Does anyone ever get paranoia about them not flowing well enough?
But once it's on the tape there's not a lot I can do about it.
and the beginning of next to make sure they flow. Opener tracks and closer tracks are also *pressure* to get them right.
satisfied even doing that
I figured the easiest way to get them to start and finish well was to start with the first track from an album and finish with the last track from an album... clever, eh?
Deceptacon - Le Tigre

"flow" per se.
but there needs to be some coherency or it sounds weird.
is whether I've gone too obscure or not obscure enough.
I usually end up putting a huge range of stuff on them just to be sure, but I feel that the perfcet mixtape exists for most people and the best I can usually manage is 50% good.
The last one I made was about 85-95% good, but I knew the person I was making it for very well and I had a very clear idea how I wanted it to be.
where the first letter of each song title spelled out 'I W A N T T O R U B F A E C E S O N Y O U R D O G'
boy was I embarrased when I realised.
about people thinking that the lyrics directly express my feelings towards the recepents.
well, not so much now that i have a girlfriend, but back when i used mixtapes to woo young ladies, i'd stringently avoid any songs with the lyrics "i love you" to avoid sounding like a stalker.
but two things:
1) if you have any creativity, your mixTAPES will write themselves - as youre dubbing one song on, youre thinking of what the best song in your collection would be to follow it. i rarely put full songs on mixtapes, instead cutting across to other songs to make my own structures, and fitting more bands and songs into 90 minutes.
for mix CDs, i put the tracks i want into a play list, and like others, choose a good opener and ender and just play the last few seconds of one into the first fw of another to see if its ok. contrary to wishpig's opinion, this isnt about making "smooth" transitions, just remotely pleasing ones. its not blanding out differences, just pointing out slight similarities and common threads. also, if one song has a long fade out, sometimes its just plain wrong to follow t with something with a long fade in, cos you end up with a big load of near silence in the middle.
i just ditched a tape because it didn't flow right. i have to just guess too...
Also I crossfaded stuff on a cd for the first time the other day. I feel dirty. But sometimes stuff just stops straight away as it's supposed to segue into the next track on the album. Crossfading kept the flow going.
are all over the place.
cos my music is so brilliant it matters not where it starts and ends
that putting a song like "Grace Cathedral Park" by Red House Painters or "Nothing Better" by Postal Service will make them think you're secretly trying to tell them you don't like them. Because to some extent the voice of the people you choose becomes your voice.
which is why I eventually gave up participating in the DiS one, since it took me too long.
I usually end up putting it all on minidisc and listening to it for a few days, to get the order just right.
and I thought it was only me that was this sad...
worry about openers and closers. I worry more about the content though... after my charming gentleman friend put 'sex is boring' (ballboy) on mine :s
i used to worry - but then worked out that no onw was listening anyway so who cares eh?
there's so many 15 minute long records i want bits from on CDs i make...
i once realised a cd i was planning was actually only 5 tracks long.
check to see how each track flows into the next once i have chosen the desired songs. If i don't like the order, i rearrange them, but i never change the first and last song once they have both been decided. Also, I never use the 2 second gap between songs, does anyone else? I tell Nero not to bother.
I love lots of short songs
The most I've put on a cd though is about 22ish.. not loads but I've received one that only had about 14 on
my most is 23 and least is 15. I do obsess over flow sometimes but like some people said it's good not to get too homogenic.
or recieved a mixtape! i must be strange
i think i would be too indecisive about what songs to put on it, running order, wether the person would like it etc.
with the short song theme.
When's the next one?
