What time does it start? Is it on TV...
Here's hoping for a good one.
We have to do something this World Cup...
this evening at around 8, I believe.
i'm hoping for
then watch us finish 3rd after 3 0-0 draws
go either way. Playing Togo or Angola would be fun, but you know we'll end up with Holland, USA and Australia and get beaten three times.
Like turn up and be humiliated
Best news is that as we are seeded, we cant get drawn against Germany, Italy, France, Mexico, Spain or Brazil. Wicked.
Bad news is that we can still get Holland.
I'm so excited about the World Cup already. Literally so excited.
I am very excited also.
We can do well, we hae the players...
Its whether we have the manager or not...
I remember actually feeling physically sick when I found out Beckham might not be fit for the World Cup in 2002.
Watch Rooney break his leg the day before our first game.
i have a feeling
But only cause Sven said he didnt want to...
i am a huge conspiracy theorist about world cup draws.
if england and scotland got through, they'd have been playing each other.
same goes for australia at some point there will be a whole "ashes" repeat thing.
And the USA.
get a world cup wallchart in the sunday times and spend hours and hours staring at it, working out all the possible permetations after only the first round of games.
being a world cup geek RULES :D
I was even more of a geek when i was younger...
I used to watch F1 and draw all the cars, and I used to guess beforehand everyones positions and see how many i'd get correct...
I did that in 1998. By my calculations we couldn't fail to win. I think my workings were a bit off.
But this time, in Germany too!
were gonna get put out by germany on penalties, its destined to happen
is very possible. Probably with some disallowed goals thrown in for good measure.
and red cards...
are the worst :(
I shall be watching with almost moist anticipation. The great thing about this World Cup is that it's in Germany, so the time difference doesn't suck. Watching us beat Argentina in 2002 was GREAT, but 8am kick offs aren't usually my cup of tea
In seven months time a lot of us will be in a pub full of England fans cheering on like a burberry clad hooligan. I canny fucking wait
i will be in a pub full of burberry clad hooligans cheering on the opposition.
I won't obviously, (I love everyone) i'll be watching with the sound turned down in case i hear motty 'commentating'.
that, we have the players? This is why England are so shit, we always think we are gonna win before we even get there. Its not so long ago we lost to Northern Ireland-Nil. It was nothing to do with Sven.
We do have the players.
Everyone knows that. We have some of the best players in the world...
It's nearly time! I also am more excited than I should be.
drinking and hoping we dont draw USA, Holland, Czech Republic or Ivory Coast. Man, I just love FIFA run draws, they are so exciting. I wonder how many languages they will translate the host into.
for no reason i reckon.
and their beanpole striker who's name im not even gonna attempt to spell.
I can feel it in my bones
england will get a relatively easy group considering who they could have had......they will start off quite poorly, drawing a game they should have won......the next game they will play ok and win 1-0...by a penalty.....then in the final game...they will win 2-0 or 3-1 and the press will be salivating and saying the world cup is in the bag....and hailing rooney as the next king of england..................then they will either go out in the next round to a portugal or spain type side.......or they will win on penalties and get through to the quarters where they will lose....with a defender or keeper making a massive cock up.......or some sort of controversy will occur
they will def be out of the competition after the quarters
Bet you 20p.
Heidi Klum is on the telly box
freekick taking goalkeeper? Who was always crap on Champ Manager.
Ahhh Roger M! Legend
the four pot pickers on the right took on the four pot pickers on the left, who would win in a 4-a-side match???
is so shit !
And France got Togo !
What do we think to that?
Ivory Coast would have been easier
paraguay are pretty shit these days.
i reckon ivory coast will be a surprise team
Sven's homeland of course
Yeah, I think PAraguay and Sweden is a fairly kind draw.
and his inexplicable bursts of enthusiasm
"Germany met Poland back in..."
*insert WW references at will*
the 2 France - switzerland in the qualifying round. They were awful !
Group C is a bit tasty - Argies, Ivory Coast, Serbia and Netherlands
should finish top 2
I'm happy with our draw - if we can't get out of that group then we deserve all the stick that will come our way
Poland in round two if we were to win the group. Which we probably want to, given that we'd more or less certainly have to play Germany otherwise...
But it's not quite the walk over that Alan 'Bitter' Hansen suggested
I think both Paraguay and Sweden could take points off us. But yeah, we should go through obviously
Also, there's a chance we might meet Germany in the qualifying round. Bring on The Hun!
I predict the team who will have the old cliche 'dark horses' will be the Ukraine, might stick a tenner on them to make the quarters at least.
a very kind draw. I predict we'll stumble to an unconvincing win over Paraguay, hammer Trinidad and then draw 0-0 with Sweden. After that... who knows? If we win our group we play the runner up in Group A which will probably be Poland so that should be easy. By my guesswork we'd then face a quarter final against whoever comes second in Group C (Argentina or Holland).
Group E looks unpleasant too, Italy, Czech Rep and the USA!
Dark horses? I reckon Ivory Coast and Australia.
it's all set for us to go out of the quarter finals as usual!
I'm excited already!
I mentioned above, I get a form of dread every major international football tournament. Mainly because everyone suddenly thinks we are second only to Brazil in terms of greatness. Our group isn't that hard, but Sweden have Zlatan who is on a par with Rooney on his day, and Paraguay are a young side who could easily get a draw off us. Im excited about the tournament as a whole, especially the matches in group c and e, but not so much the hype and jingoism around England.
