Londoncentric

prole-art-threat [Edit] [Delete] 59 replies 14:29, 25 November '05

I've realised over the last few months that these boards seem to evolve around London meetings and people in London going on about all things 'Capital' which may come across as rather inclusive and Londoncentric - I hope this isnt putting other 'users' off from joining in or even coming to these events - I for one am a keen foe of cliques and would be horrified if that's how people outside the M25 thought about it - please everyone tuck in to the greatness that is everyone on this board

does this make any sense?

  • Couldn't you have just put this in a PM?

    bobbygeorge | 25 Nov '05, 14:30 | X
    • oh sorry.

      is it really offensive?

      prole-art-threat @bobbygeorge | 25 Nov '05, 14:32 | X
      • Nope,

I was just messing. I agree with you.

        bobbygeorge @prole-art-threat | 25 Nov '05, 14:35 | X
  • Plenty Prole :-)

I half talk about the Londoncentric thing with my tongue firmly in cheek.

It's the biggest place in the UK! of course most users would be from there, I think it's wonderful that some people not only have a virtual relationship with other board members but something in reality as well.

    tom_from_sparks | 25 Nov '05, 14:32 | X
  • any sense ?

    No !

Did the fact that much things resolve around London annoy me.
    NO !

    lyle | 25 Nov '05, 14:35 | X
  • I'd agree

Until I started posting I felt this place was less London-centric.

    Shit, maybe it's my fault?

    iShotTheDeputy | 25 Nov '05, 14:35 | X
    • yeah

I've felt really bad about it as well recently, obviously the DiS meetups are great but the social board is starting to live up to it's name.

So what's outside of the m25, you say? dragons?

      homesick_alien | 25 Nov '05, 14:35 | X
      • outside of Paris

        there's riots apparently...

        lyle @homesick_alien | 25 Nov '05, 14:38 | X
      • It'd be humourous

if you thought that DiS didn't have that effect on people Prole.

cliquey - yes it has become less inclusive as a site but I suppose people outside of London have found other things to do and other sites they prefer to visit as a result.

Everything is organised through here but London represents the majority of this board and a few posters who used to use it frequently and were non london based have vanished. Nothing to be that guilty about though.

When we get bored of it we can just stop logging in.

        Patricide @homesick_alien | 25 Nov '05, 14:38 | X
        • i hopefully...

one day will make it to a DiS event :'(

          papa_smurf @Patricide | 25 Nov '05, 14:41 | X
        • well I was just trying to address

a reason why the user volume has gone down - its ace meeting everyone I was probably just trying to say something positive or something

          prole-art-threat @Patricide | 25 Nov '05, 14:42 | X
        • t'be fair...

I lurked for a long while when I lived in Cardiff, because

          a) i was scared.
          b) a lot of the events weren't really relevant (because 75% of it is in london) and there was a very similar messageboard which was more relevant for meetups/gigs etc in Cardiff which i used more (and still post on regularly)
c)i didn't have as much free time in work ;)

Fair enough, it might be londoncentric but if more events were organised by people outside the capital then maybe it would become less so. ya need more regional DiS representatives... everyone's being magnetically pulled to lahandahn tahn...

          keveddy @Patricide | 25 Nov '05, 14:45 | X
          • Yes

I regularly greet visitors to london by rubbing an A-Z in their faces, followed by a slap with a jellied eel. LAAHVERLY JAAHBERLY

            homesick_alien @wishpig | 25 Nov '05, 14:57 | X
          • that would be a good idea

and DiS sponsored events - its a good way for the 'site' to 'grow'> i'd support that - it means a weekend away and cheaper beer.

            London is ace though.

            prole-art-threat @keveddy | 25 Nov '05, 14:47 | X
            • catch 22

how do you attract non Londoners to a London centric site? short answer is you can't. The social board has made this site less faceless and people less anonymous to each other. I guess other people have done what you have and found something similar closer to home.

              Patricide @keveddy | 25 Nov '05, 14:48 | X
              • i don't see the problem

with some people speaking a lot of London events.
                There's many other threads...

                lyle @Patricide | 25 Nov '05, 14:51 | X
              • yeah but

its fun meeting people up and down the country innit - well I enjoy it anyway

                prole-art-threat @Patricide | 25 Nov '05, 14:51 | X
                • It costs

too much money to meet people from London and the train journey is the most painful journey I've ever done. There's loads of ace things about the capital though.

                  Wishpig is right too :D

this place is hideously london centric, but as has been pointed out, if so many users come from there, that's inevitable.
I do think it's a little unnecessary to decie online who's coming to what events and so on - surely if you're friends off the internet, you could discuss that sort of thing in private?
