Is anyone watching this? Jesus wept this is depressing.
they are being outplayed.
until we hit the 18 yard box. But defensively...they're scaring me a bit. Maybe I was being quite dramatic, but we seem to be missing...something...up top.
Sven doesn't seem to trust him for some reason
Don't fret. England always rise to the big occaisons
(/blind patriotic optimism)
after YEARS of tried and tested trusty 4-4-2, just cos rooney's injured we're switchin to a completely different formation the week before the world cup.
This formation lets Gerrard and Lampard roam a bit more than a 4-4-2 would
he's never tried it before?
this is pathetic.
joe cole just dived like a bitch.
Haha, that was farcical.
i hate football.
this is the worst game of football ever.
and hit the post
then later we hit the post again
we're a load of bollocks.
straight at keeper
'Jamie Carragher, not a natural passer of the ball'
How the FUCK can a professional footballer not be a natural passer of the thing?!? How can someone who gets paid to do so, and plays football EVERY DAMN DAY not be able to pass the fucking thing? YE GADS.
the worst game of football I've ever seen.
Trust me s-e-a-n you're really not missing anything.
Carragher is a football God. No, he can't play in midfield but there hasn't been a better English tackler of the ball since Tony Adams. CarraGOLD. Carradona. etc.
Bamos, that was a specific comment regarding Carragher being a hugely talented defender playing in a midfield role. He's been outstanding and efficient all season as a defender. But suddenly he's in a role where he's expected to be spotting strikers and knocking the ball upfield. So in that regard, no, he's not a 'natural passer of the ball'. More accurately, as a player he isn't honed to act in that way.
the problem is lack of rooneyism, i think gerrard needs to be deeper and start spreading the ball out to cole and beckham, thats where our strength lies, especially in beckhams crossing
Motsons resorted to discussing World Cup Anthems...
Bring on Walcott, Lennon and Downing!!!
robinson, neville and terry.
Hargreaves is coming on for GNeville.
w t f
apparently Neville felt a "twinge"
scored by the way s-e-a-n
John Terry this time.
is more like it. 2-0, JT with a header. Ace.
Needs to shut up.
And all footballers should be made to moonwalk on pitches and do the robot when scoring. Class finish by hightower to be fair.
Great finish, and great work from Cole (Though he was one step away from doing too much and losing it)
best celebration in world history, fact.
Give me some credit...I'd at least reach his waist, I am 6 foot.
is fuck awesome. his distribution and first touch is genuinely phenomenal. I don't understand anyone who says otherwise, the guy is too big and too good for most defenses to deal with.
I'd have him at Spurs in an instant, bless him.
Virtually everything said in this thread has been complete bollocks.
That was a good performance. Three very well taken goals. Joe Cole reminded me of Ronaldinho there - he had a great game.
We'll beat most teams if we play like that, and by all accounts we should play much better than that when it comes to the real thing. Quite why Sven played Carragher and then Hargreaves in the holding role, and not Carrick, I don't know...
he averaged a fuck up every four minutes. i was counting.
he's shite. just cos he had one decent run, doesn't make him fucking ronaldinho.
1 - Did he set up a goal that wouldn't have been scored without him? Yes.
2 - Did he do anything wrong to contribute towards Hungary's goal? No.
and by your assessment why single him out when beckham set up two goals?
I was just trying to make a point which couldnt be argued against. But you somehow managed it. I actually think Joe Cole had a really good game. So did Lee Dixon. He's the man. Beckham played pretty well overall - but to say he had a "great game" for putting in two good free kicks is silly.
Just imagine if Joe Cole never gave the ball away - we'd win by ten goals every game! Stop being a moany England fan. That was a highly promising performance by the team as a whole.
cole gets far too much praise.
he sees an awful lot of the ball, and doesn't use it well enough. for my money beckham was the best player on the pitch. his passing was spot on, he didn't make any obvious mistakes and his delivery was consistently superb.
cole's a good player. but i think he tends to let hyperbole go to his head, and think he's better than he is. he's not remotely world class. though i don't think we have a better option than him.
...a bad display by Joe's usual England standards, until the last 10 minutes, but you'll let him off.
Dave was awesome, bless him. But why the fuck take Carrick and play someone else in his position. Ok i sort of see the logic in giving Carragher a run out, cause he is a world class centre-back and its worth a try (dispite Carrick's passing being second only to an in-form Beckham in the England squad), but OWEN FUCKING HARGREAVES???!!! Jesus... I hope that was McClaren's idea...
sees value in playing beckham as the holding player, and letting gerrard play as he does at liverpool?
