think I am getting the software for free which is ACE.
Oh how exciting to be making an imminent purchase of white goods.
In the 50s women used to get excited over fridges and freezers. Today, it's all I-Books n i-Pods etcetera sdkfj asfjkasd fiasdjkfl sd
whilst the extra crap
would be 'handy', it aint necessary, as discussed further up the thread in the bit where i wrote about volcano!
Can these Macs dual-boot with Windows?
I remember you mentioning that but wasn't sure if it was a current or forthcoming feature of the new architecture.
I have an iBook G4
Its good.
END.
same here
it's better than good; it's great.
DOUBLE-END
What music software
is good for macs?
I love your user name
Ableton I guess.. There's lots of other software around, isn't there.
GET ONE OF THESE

that's excellent
my RE teacher (yess) used to have a mac that was just a little tower with a tiny screen on it, no monitor. i wonder why. bit silly. he came out of the closet last year, whilst studying to be a priest. moral of the story: buy a bigger computer.
Thanks
I'll try that
That's because XP turns the Blue Screens Off
I turned them on because I have a hardware fault I was failing to track down so I get them, Albeit in an XP form, frequently! ;-)
That's because you don't know
how to maintain a healthy system!!!
;-)
Nah, seriously
My memory or my northbridge is fuckered but I can't get round to doing anything. It's already out of date. I'll just buy a new one at some point :|
