anyone played any games this week?
so i went back to Civilization 5, which is not as good as 4 but a lot better with the expansions than when it came out. anyway
it's got some of the most beautiful graphic design in any game. everything's a bit Art Deco-y, stylised, full of character and looks...friendly and even a tad artistic.
my question is this: what other games have graphic design that you love? not graphics but like, you sometimes find yourself looking at the menu or inventory screen or whatever and thinking "this looks good"
I did use to really like the FFVII start screen.
RDR looks good. not sure about FFVII, the in-game menu screen looks a bit clunky. 7 and 8 have nice start screens though.
i kinda like Banished for how simple and uncomplicated it looks
Great example of a unified aesthetic running through every aspect of the game, from the start menu to the pause screen. Lurid, dreamy, slightly grotesque. Love it.
Such a slick looking game in all departments.
maybe run through all three bioshocks. too many games to play first though.
Loved the Colin McRae Rally 2.0 menu back in the day and the way the words morphed into speakers, spanners, tracks, etc when you selected them:
WipEout, 2097 and 3 were all designed by Designers Anonymous, a famous design house. Also love the overall visceral and audio aesthetic to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Lots of recent mobile games have had a great design to them. Swords & Sorcery and Monument Valley are two obvious ones, but also 80 Days had a great steampunk vibe to the writing and visuals.
in awe of the music. When you click continue, I also recall it took you further into the graphics and showed you a framework outline of your character, which looked cool as.
just by how a character moves or holds themselves, what kind of person they are, that's really strong graphic design. Love seeing that being pulled off. Almost all of the old Lucasart games, TF2 and Darkest Dungeon manage it, off the top of my head.
On the two old kings now, Allant is SO SIMPLE in theory but I get restless and fuck it up. Classic FromSoftware. Really great game.
Also playing some Guacameele with the gf, a lovely little bit of co-op there.
Not long till Bloodborne DLC and Fallout 4. Phwoar!
Also there's a new assassin's creed out apparently
Pre-Ordered Fallout 4, might be my last big boy game :)
Seems wrong to be playing violent games once your milk teeth are back in
There's something compulsive about building bigger and bigger and bigger. Not sure what the end goal/challenge is though, which is a bit hmmm.
totally forgot it was coming out. The last one was so abysmal but there's part of me that really really wants to play AC in London... I've seen no reviews yet though. I think that's out this week and I can ill afford it, especially with Fallout obviously going to be vastly better
but then it always is, isn't it? And then you play it and it's just Assassins Creed again.
Not been any hype at all for it. Either they're doing the old 'no previews so no one can realise it's shit' thing but given the Unity debacle, I can't see them risking that again.
Maybe instead they're not going to hype it and rely on the usual fanbase to go crazy for it, Sony / Microsoft to push it for them over the holidays or just land it with a big BOOM! ITS OUT! AND GETTING 9/10s!
We shall see I guess. Also heard very little about Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider given they're due out soon too.
All the reviews are saying it's not even remotely buggy and really quite good. Not sure what their game is promotion-wise.
I forgot all about RotTT. You'd think since it didn't sell crazy well and is up against some big guns that'd be all over the place now. Though it's just Xbone in Nov isn't it? Maybe they're saving the ad budget for the PS4/PC release in Jan.
Halo 5 however - spent a lot of time watching sports channels lately (my dad was visiting) and that live action ad is all over the place. Relentless.
Fatal Frame demo is out to play today I believe? Very varying reviews from an enthusiastic EDGE 8/10 to Destructoid saying it's the death of the franchise.
Retail copies are so scarce they're predictably selling for loads already on ebay apparently yuggy. Knew I should have got it! It's Xenoblade Chronicles / Metroid Prime Trilogy all over again...
Nintendo do their usual thing of releasing a game trailer, it getting dismissed as shit, not talking about it for ages them reminding you about it days before launch and making you think 'actually, that looks sorta great...?'
Good to see that the Wii U version lets you switch off the more gimmicky features and play a straight game of tennis like in the N64 version. It could really do with bulking up the single player experience though.
I cancelled my Fatal Frame physical pre-order the other night because of the shoddy reviews. I still really like the look of the game though so I might pick up a digital copy at some point - £50 was steep.
Going to play the finale Sunday, replaying this game in one sitting has commented the games place as one of the years best games. The pace, the whit, characters, emotional depth and overall writing is all superb and the opening title sequences of each episode with the licensed music? Always great. The finale is also meant to be amazing.
might watch last week's 'the walking dead' first though. that's probably going to be less traumatic.
