at last some decent secular programming,
but Dawkins gave the most boring lecture I've ever been to. I'd like to forgive him, but I can't. If only I was a Christian...
i wanted to get home in time to watch this, but lo i'm at my desk where i've been since 10am. gah.
i have :-P
It was terrible. He didnt even address the issues most of the time.
He wanted to say "science and religion cant coexist", then went around talking to loads of religous extremists who also thought science and religion couldnt coexist.
Some of his arguments were deeply flawed even by his own standards. Like: Mary couldnt have ascended to heaven.. it was a story made up 600 years later, and passed around by word of mouth. How the fuck did he know it hadnt been passed around before that? Absolutely awful.
the bit where the preacher said to him 'your grand children might see this tape and laugh at your beliefs' and he was like 'wanna bet' in a cry voice seemed quite pathetic and then he made out he was chucked out and threatened strangely not on film. And at the begining he mocked creator theories because 'who created the creator' as if science adequately explains how something came from nothing in the first place.
Although I think the preacher came across as just as arrogant as he was trying to suggest scientists were.
He didnt really argue with them. Because he wasnt arguing with people he could argue with. It was always just two people talking past each other. Utterly pointless.
The main thing I took out of it was that dogmatic faith in the scientific method, is quite like religious fundamentalism.
about big brother ya?
but seriously i would of liked to have watched it bugger
actually enjoyed it, it is definitely biased, but in a climate where we allow religious programming of a similar (non) standard to recieve funding, I'm all for it.
I take image change's point about him not really making a thorough argument, this is probably because its a series. Could possibly have been better as a 2hr documentary.
Will watch it again if i'm at a loose end, possibly just as a vent because of the disproportionate number of practicing customers I'm in contact with at the mo...
Dawkins comes across as a self-righteous tosser. He never accepts anyone elses arguments, so convinced is he of being right. Clearly a clever man, but not even close to being as clever as he thinks he is.
Not really, science has created the potential to destroy the earth many times over what with nuclear weapons and whatnot all it would take would be a catastrophy which just seems to be enevitable one day, or it may happen less suddenly science demand on evidence means that risks that cannot be proven go ignored, take the global warming mess we are in. It may not be pure scientific method to blame but it is science as applied in the real world and we shouldn’t separate the two
a man whose views I do not agree with at all. Bah, I was going to write something really harsh but then had a conscience attack and decided to tone it down.
Seriously though, from what I've seen and read of Mr Dawkins, he refuses to acknowledge that people can be intelligent and devoutly religious. In the world of Dawkins, the only reasons for having faith are negative - cultural inertia, fear of death, needing comfort, safety in community etc. Clearly nobody is religious because they believe their faith system most accurately describes how the world really is, oh no.
all i'm looking at is the next 2 hours being full of Big Brother.
and he was very humble when answering questions, I'd got the impression he'd grown up a lot since his youthful outbursts, but maybe not it seems...
It's like none of you actually heard a word he said.
I thought it was a really brave programe.
it could have been a brave programme, if he'd tackled it thoroughly, but for a clever man, he's somewhat half-baked.
i guess it takes a certain talent to interview extremist muslims and mentalfaced conservative christians, got them to spout off about the evils of the world and women dressing like whores and creationism - and still come off looking like the bigoted one.
preaches athiesism almost as if it was a relgious faith of its own, yet fails to see this irony in his own argument.
it did quite interesting viewing, wonder how many complaints they got
which is partly what makes religion easy to attack.
But my 'one' pint turned into 5.
twenty minutes but I honestly found it to be really fucking condescending. Although obviously extremists are just plain nuts, if people choose to be religious just let them and get on with it, he just came across as an arsehole, especially when he was like 'all these poor deluded people' etc etc.
Perhaps for some people religion is the only thing that gives them hapiness so fuck Dawkins.
AND its not as if he was saying anything original, Freud in 'Future of an Illusion', Nietzsche to name but two and i'd be interested to hear his views on someone like Buber or Feuerbach who point out the positive influence of religion...
I think this programme ruled. It's about time there was a mainstream, well publicised programme about how religion, all religion, extremist or otherwise basically causes bigots, rascists, homophobics and the rest...
I bloddy hate religious people. It's like something happens like the Tsunami happened, they wheel out the Archbishops to gabble shit about nothing. Pointless.
I saw no problem with his programme. He basically pointed out that anyone who believes any kind of organised religion was a moron and it causes divisions in society.
He had to put some kinda extremist angle on it tomake it more "topical" but the points he made were fine and completely valid.
It amazes me that someone like Dawkins says reasonable stuff and people shoot him down, but some Vicar will talk tripe about Adam and Eve or the three wise men and everyone's happy about it. Obsurd.
That's why you're on your own!
and it's what Dawkins was saying.
But yeah, I'm not exactly going with the flow with that opinion.
You can't seriously think that all people who are involved in organised religion are morons...
He missed the point that it's not the actuall beliefs that cause conflict but the refusal to tolorate others points of view which he was equally guilty of. He probably justifies it to himself by thinking 'but it's different for me I know im right the world would be a better place if everyone agreed with me' as all the fundamentalists also do. Im a bit suspicious, I think it was deliberately bad so that could be easily criticised by religious types and not upset them too much.
terminator could happen people
firstly, 'science' also created the internet, which you are using to your great benefit right now.
Also, 'science' is not to blame for global warming, it is people's ignorance of the scientific effects thats burning hydrocarbons has on the atmosphere.
If people knew what we know today(from scientific study) then we would not be in this 'mess'.
but he wasn't against just extremists, he was against all religious organisation. And so am I.
To be fair saying "moron" is just being flipant, but I do beleive that religion breeds hatred in any form. The nicest, most touchy feely Christians of all talk about how being gay is wrong just because it's what the bible says. All religions preach this type of nonsense.
But it's knee-jerk statements (eg about morons) that make opinions from both sides less convincing...
about his lecturing being wrong, he sounded like he was reading a bible verse.
dawkins is pretty much an atheist fundamentalist. he can be the third corner of christianity vs islam.
wouldn't say thats true of all christians, as i've said ^ I think believing in any thing is wrong. It's just this guys faith in science annoyed be, science isn't truth it's temporary consensus, it's not value free discovering knowledge to enlighten people it's mainly funded by the milatary/industry and Im really bad at arguing stuff so ill stop
so all this to look forward to again. Still, I have to say this is the most thoughtful thread I've ever read on DiS.
im not missing eastenders again
Um, but I don't watch it mind...
This guy is smug, he's not doing science any favours, he's got all defensive and I think he's got a lump in his throat the preachers made some fair points. I think believing in anything is arrogant and the cause of all conflict because deep down you have to believe everyone else is wrong, but that in itself is kind of a belief so it kinda cancels itself out.
So root of all evil, I think so far historically religion is wining but don't write off science yet, I think it has more long term potential in terms of completely destroying the earth.
