what do you make of him..and his music?
much to make of
guy himself...but dont you think he has got some talent? I have listened to all three albums now and for every shit rhyme and cringeing line...there are also some moments which have me thinking 'fairplay that was clever'
of brilliance, but on the whole he doesn't inspire much feeling in me.
a good summary i think!
there is a tune on his second album and i swear my jaw dropped when i heard it....it was basically an account of a good friend of mines life. Tune is called 'wouldnt have it any other way'
i got a mate that does nothing but smoke spliffs on his sofa with his girlfriend and he moans about how he is wasting his life....and how he will come out on the weekend...but never does. and on the rare occasions he does come out..he longs to be back in front of the TV with his girl..watching tv and smoking. he always stresses about their relationship and how maybe they should split...but he would never split up with her and she is the same. You know 10 years down the line...they will be in front of the tv smoking spliffs and watching tv.
as shallow music with a dumb chav at the helm.
Recently I have given all 3 albums alot of listens and have totally revised my opinion.
Although some of the songs still grate ("Momento Mori" being a top contender) I have found his music as strangly uplifting. Sticking it on when you're doing dull jobs about the house and it makes it doing the dishes a whole lot more fun!
and your so right about some of the songs grating....that 'get out of my house' track from the second album...man thats awful. some 15 year old chav girl on it with a brummie accent. terrible.
but as i said...throught there are moments of very very clever lyricism and melody
very good. Not really my type of thing, but he has a real talent
Talent of stating the bleeding obvious all the time?
he's a poet, very inciteful and witty. but i am really disappointed with his current single- nothing remotely witty abt it at all- bland and soulless. first album was his best- so fresh, with some genius lyrics and great production.
best lyricist of our generation to sell more than five hundred thousand copies of an album
but could give or take his lyrics, particularly the recent stuff. i think he knows that a lot of people will lap up anything he writes because he's 'keeping it real' but i think musically he's trying to up his game. Even with 'When You Wasn't Famous', although the lyrics and the sentiment were pretty embarrassing, the way the music was almost like a sort baille funk and the way the sound of his voice went against it seemed to redeem it somehow.
So as a lyricist, well, nothing special. But as an arranger, pretty darn good i'd say.
some of the subjects he touches on really makes me think he is someone worth listening to....its a lot more relevant than anything else we listen to really
but i wouldn't go that far. Although i suppose i tdepends what you feel is relevant.
but he does a lot of rubbish tracks aswell, but some tracks like 'blinded by the lights' are genius, and the fun tracks like 'dont mug yourself' and 'fit but you know it' are good but the new albums a bit crap
Fo instance i loved 'Blinded By The Lights' but detested 'Dry Your Eyes'. Not much hag grabbed me about the new album, maybe it will once i find out what "pranging" means.
he seems to be doing it all himself, not as many samples, less leo the lion, which is fine, but i always kinda prefered the songs where he left it upto someone else to do the singing and he just rapped/talked the verses
bits of the first album but beyond that there hasn't been much to get excited about