Luckily I cant go to prison, just Juvy
How lost would I be if I just jumped in at Episode 1 of this?
That's about it, it's completely character driven so you won't be lost at all.
all you need to know is that Handsome Jack was the antagonist of BL2
Will get involved.
It was the best episode and I think this was certainly the most consistently great telltale game.5th episode is an emotional rollercoaster with striking visuals and wraps all lose ends incredibly well. Incredibly satisfying season
that was a real humdinger! i even cried real tears!
awesome series. hooray!
i bought this for laughs not for FEELS.
Plenty of tearjerker moments in this one... often followed by bouts of laughter. Trying not to spoil but the tear joke between rhys and Sasha pretty much sumed ups why I loved this series so much. Also dat battle sequence was amazing
sounds like I'm actually going to have to get this.
knackered vanquish last night and this seems like the logical next step from that. Must have ploughed 50 hours into disgaea 2's item world just pissing about. Expect this will be very much more of the same.
Finding that the witcher 3's story elements are a lot of fetch quests - go talk to someone, go investigate something - if it wasn't such a brilliant game I think I'd be growing tired with it in the near future. Don't think i will though, its just such a brilliant game.
i spent ages on 1 and 2 back in the day and 3 on the Vita. haven't got round to getting the more recent ones, but only a matter of time methinks.
I have 400-450 to spend (450 being the very upper limit)
I'm not expecting to be able to play anything new or anything that needs super high specs, but games from 12-24 months ago should be playable, right?
What should I get?
you would need to buy an old model of laptop from previous years. Integrated graphics cards are much better than they used to be though, so depending on what you want to play they may suffice. Can you give an example of the types of games you are interested in?
And civ 4 or 5 spring to mind
Civ 4 and 5 should be fine with current integrated graphics cards, although not on the highest settings of course. Cities Skylines would really need at least a low end dedicated graphics card to get a decent performance.
This laptop should be able to meet your requirements for £429.99: http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/lenovo/z-series/z50-amd/?sb=:000001D4:00046E57:#
The main weaknesses of the laptop is the 'spongy' keyboard, and the limited brightness/contrast on the screen (which is Full HD though).
holding off on starting a master league until they sort the transfers out, due next week i believe, so til then i'm myClubbing. in that annoying place where Professional difficulty is too easy, but Top Player is too hard (against good sides at least). keep losing 3-2 in the VS CPU competition finals :(
Messy but stylish. It's no Killer7 mind.
Better this time too, harder diff level, bombs/alchemy build.
Doing missions I ignored, reading the books.
Just reckon that's my lot now. Really not sure I can justify that Ps4 purchase given in the past month I've had the chance to play on the Wii U for about 5 hours, and most of that was off play use too.
BUT I was mourning not having a Zelda game to play and not really clicking with Mario Maker, so I got Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Good eh? Like, really good? All the gadgets and traits of OoT are there, yet in a 2D form, much like Super Metroid had that same atmosphere of Prime. Must have been insanely revolutionary in the day; I was off playing Sonic and Streets of Rage which, whilst a load of fun, had none of this depth.
Struggled a bit to know where to go once I did the first temple and had to resort after wasting an hour dying in various places I knew I shouldn't be in. Looked up a guide and realised I should have just gone next door. But anyway, liked what I've played so far immensely.
My dad borrowed it off his mate a short while after it came out and we played through it together. The guy had been playing it with his son and as I recall on the end sequence it shows you how many times you saved and died, which set up a tensely fought father/son Zelda contest. It's a weirdly competitive way to play it but they're some of the happiest memories of growing up.
Needless to say we toasted those twats. EAT IT, PEOPLE I'VE FORGOTTEN THE NAMES OF.
Try and play Link's Awakening. Very similar styles and a truly amazing game.
Have decided against buying a PS4 this week for exactly the same reasons. Can't justify it as I don't have the time and I have an under-utilised WiiU at home - where is bloody ZELDA ffs!
Going through FFVII for the first time on my PS3, will keep me occupied for months and then going to get The Last Of Us for my PS3. With whatever happens with the Wii U (still haven't got SM3DW, Zelda, starfox) that'll be at least a years worth of gaming for me. *Might* then get a PS4.
Obviously if they announce a date for Mass Effect 4 this'll probably go out the window.
it warms my heart when people play old games for the first time and don't write them off because of graphics.
Cloud's in the middle of reminiscing about how hardcore Sephiroth was, bad things are obviously on the horizon in this story.
