Theo in rare cooking moment
I had some baby new potatoes left over so I'm cooking bombay potatoes from this recipe:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/bombaypotatoes_1406.shtml
and having a pack of mixed indian snacks from Tescos. They will taste a bit shit, though, I reckon... They don't look like ones I got at Glastonbury before.

I've just been reminded that I am a terrible cook
well sometimes it works out. Tonight I just ended up with oily, yellow potatoes covered in fried mustard seeds.
I'll have to try again some day. I'm now going to go off and do the washing up and sulk.
if at first you don't succeed
give up.
Olive oil
is that bad for Indian cooking? That's all we have. Maybe I should be using something else...
that'll be nice
what are you having/did you have them with though?
No they were rubbish
as I said above. :-( I will have to practice. Just wondering if the olive oil was bad.
I just had them with the Indian Snack selection from Tescos. Bajhis, pakoras and samosas, etc.
oh, I didn't notice that
olive oil isn't traditionally used in Indian cooking, but I use it for everything. It shouldn't be a problem. Maybe you used too much?
I measured it out
I think I misjudged the heat of the oil and reckoned it was cracking the mustard seeds when it wasn't. Or possibly I just had too few of them and the termeric to make it work.
Also I think the potatoes should have been diced more.
i hate it when this happens
you think 'oh i'm going to cook something ACE' and you know exactly what its going to look/taste like in your head, then when its finished it just looks like cack and then you're disappointed and give up on cooking altogether and eat cup-a-soups for the rest of the week.
:(
that always happens when I try and make pancakes
I normally end up scraping a sad little lump of glue into the bin :(
Aw man
I think the last time I did pancakes they worked okay, but I used a pre-mixed thing I think...
I am pretty rubbish at cooking...
I'm pretty good at cooking
it's just the pancakes :(
Well I'll have to come over
and we can make vegetable pancakes together. Hurrah.
Though they're kind of dull I think as a food so maybe not...
You should use ghee
and if you haven't got that then use groundnut or sesame oil. Olive oil isn't really used in Indian cooking.
Ah, ghee, eh?
Where do you get that from?
Cheers
Shops that sell asian stuff
and big supermarkets. It's a big of liquid butter. Mmmm.
^^^^
Prole attack?
TIN
big TIN of liquid butter.
Aha!
I assume it must be vegetarian too? Or is that a mistaken assumption?
It's just clarified butter, you can make your own if you want.
yeah
you just melt butter and pour it through a tea towel, don't you?
Well, yeah
you have to get rid of all the shit that collects on the top when you melt it and you should have a clear liquid, then just filter it.
It's quite bad for you but it's ace.
And, it comes in small tins too.
does it?
that's the only reason I hardly ever buy it - because I've only ever seen it in Indian restaurant-sized tins. Mmm, I'm thinking lots about ghee now...
I had some shopping firsts today
Spinach
Asparagus
Prawns
Haddock
And I just cooked a really awesome chilli.
This week has been declared a HEALTHY week.
that sounds nice
you've never bought spinach before?! Wow, you're in for a treat. It's the best food ever.
agreed
Spinnach is ace.
I'm a bit scared
I'm not really one for straying from the beaten track when it comes to food.
Especially if it involves green-stuff.
I don't find vegetables very exiciting/fufilling.
I am aiming to change this.
YES
do it. Green vegetables are totally exciting. Buy some tortilla wraps, then cook the spinach with olive oil, garlic, onions, tomatoes (and dill if you can be bothered to get any). Then put it in the wraps with some feta and pine nuts, make them into little parcels, brush the tops with olive oil, and put them in the oven. Greektastic.
Why am I hungry again? I've eaten so much food tonight.
I was Squirell to cook for me
Veg are great, but in Britain we just tend to boil things until they've practically melted. Boiled veg is blander than bland. Pan fried broccoli on the other hand, is ay-may-zing.
was = want
mmm
fried broccoli with garlic and ginger. I want Monpot to cook for me. Shall we meet somewhere halfway between Cardiff and London?
Swindon?
Where you're allegedly from.
Don't suppose
you've got a recipe for felafel?
yeah
that is half way! Well, I live a 20 minute drive from Swindon, but I guess my mum could pick us up on her way home from work.
So, DiS meet up/ cookathon at my parents' house?
Er, maybe not actually. But mmm, food.
You be Green Peppers
I'll be Red Tomatoes.
I've never made them
but Rose Elliot does!
8oz chick peas
1 large onion
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
good pinch of chilli powder
1 clove garlic, crushed
sea salt
freshly ground black pepper
to finish
wholewheat flour to coat
oil to shallow fry
yeh that's what I thought it'd be
-though in the Turkish I went to on Saturday night they also put a pepper in it.
Apparently you fry them to start, then finish them off in the grill.
I might try them one day.
i hate this thread
its making me SO SO SO hungry.
Eat some toast then
-or follow one of Squirell's delicious easy-to-make recipes.
I have nearly all those things!
I'm getting hungry again too.
It's cause I got thinking about the warm BBQ chicken wraps I'm making for lunch tomorrow. YUM.
classic theo
telling me!
this is theo before he went mainstream.
people on dis used to be so polite
yeah its well mumsnet
Yeah, it was before The Nightshift.
Oh man,
I just this'd something from seven years ago. I have made an absolute cunt out of myself haven't I guys?
I love these old threads getting bumped.
You get legendary DiSers like Bobbygeorge re-appearing.
Did someone nick your other username password? :D
OH!
2006
I actually started TheoGB back in 2002ish I think.
But when I came back in 2005 I found the password reminder thing turned off because someone had been hacking with it or something (!!!) so I started the new account. then when I got to 10,000 posts I discovered I could get my TheoGB password back so...
Wow
This is like finding out about the 1993 World Trade Center bombing all over again.
I made this mistake at first...
thought it was a foley parody version.

Shame
Yeah, I lost the website due to an oversight.
I put everything on http://ishotthedeputy.wordpress.com but the formatting's all buggered. I never could get around to fixing it all.

these are amazing
It lost all the names of the writers, unfortunately. They're 'in' there but on the pages.
I think that last one might have been one of many Julia Vergho wrote.