There will be hype in every country...
we really can win it. Brazil won't win though...
we're only good in theory ... look at how we actaully play in matches, rubbish
well not rubbish but certainly not like world cup winning side
will fuck everyone up
Brazil won't win.
I am certain of this...
england will they have terrible tabloid brought on delusions
Many people rate England highly...
England have failed oftenm but this is the best England team for 15-20 years...
Serbia & Montenegro
Fancy England to win this time, especially if they top the group.
The coach has come out and said that he will only play 3 out of Ronaldinho, Kaka, Robinho, Ronaldo and Adriano.
Robinho has been crap for Real Madrid, he only seems to be quick, Ronaldo is now fat and you can't really play Kaka and Ronaldinho in the same team as they are too similar.
Remember kids that a European team has won the World Cup every time it's been held in Europe apart from in 1958.
Italy are going to win it, they even have superstition on their side and have an easy group and easier potential route to the final.
i hate bein scottish, football convos are never much fun
in recent tournaments. And I think they are just getting older. I don't think their group is that easy, and they start slowly.
Kaka and Ronaldinho are both match-winners, and yes they are similar (like Lampard and Gerrard are similar) so it'll be difficult to have both players control the midfield, there would be no balance.
I reckon Ronaldo is past it, Robinho isn't quite there yet but will get better. What about Diego? I think Adriano is the best striker in the world at the minute.
Watch out for Leo Messi for Argentina; the new Maradona apparently.
Of course Italy have the best defense around, and the world's best keeper as well.
Up front Luca Toni can't stop scoring, and Totti and Del Piero have something to prove as it could their last major tournament, remember Gilardino as well.
A midfield containing Gattuso and Pirlo must be taken seriously.
Diego hasn't set the world on fire at Porto, Juninho of Lyon is a much better player and is a massive threat from free kicks.
Agree about Messi, when he's played he has been awesome.
I haven't seen anything of Diego, just heard people raving about him.
I actually think England have a better defence than Italy (not trying to be biased), and Italy's defence is not getting any younger. I sometimes question the commitment of the likes of Totti and Del Piero, last tournament of not. But if they do go out with the right attitude (a lot of the Italian side could be playing in their last tournament) then they'll be a big threat to anyone. However, I fancy Brazil's attack to break down them.
is how its really open. You could say what tom_from_sparks said about Spain. Xavi (if he recovers) and Xabi Alonso in midfield, Raul with something to prove in attack, Torres in his first world cup, Puyol in defense. On paper, they have a fantastic team. Same with Holland.
Plenty of Spanish players aren't having a good season, Torres and Joaquin being two of them. Raul isn't the player he once was.
Their defense apart from Puyol is only average, probably be Pablo of Atletico (again not on form), Del Horno (yeah he's good) and Salgado (only good on the attack).
Holland could do alright, but we all know how they self destruct before most tournaments! and they have a hard passage to the final.
is on his way to Newcastle apparently! (thanks to Luque, again, apparently)
He's not had that good a season, but I think Torres is a superb player and will only get better. He's got incredible talent for his age. He could set the WC alight like Rooney did for Euro 2004.
For Holland, Sneijder will be key, I think. I reckon he's a class player. But I don't think, again, that they'll challenge Brazil.
see them beat Chile or at the Confed Cup? Ronaldinho and Kaka can play together, probably both behind Adriano. They have 2 good-ish centre backs in Juan and Lucio.
If Italy have a bit of luck, and Luca Toni stays in form, Totti doesn't self destruct and Buffon recovers from his injury they could win. But easy group? USA, Ghana and the Czechs? Thats hard!
Messi is good, but Riquelme is the boy for Argentina, with him Argentina destryed us, but when he went off we scored 2 goals.
when we were super hyping England after them beating Argentina Italy went out and easily beat Holland 3-1.
Even with Buffon out there's still Peruzzi (having a very good season) and Buffon is going to be back in a week or two.
If anyone is suffering from their players getting old it's the Czech Republic, only Rosicky isn't looking for his pension and the younger crop of players aren't that good.
USA are handy, plenty of pace. I wouldn't bet against Freddy Adu exploding on the world stage although perhaps the World Cup is a little too soon.
Ghana have a very good midfield of Appiah, Essien and Muntari but not a lot after that.
are one of the best sides in Europe, very solid.
Americans I don't know a lot about, only Adu and even then who knows what he's going to do in the World Cup?
I bet we will have the oldest team !
brazilian team ever. and argentina not just friendly argentina in the world cup will be fearsome
holland ... they might have been seeded but they certainly aren't crap at the moment
brasil will kick the fuck out of everyone. argentina already experienced this lately...... adriano/ronaldo up front, supported by ronaldhino, kaka, & robinho....
W O W.
The best Brazilian team ever...
they didnt even win the South American group.
They are a great team, but i still don't think they will win. European World Cups are almost always won by European teams.
apparently they did win their group.
Stupid lying newspaper...
if we do i'll be happy but very surprised. Im not looking past Brazil, Argentina or possibly Holland or Italy. Brazil's and Argentina's performances at the Confederation Cup this year showed that the whole south American teams not being able to cope with Europe thing it totally outdated now. Almost all their players play their club football in Europe now.
Also, Riquelme to be player of the tournament.
I think they are head and shoulders above any other team on paper. While I haven't seen much of them as a team, the players that could potential start in their side just doesn't bear thinking about if you're not a Brazil fan. The forward line (consisting of five of the best players in the world) just blows everyone else out of the water. Don't know much about their defence but I don't think it'll manage with the players they have going forward.
