Holidays across the pond
Hey up,
I'm currently planning to blow some savings on a trip to N.America for a month. Thinking of starting in Toronto (because I have a sad obsession with ice hockey) and then down into the states. Can anyone recommend some good places to go? Any tips?
Alternatively, feel free to continue the discussion about scrotum shaving from yesterday.
Ta.
new york city
says it all.
Stay away
from the southern states, People there are strange (most of them), It's like they just believe everything the TV tells them. New York is cool but easy to get lost in.
Tour around the South West
That is a once in a life time trip.
I suppose it depends on what you are after. Bright Lights Big City, or somthing a little more laid back.
Ideally,
a combination of the two.Is that possible?
Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated.
How
are you travelling about? Car/bus/train/plane?
Well Toronto
is a great city, nice laid-back feel about it but with plenty to do.
You could do a trip from there to the mid-west (though I'm not too sure about the visiting qualities of anywhere other than Chicago) and through New England (Boston's great too).
But end up in New York and give yourself at least a week there - to be honest everything else is just a warm-up; you're mostly going to be in cities and there's more to see there than anywhere else.
Travel wise would be train/bus - these are the cheapest options right?
New York was always on the agenda, but my original plan of " a couple of days" probably isn't going to be enough.
Anywhere on the East Coast which is a bit rubbish? I've been told New Jersey is a bit like Essex.
I don't see that there's much
point in going to places like New Jersey (one big suburb) or, god forbid, Pittsburgh. Stick to the major cities (NY, Boston, Washington DC etc) with maybe a trip to Cape Cod or somewhere else small and coastal?
I haven't been but I imagine Montreal would be fun.
Some of the best times I had were in really small towns (some of them real hicksville) but I was working near them and don't reckon it would be much fun just arriving and finding your way about such places.
It's been a few years, but my mates and I had a train pass with Amtrak that worked out good value - the trains are way more comfortable (and less likely to be populated with absolute nutters) than the Greyhound - although i guess the bus is a sort of 'thing to do that you've seen in the movies'.
Depending on your cash situation you can save a bit by sleeping on overnight trains, too.

New Jersey has the Pine Barrens which are great.
I too have an obsession with Ice Hockey....

Toronto is fun
but expect a lot of snow. I'll be back there from new year
Also the winter festival in quebec
I'm going! end of january I think.
Come to San Diego, Cali!!
Im here at the mo and its rad! then go south for an hour or so and your in the nice part of Mexico! Generally most of California is a sweet place to visit, so much to do in this state and we have the best politicians.
Pine Barrens
isn't that where Christopher and Paulie get lost in the BEST EPISODE EVER of the Sopranos?