....obviously I mean i hope that the Hargreave substitution WASN'T McClarens idea. For the love of god I hope he ditches him as soon as Sven moves on.
the lad is attacking midfield player at club level, outshines Michael Ballack on a few occasions and ends up playing right back and holding midfield for England.
sort it out sven, just because you ask him to play right back or holding midfield players and he says 'alright guvnor' doesn't mean you should play him.
bring back phil neville (or not)
this thread was full of shit, cole had an alright game, beckham was very effective but im guessing people will forget again next week and start the beckham bashing. i did have a problem with our lack of invention without rooney, i mean owen is useless if the opposition plays deep, and our only way through is down the wings with becks then it would make sense to play crouch, im sure owen will score at the world cup, but if hes not doing anything get him off and get crouch on, theres no point in taking owen off to put walcott on, who clearly isnt ready for this. i think carrick will play against jamaica and if he doesnt fuck up then will get the nod over carragher, im optimistic we'll do alright.
No, I was watching iLiKETRAiNS. Useless...
It took a while to warm up though. I'll try and attribute this to post-season rustiness and I reckon we'll start at full tilt when it matters.
after we managed to put the first two away. The first half was quintessential English sludge.
Did Hungary qualify?
To what was basically a comfortable 3-1 victory, is typically English. Instead of celebrating our players strengths, everyone is picking away at their weaknesses. It's so lame.
...its hard to try a slightly new team/system combination and get results straight away when faced with the 'Bolton 1-0 Up In The Last 5 Minutes' formation Hungary set out with...
It doesn't work, we've seen that
It looks pretty but his range of passing means the ball passes Lampard and Gerrard by and they don't get into the game. Beckham had a good game tonight. He put in three or four world class crosses that each could have resulted in a goal. Can't be bad, can it?
I love Peter Crouch now. He's completely changed my opinion of him over the course of this season
than his critics say, but he's not world class. I'd choose Defoe over him any day.
too similar to Owen.
Who is better...
...I'd rather we played Peter. Although he needs to take to that celebration like Alan Shearer to his one hand raised, and Robbie Keane to his forward role shooting business.
Defoe can't yet hack it international level, he should be in the squad instead of Walcott who was out of his depth.
First half was dire attack against defence and when England decided to produce a bit of quality they made chances (last 5mins).
Second half was much better. England will always be very strong on set pieces and it's good to see Beckham still producing great quality. Set pieces will always be a great weapon against technically superior sides so to get two goals from them is promising (albeit against pretty poor defending). Joe Cole did give the ball away a fair few times but he was lively. I still think Gerrard and Lampard seem to be taking each other's space a lot of the time and this could be improved. Crouch showed his link up ability with some nice touches and scored a great goal.
And I echo the points about Hargreaves. By all means try Carragher there as he is going to win a lot more of the ball than Carrick, but give Carrick the second half. I honestly cannot see what Hargreaves offers the England team. It's whether Sven wants a ball winner or a passer in that position and Hargreaves can do neither.
It's actually quite comforting to think that a nation of football fans can unanimously agree on somebody based soley on his performances
Re Crouch/Defoe. What has Defoe done this season to deserve being in the squad? His confidence is in pieces and he hasn't got the potential/ability to change a game like Crouch can
Crouch to win us the World Cup? It's a tall order but he's taller
Defoe would be asking what Walcott has done this season to deserve being in the squad
But that wasn't the question. It was a matter of Parsefone choosing Defoe over Crouch
indeed, I concur. I mean Crouch had 25 minutes tonight, showed some great touches and took his goal really well.
scotty parker in (oooohhh, controversal).
but I guess that may have been McClaren's vote for the future. He has potential whereas Defoe has proved he has little.
is the singular worst footballer I have ever seen, it just defies any logic quite how he gets into the side (well, as a sub) on such a regular basis. I loved it when all of the pundits rounded on him after the game it made my day, NO my week.
(Maybe my year.)
i missed the aftermatch analysis, what did they say?
quite unprofessial actually. But then he is just a cheerleader. He said that OH must have a secret against Erikson for him to keep being played. The kind of thing you'd say on a forum like this but not national tele.
the correct sentiment put ineloquently
everything he did wrong, EVERYTHING. It was many, many things.
last world cup, but not any more.
