I don't think we should think of world resoiurces in terms of arbitrary national boundaries.
britain is a political entity (or a group of closely tied political entities since devolution) - like it or not
It isn't about national boundaries
It's about good/bad policy decisions
the point I'm making is that, within the context of a capitalist framework, it is impossible for the UK to be ecologically self-sufficient independently of the rest of the world.
The UK is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
Plus, much of the resources are used with people travelling to work because jobs are often not near home due to the abject lack of job security.
we seem to be agreeing that Great Britain is unsustainable
or summink, if every person on the planet used as much resources as your average brit, we'd need over 3 planets. One of the blokes on the report was pointing out the ridiculous things we do in this country resourse wise, like exporting vegetables to the continent and also import *exactly* the same type of vegetables. I went to sainsbury's the other day to buy some mussels and I find they've been imported from New Zealand. There's a thriving shell fish industry on the west coast of Scotland and we import mussels from New Zealand. I mean why? I could sort of understand it if mussels were seasonal but as far as I've been able to make out they're not.
how many planets for india ? or china? or the US?
that a country like the UK, where a sizeable percentage of the population has a lot of disposable income and there is a relatively high population density, has a high consumption rate of resources.
This isn't news. This doesn't mean it isn't a problem
that it has an increasingly higher rate of consumption
The analogy given by this report makes it clear;
In the period from January 1st to April 18th 2006 the UK will have consumed ALL its own resources and for the rest of the year it is relying on other countries' resources
Does it mean that all the cows (beef/milk) have died, all the crops have withered, the oil and gas in the North Sea have ceased to be available?
As I said, small country, large population, disposable income....
keeping up with the joneses
massive waste of resources
self-interested groups keeping inefficient practices going for short term profit incentives
general feeling of right to ownership
what IT means is that the UK is falling increasingly short on self-sufficiency
my 'footprint' is 3.8 global hectares, meaning that if everyone lived like me, we'd need 2.1 planets. :(
mine is 3.7
2.1 planets - and I don't own a car and I cycle everywhere - I need to go local vegan
I feel shamed
i use trains and little else for travel, but all my food is processed and packaged. hmmmm...
2.4 but i had to guess the size of my house...
we'd need 4.8 planets if everyone was like me
sharp_yet_blunt: lives in a solid gold, petrol-powered mansion. wipes his arse with veal.
im a disgrace, but i dont care! mwahaha...
I had to guess on his car fuel consumption but I assume all that bullet proof armor (sic) plating makes in pretty inefficient
IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 18.9 PLANETS!
he's a hero
gonna bring pollution down to zero
that's all i got.
We're the planeteers.
You can be one too.
Saving our planet is the thing to do.
Polluting and polluting is not the way,
hear what Captain Planet has to say!
Completely out of memory.
I can also do one of the Pokeraps.
[Catch 'em catch 'em gotta catch 'em all x4]