140 health points back in the day, glad we get to him with a bit more than that...
I remember waking up terrified because I'd seen his driver's license in a dream.
It was the heartbeats, and some of his musical themes... and his brutal actions in the ShinRa building. Oh man, I'm getting nostalgic over FF7 again. I am quite looking forward to that new reimagined / remake or whatever it is, I have to say.
The first Zelda I played. As Fints says below Link's Awakening is very good too.
There was also some other GBA one that was similar, I think you could shrink in it. Can't remember the name now.
I know they re-packaged links awakening with an extra dungeon, might be that?
Now if you'll excuse me I've got to find some secret seashells for Richard.
I never completed it, really want to go back to it now!
The two Zelda games Capcom did for the original Gameboy, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, are also supposed to be good.
One is definitely better than the other (Ages > Seasons from memory), but they're both decent little titles. They link together, so you don't actually get to fight Ganon unless you've completed one and put a code into the other, that unlocks the final boss.
There was originally supposed to be a third one in the series (each linking to one piece of the Triforce), but it got canned as the linking was proving to complicated.
I prefer Link's Awakening. Might be because it was the first one I ever played, but it really is a true classic even so.
Also love the accidental innuendo in the introduction that suggests Link's been wanking in bed while Marin watched.
Not sure how I'd feel about playing it for the first time nowadays...properly a game you could get lost in as a kid, when you're limited to playing in bursts you could end up powergaming it a bit too much.
How far in are you? Genuinely gets better and better as you go through.
Got the first pendant and the thing I'd managed to miss entirely was the chat I needed to have which acquired the Pegasus boots. Just got those, so guessing that watery area to the East is now going to be accessible unlike before...
Then do listen to this. It's great, as I say most weeks:
I'm seriously considering getting a pre-owned Xbox One in a couple of months for Halo 5, Ori, Rare Replay and Forza Horizon 2. Plus I want my own next-gen system next year for FFXV and Kingdom Hearts 3.
Housemate has a PS4 under our TV and it's essentially just become a Nidhogg machine and a DVD player. He plays The Witcher, mind. I won't miss out on Uncharted 4 either which is nice.
Jet Force Gemini is a lot more unplayable than I remembered, but I've been having a lot of fun on Conker's Bad Fur Day so far, can't believe I owned this game when I was 12. Also forgot how much time you waste just falling off shit in platformers and having to start all over again.
Knight Lore and Killer Instinct? Together at last!
Jet Force Gemini! Loved that game
what's a good short-ish cheapish game i could buy and complete by sunday night?
something actiony/fpsy maybe, PC please (haven't played any new releases in about 6 months+)
Heard decent things about both.
During the early hours this morning. Heavy stuff. Quite easily my game of the year thus far. Puts all David cage games to shame in terms of drama and characterisation. Modern cult classic.
looked pretty good, might give it a go one of these days
surprised by how much I grew to love it: I disliked episode 1 quite a bit (except for the last third or so, after leaving the campus, which set the foundations the later ones improved upon).
Really liked how it worked the "real-life" stuff with the science-fiction stuff; as a few reviews pointed out, they didn't mess it up by coming up with a big explanation of her abilities and stuff. As flawed as the entire five-part game was* (and these flaws became a part of its charm, in a way, the more I played): I really liked how intelligently it dealt with its themes, without being too on-the-nose about it.
Particularly liked the evocation of nostalgia throughout, and then dedicating this final episode to anxiety on how the future is going to turn out, how little control you personally may have, and how you can choose to let go of nostalgia or become obsessive about an idyllic past while the present falls apart around you. A few people seem to have disliked the ending, which I totally disagree with -- I almost saw the whole game as Max reacting to Chloe's sudden death in that bathroom, regretting not having spent that time with her and thinking about what could've been, and then having that dream world fall apart around her or whatever.
Really good game, I look forward to the (presumably True Detective / Fargo-style) future seasons, and am confident in their ability to tell thematically interesting stories and that.
* e.g. "Warren, I should've told you earlier but I can travel back in time and into alternate universes" "Oh right, you must've had a busy week by the way here's my lengthy assumption as to what is happening, also you are well fit"
Spent some time exploring the new area of the map and liberating villages which were overrun with monsters and made some in-roads on the main quest.
Still yearning for the combat to be Bloodborne, but enjoying the open world exploration again and glad I got back into it. Whetting my appetite for Fallout 4.
Nintendo wanted to take the killing out of Goldeneye
Mostly for the night map, which is awesome and all the drama. Basically turned BF4 into a horror game.
for good tablet games I'd be grateful.
