I mentioned this on that film thread, but no one noticed. Has anyone seen this film?
really quite disturbing.
Michael Haneke is a great director.
I was just wondering what peole thought cos I read mixed responses.
It is disturbing, but I found that I only felt disturbed while the plot was unfolding. The ending seemed to intentionally undermine any realism that was previously achieved.
is making a comment on the nature of spectatorship and how the viewer often has a thirst for violence, ie when one of the protagonists gets shot and the other one rewinds the tape (if I memory serves me correctly, it's about 6 years since I've seen it). When the characters talk to the camera and engage with the audience I think it is attempting to implicate the spectator in the violence, thus forcing us to question how we attain pleasure from watching violent movies.
I think. That probably doesn't make sense and it's a while since I've seen the film so I could be wrong.
watched a really disturbing film called Calvaire last night. It was about a guy who gets kidnapped into this weird village and everyone thinks he's a woman and treats him like shit. I didn't like it much.
that's not Tootsie?
Hollywood_freak spent such a lot of time making that film! He'll be gutted.
does this mean DiS is the weird village and we're the weird villagers?
didn't you notice the weird language they were speaking in.
"wut?" "Ho is once I killer a jag?" "zonino!" "-cater"
JAG! mean? I've always wondered.
that they relentlessly plugged on the music board for a while.
they'd say things like "the fantabulous JAG! are releasing they're debut single tomorrow. If you like JAG! everyone come to see us play on thursday. JAG!"
I mean, JINX!
it was the name of some band who advertising themselves on the board ages ago. If I remember correctly.
It makes you question your reason for watching the film throught to the end. After all, the best way to dispense with the feelings of disgust that you experience in watching the horrors depicted would be to rewind it back to the beginning and not watch it. And it only really dawns on you (that you are utterly complicit) as the film concludes.
