Got some Basil & Tomato soup that's use by the 21st. I have nothing else to eat.

use by or best before?
My housemate ate some eggs that have been in our fridge since November the other day. He was fine. I'm thinking 2 days gone soup should be okay.

there's a few days between the Use By and when it actually goes off, just to cover the companies legally.
Generally, if things dont smell or look funny (or funnier than usual), don't eat it.
I eat bacon way after it's 'use by'.
'use by' is a whole different kettle of fish to 'best before'.

the supermarkets are correct and they don't need to be?
though to be fair, 1) we keep them in the fridge too, and 2) I expect eggs get sold quite quickly in shops so they're on shelves for not very long, whereas they can hang around a while once someone buys them.