As promising as Walcott looked- he played well tonight, considering- I'd still take Defoe over him. It was a very gutsy decision on Sven's part, but I just have a feeling it won't pay off.
if Owen and Rooney were fit I wouldn't have such a problem, but Defoe or Bent's experience would make them the more sensible option, but then Sven is too fecking sensible and I like the fact he is taking a risk for once
1 - Walcott now has as much international experience as Bent.
2 - Defoe will go, there's no way Rooney is going to be able to go I don't reckon. Sven needs to stop reading the papers and choose the sensible option (like he has done so much in the past) and not take Rooney.
3 - Hargreaves is shit, this is one thing I can't disagree with. I'd take Phil fucking Neville over Hargreaves!
I reckon 20 goals for a crap Charlton team merits a place. I can't see him not taking Rooney really, if only for morale purposes
Would be even worse if he was there, unable to play and England were losing! "Just imagine if Rooney could come on...!". Or if one of the strikers gets injured - none on the bench - or we would be forced to play the 4-5-1 to have someone to bring on. Just seems like a silly decision if he isnt going to be fit until the quarter finals or whatever. Though if we got to the final and he was fully fit to play, it would be shown to be a shrewd move.
My mate pointed out to me a fact about Bent I hadn't considered. The fact is he HAS scored 20 goals for Charlton and STILL isn't even 6th choice striker for England - plus - no clubs have attempted to sign him - Liverpool were interested then cooled their interest after, I assume watching him train a bit. Therefore he must actually be shit and has just happened to score 20 goals. I'm sure a shit striker has banged in a load of goals in a season before...
probably some others
Not SHIT strikers per se, but certainly not international class.
That's exactly what I meant - didn't come out right. You gotta be pretty damn good to score 20 goals in the premier league, but Darren Bent isn't getting picked / signed for a reason!
more like eight or something. And I agree about Bent probably not being international class but I would have put him in above Defoe, Johnson and Walcott.
never played for England surely
I remember 10 years ago when he used to play for us...
Did he not consider playing for Wales or Scotland in the end or something?
he was a good striker for us.
Wenger is rarely wrong...
he hadn't had glandular fever at such a bad time, I think he'd be in the squad. Parker vs Hargreaves is like Brazil vs Fiji.
chelsea he'd be a starter and probably at man utd playing week in week out.
chelsea = cunts.
is now my new favourite thing ever. EVER.
I want some sort of screen on my t-shirt, so I can show that video wherever I am.
I went to the quiz and missed Crouchy doing the robot? Dammit! Would he be the world's biggest robot, even bigger than Metal Mickey?
Hey always gets played out of position...
Though i suppose he will never play for England in his preferred position...
He really did look quite sharp in this game. I guess he's in form. Owen looked a bit sluggish. And kinda terrified of injury, understandably... stetching every 5 minutes, wobbling his legs about etc
I was just waiting patiently for Gerrard or Lampard to get a foot in the face or have their leg bitten off by a lion on the pitch or fall into a hole in the pitch that leads to the centre of the earth. Because our injury luck is fucking atrocious before major tournaments.
vision of the two of them running into each other at full tilt and decapitating each other. Which would have been kinda bad.
went down i screamed aloud...
It's the accent that does it for me.
who play out of the country get a really hard time proving themselves in the national side. Like, I've been lamenting the fact that Beckham automatically gets included every game, because I never see him play week in week out and so forget that he's still possibly the single best player at consistently hitting accurate crosses and free kicks in the entire world... Hargreaves - I don't know what he is exactly. I have never seen him do anything good. Where does he play again? Bayern Munich or somewhere? Apparently he's had first team starting club games all season, although I don't know in what position.
He sort of plays like Beckham does...i.e. Free Kicks, Crosses...
I think it looked pretty good. Gerrard didn't quite seem happy, but he was allowed to be in a position to get his head on the ball and score, so it can't be all bad... Lampard made himself quite busy ruling the central midfield in general... Beckham, J&A Cole and Neville did well with the darting runs and crosses... the back 4 looked very strong throughout, and the holding midfield player certainly filled a gap (more so when it was Carragher obviously). Admittedly, it was against an inferior side at a home ground, but even so. Pretty good I thought.
King wasn't injured...
...he hadn't been for the last few games of the season.
Claude Makelele was English
Xavi was english.
And not injured...
I supported Brazil.
There's a lot of negativity in the press about the system not working properly, but they need some time to get it working really. They can try it against Jamaica, and then probably Paraguay and T&T as they should be easy opposition. The big test will come against Sweden.
I'm happy for Crouch too, he holds the ball up well which is good for Owen. Nice celebration as well.
