Nestle

Slicky [Edit] [Delete] 38 replies 10:07, 13 April '06

Are people still boycotting Nestle products? I wondered after a discussion last night when I remembered that really should but wasn't 100% sure why. It's to do with aggressive milk powder marekting if you're interested.
Anyway, after googling I was amazed just how many brands they own from Loreal to Buitoni pasta.

So, do people boycott, if so just the onbvious Nestle brand or all of it?

  • their chocolate is a poor

3rd to the likes of Cadbury/Mars etc

    • Have you not seem that fake Nestle advert?

It says "Go on, boycott our products, just try... we're everywhere hahahaha"

and it's try. They even make Smarties the bastards. And shreddies. And everything else, ever.

      moker | 13 Apr '06, 10:10 | X
    • My Sister

has boycotted them for over 10 years.

She has tried to explain it to me on numerous occasions but it always ends up sounding like: "Nestle gave milk to starving children."

Hence I've never joined her quest.

It makes buying easter eggs for my neice and nephew a far more troublesome affair that it need be.

PS. You're right - Nestle do own practically every FMCG brand you can think of.

      • Oh it's simple

They gave free powdered milk to 3rd world mothers.

Said mothers used the milk in place of breastfeeding, therefore they ceased to lactate.

Nestlé then said "Aha, you can't NOT use our products now so they're not free any more. You'll have to pay us. Or your babies die."

That was gist, from what I remember.

        TheoGB @Troubled_Joe | 13 Apr '06, 10:28 | X
        • NO NO - the forumulae of the milk wasn't compatible nor nutritious enough for the 3rd world babies

and therefore, children started DYING. I learnt this at uni in international marketing class - they thought the one product would suit all countries and types of people but failed to modify the product... or sumthan??

    • i actually do

boycott them, which is annoying, cos i fuckin love milky bars. i dont really know why tho, someone told me to i think.

      • Now that's the best reason I've heard.

        I'm signed up now.

        • i know

its a poor reason, but i cant be fucked preaching to people. i'll do my stuff, you do yours....

          • I wasn't joking

It's a more honest answer than you get from most people when you ask them why they object to / boycott / protest about things.

            Troubled_Joe @meths | 13 Apr '06, 10:19 | X
      • you're in luck...

...Cadbury's have started making an equivalent of their old Dairy Milk animal bars in Dream format. I know what you're thinking, Cadbury's Dream tastes shit compared to Milky Bar, but... in the small thin chocolate format it tastes EXACTLY the same. So problem solved!

I've only seen them in one garage in Blaby, South Leicestershire so far though...

        snow_brigade @meths | 13 Apr '06, 10:14 | X
        • It sounds like they

haven't nailed the markting strategy just yet then.

          voiceofthepeople @snow_brigade | 13 Apr '06, 10:16 | X
    • i do

they're still as vile and psychopathically capitalist as they always were, despite their cosmetic efforts to present themselves as a caring company who's seen the error of its ways and has implemented a CSR programme...

or in SouthParkTalk: 'look Satan, I'm changing!'

      keveddy | 13 Apr '06, 10:15 | X
      • Surley

it's very difficult to go through life avoiding all vile and psychopathically capitalist goods and services.

Not a dig, just an observation.

        • Concured...

...where would we be if we listened to the anti-Fox/Murdoch lobby? Without the Simpsons and SKY thats where. And I for one would rather be dead. :)

        • We should all be boycotting French products to

due to the nuclear testing they did in the 1990s. And Norway, for their continued Whale hunting. And america for their general Imperialism.

          So basically, don't buy anything.

          moker @Troubled_Joe | 13 Apr '06, 10:19 | X
        • true

and i'm not advocating giving it all up and going to live in a cave by any means - however, in the end you have to be answerable to yourself and your conscience. I can't reconcile giving my money knowingly to that company because of their past and present record. ditto for nike, reebok, gap, starbucks, macdonalds, etc etc etc. yes, i know...

          if anyone's interested, btw:

    • Manchester Uni Students Union boycotted them back in my day

but I've never really bothered. I like milkybars too much.

However in the grand scheme of things I probably don't use much in the way of Nestlé products.

      TheoGB | 13 Apr '06, 10:27 | X
      • yeah, but theo

we all know you were really the milky bar kid back in the day, so you can stop your street teaming of nestle right now... ;)

        keveddy @TheoGB | 13 Apr '06, 10:28 | X
        • I refuse

          to boycott.

I hate Africans and all other poor people.

          fullerov @keveddy | 13 Apr '06, 10:38 | X
          • I wasn't allowed nestle as a child, and to this day I have never tasted a milky bar but the full on boycott became impossible for me when they bought rowntrees

            gay4conoroberst @fullerov | 13 Apr '06, 10:54 | X
    • Even the title of this thread is controversial on DiS I thinketh

      Rose-Kitten | 13 Apr '06, 10:57 | X
      • i boycott nestle

but i really should find out more about all the other companies i should be boycotting, and boycott them too. but i stupidly don't want to because i need to eat things.

i do boycott topman etc and eat fair trade chocolate when it's actually available though

        ex_cynic @Rose-Kitten | 13 Apr '06, 11:07 | X
        • cereal

is the worst, not having a car I don't have access to the dearth of cereal available to shoppers at tescos and other shopping venues. So I'm left with a cornflakes, weetabix, kiddies cereals, assorted 'premium' brands, and a vaste array of Nestle brands which are the only appealing ones.

          smiggs @ex_cynic | 13 Apr '06, 16:17 | X
      • No it's not

the lack of é means it can be taken to refer to 'nestling' against someone. Breasts are good to nestle against.

        Mmm...breasts.

        • where?

          guntrip @TheoGB | 13 Apr '06, 11:27 | X
    • I boycotted Nestle for years

apart from green Aero. I'm such a selfish twat

      yo_soy_welshmun | 13 Apr '06, 11:55 | X
      • well that's kind of my point

I can easily boycott coffee and their chocolate but then you realise everyhting else they make, vittel, perrier, loreal and therefore now the body shop, findus, the list just goes on and on.

I feel bad but then you remember everything else that is bad and corporate like Mcdonalds, cocacola, Tesco and supermarkets in general and it's just so inconvenient.

I would dearly love to tootle round farmers markets buying all my stuff from ethical shops and sites but I just don't have the time, money or if I am honest inclination. But I do try.

        Slicky @yo_soy_welshmun | 13 Apr '06, 12:00 | X
        • if

you buy fair trade from tesco you are still giving a proportion of the money to tesco. so whats the point, you might as well get the cheapest thing as fair trade and organic is more expensive.
