Its sad/inevitable innit?
Such a shame. I was watching some footage of him back in the 60s the other day, makes you remember how good he was.
I read this as 'I don't think the Betsey will last the day' and assumed there was some problem with the popular Farringdon venue.
bad time for ex fulham stars. i'd be nervous if i was edwin van der saar.
bastard. I can't believe he's destroyed his second liver when that could have gone to someone deserving. Bastard.
is a very difficult subject though. as someone who has seen it first hand i know that it's not as easy to say "i'm very grateful for this liver hence i will never drink again". addiction is addiction for the simple fact it's so fucking hard to pry yourself away from it.
i hope he makes it. though when the news starts saying he's "fighting for his life" , it usually means he's not got long left.
and it was sadly inevitable that this would happen but I dont think I can hate him - alcoholism destroys more than the person who's drinking it even though it is meant to be cooler than smoking fags- and I understnad what Panic is saying since my old man didnt make it past 38 thanks to booze!
Given Best's history I wonder if he would have been eligable for that liver were he not a football hero?
it on the NHS but I could be wrong seeing he's in a private hospital now - he isn't as rich as we think though
but surely even on the NHS someone has to prioritise these things.
I guess it's a question aside from George himself: Do they have to sit there and say "we've got one liver. This guy's been waiting for ages but this other guy is clearly a reformed sort of character"?
Or is it just everyone equal?
Having done a bit of medical sociology on my course last year, I think one of the measures they use is something called QALY (quality adjusted life years). What this means is that for each patient they get an estimate for the gain in life expectancy if they were to do the transplant, and multiply this by an estimate of the quality of life they would have in that extra time (a number between 0 and 1, 0 being as bad as being dead and 1 being perfect quality of life). So if the patient would get 10 years more with a quality of life of 0.8, that would be 8 QALYs. They then work out the financial cost per QALY and compare the figures for different candidates for the transplant.
Hope that makes sense!
I sat behind George Best (well a few rows behind) when he was coming back from doing some draw somewhere near Cannes and he'd just had an operation but he spent the whole time drinking champagne so realy I have no sympathy for him, never should have given him the liver in the first place, it was obvious he'd fuck it up, it's just because everyone finds themseleves clutching to times when they think things were better and everyone wants to keep them alive so we keep people alive even though they're just reminding us of how the "good times" have gone bad. Or something like that.
is a prize c*nt of titanic proportions. I've had constant first hand experiences of alcoholism and he's a plain fucking twat. And then you get a load of morons spouting cr@p in the papers about how he's the "victim of his disease". Well what about his wife beating, two timing, verbal and emotional abuse to boot?
Don't get me wrong, I don't want the guy to die, but to say he's anything more than a selfish misfit fuckwit is a joke. He can take he's 70s football career and shove it up his self-centred anus the cunt.
And what about those child molestation charges eh? What was that about.
dont go "way-hey am loving every drop of it and drinking like a Fresher on a promise - they drink mostly to either sleep/forget/maintain a level of sanity -most of them are secretive though the signs are always there
and anyway his latest illness has little or nowt to do with his liver so the sanctomonious among us can do one can't they?
no-one said he was Ned Flanders - for all the things that he's done I feel nothing but sadness when you see a man broken by his own folly, a talented man like that - and yes I think his sort of addiction is a hard one to break - god I'm not trying to be a Nuts Editorial - I just think drink is by far one of the msot destructive drugs in modern life and people who get addicted to are by far the most tragic
Alcohol is the biggest killer of all the drugs in this country, I believe.
But it's good to know the Tories still think a bit of coke is the sign of a weak character.
I even saw the Standard had some headline about 'Tory Candidate Gay Slur'. It was 'pleasing' to see that 'gay' is still considered a 'slur' among true-blue circles...
Ah, I suppose, but he's got selfish cunt written all over him. He really his scum.
Dunno why I hate him so much. I think it's becuase everyone else LOVES him.
Everyone's guilty of hating bands or films just because everyone else loves it so much. It's a bit like that. Except Best really is a cunt. MAN I LOVE USING THE C WORD. It makes me feel big. And clever!
plus he's my name sake
I couldn't care either way.
Yes I know its a difficult subject, but I personally have no time for people who abuse the chance they were given, and man was this guy talented.
Also see: Stan Collymore, Mark Bosnich and to some extent Paul Gascoigne.
was as good as Pele, or Cruyff or Maradona. His failures made him what he was, its why Garincha is more popular than the saintly Pele in Brazil, and why any right thinking person prefers Gazza to Gary Walkers Lineker. I hate Man U, but the game when he scored against Benfica in the Big Cup was an amazing performance. One of the all time greats.
He could have been so much better, and could have done so much more.
But he didn't...
I have no respect for him. Simple as that.
erm...Alex Higgins - total tool as a person - total talismanic genius on the table
Spot on man.
