Gonna have to start going here semi-regularly for work. What's good / bad about it?
It's in New Zealand.
Still recovering from the earthquake, so accommodation's expensive. Travel can be a pain because roads are shit/closed.
Nice environment in the city, and if you like the outdoors you're close to skiing, awesome lakes, mountains, all that shit.
Good tech/startup scene - if that's your thing let me know, I know some people.
[Note: being a North Islander I inherently regard the South Island with suspicion and see them as a bunch of thick, inbred racists, so my opinion may not be 100% accurate).
It's a startup I'll be working for. Still in Brisbane but will be going over there every few months.
Very agreeable. Would defo visit again.
The post-earthquake situation and resultant half-the-city-is-gap-sites-with-interesting-temporary-shiz-there-for-time-being vibe gave it a bit of a Berlin-in-the-90s vibe, in my imho.
(So the soulless thing is a slightly odd thing to see said - I thought there seemed to be quite a lot of creative energy there. But I defer to IJ's insider knowledge.)
And I'm judging it on the basis of northern prejudice and hanging out in the suburbs with 40-year-old parents. I did think, looking around the centre, that you could make some great Budapest style ruin bars, but didn't really see any sign of that.
I'm excited for going now!
Report back here to tell us all for it when you've been!
I grew up there, that's all
It's now or never
+ Beautifully situated between the New Forest and Bournemouth Bay
+ Chocolate-box pretty
+ Plenty of decent places to go for dinner
- £££ expensive (because of amount of retirement income that goes into people's homes)
- traffic is a pisser in the summer
- Very little in the way of a live music scene for a conurbation of its size
Then realised I was thinking of Chichester. WHAT AM I LIKE EH?!
+ Harbour Hotel/Marina
- my train was over an hour late arriving last time I was there
As for Christchurch NZ, my ex's uncle runs this place which is properly like one of those super cool video stores from 80s/90s mild teen peril movies and as such worth a visit:
will keep an eye out
my hot take: it is fine.
took the infamous lightsabre pic is from christchurch and as it happens, i am also from christchurch (the one in dorset)
anyway, i'll ask for his thoughts
mid last year
out of a van. Pedro his name is. It's really good.
I went once before the earthquakes and once after so it was really sad to see the state it's in, but also uplifting to see them rebuilding (in the centre at least) The cardboard cathedral and the shopping centre with shops in shipping containers are cool.
Meant for one person.
Couldn't even fit it in the bin in the hotel room.
Had to take it to reception for their bin and pretend like I'd shared it with someone.
You're a wild man, maoam, and no fooling.
thank god I posted this on the old boards otherwise I'd never hear the end of it