This War Of Mine
And Beyond Good And Evil 'Wyld' looks bloody great
Beyond Good And Evil 2 or GTFO
And unleash giant serpent ladies whilst riding a bear
via Steam (laptop). It's a great, GREAT game, really makes you think plus it feels so oppressive. I'm finding getting used to the keyboard / mouse a little difficult though, any tips for controls? Other than that it's pretty much a masterpiece whereby 'dated' graphics do not matter at all.
It's weird in contrast, more accurate shooting but harder to physically move. I should look at syncing my PS3 pad somehow with my Mac.
This outweighs any loss in precision when it comes to aiming.
The original was great - confined space, cool escalation of weapons/enemies so you're never sure if you're a sitting duck or a bad ass, sort of free roaming but actually with a fairly tight narrative structure that made sense. The second one was just a big mess that made no sense #justsayin
Felt revolutionary and incredibly atmospheric at the time. I loved how every chapter had a gameplay theme as well as a setting theme, explored each, then moved on. Some bits were definitely stronger than others, parts of it are blatantly there for PHYSICS which look very dated now, and the whole thing's essentially a corridor. But that's from the perspective of what, fifteen years later? Not as good as the original but a very fine game.
Didn't warm to it at the time and have revisited it a couple of times since and never felt interested enough to play it all the way through. Felt like a lot of wandering round open spaces trying to remember why you're there in the first place, waiting for the next set piece. I guess I always expected the plotting to be as neat as in the first one - it has some nice little moments, but I never felt absorbed by the gameworld.
so FPS are a thing of the past.
looks interesting. Kind of pre-history setting involving summoning animals and gods. Looks like my kind of thing.
Been playing mobile games lately - Monument Valley is a nice, Journey lite type puzzle, and the Lara Croft/Hitman Go games are well worth checking out whether or not you like the series that they're based on.
Been looking at getting a cheap Kindle tablet just to play stuff like the Telltale titles on (think all first episodes of the Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us and GOT are free) - anyone have any thoughts on what the cheapo Kindle tablet is like and if the games will run ok on it?
Do some Googling, if so, I'd recommend it. Only downside is the battery life, you can't complain for less than 100 quid though.
They can handle demanding games at a respectable framerate, in part due to the relatively low resolution of the screen which means that the graphics don't look as detailed as with more expensive tablets. Outside of gaming, the general performance when navigating the OS is on the sluggish side at times, which may be a result of Amazon putting their own Fire OS on top of the Android OS (turning it into an Amazon store front).
As a very cheap means of playing games on a tablet it gets the job done, so if you are on a tight budget it isn't a bad choice. The Tesco Hudl 2 would be well worth the extra cost if your budget can stretch that far, and for its quality it represented probably the best value for money. However, it has just been discontinued and there are no plans for a successor. You would need to check if any of your local stores have any left in stock and do so quickly.
Episode 1 and 2 were great just finished 3 which was wasnt as good.
Going to play New Vegas this afternoon to build up the hype
That was a lot of fun, last episode especially.
Might try The wolf amongst us, any good?
but I had a good time with Wolf Amongst Us. Well put together.
they've released a trailer that looks the same as the other trailers
properly gothic stuff, wonderful.
This game is too fucking big. Dunno if anyone's made that observation yet.
Think I said this at the time, but I felt real empathy for the werewolf
Think I made the right decision by lifting the curse, then immediately killing him.
Oh god I love you The Witcher but, damn, I don't think I'll finish you by the time I'm 60.
It's really very trashy buy enjoyable.
Finished Valiant Hearts - what an ending. Christ.
Dark Souls 2 - still stuck
Most of your RPG crazies won't bother with starting a 100 hour game.
Oh god, I haven't even finished The Witcher yet. *leaning tower of shame*
Not got a fighting game on ps4 so a bit tempted
2k15 was pretty rough, though apparently 2k16 plays like a completed version of 2k15 which had many features gutted out of it and a half arsed career mode.
So my plan to get an Xbox one an halo 5 today are thwarted! Boo! Oh well, I'm replaying resi code Veronica on dreamcast and its rad! If anybody has a DC I highly recommend getting an official RGB cable off eBay, it makes the system look amazing on an hdtv in 4:3 mode.
Gonna be ok?
in the small hours of Tuesday morning.
Well, I mean I still have plenty to do but I've beaten Nashandra and ascended to my throne. Sorted out Vendrick last night and ran around mopping up some items. Still have things like Grandahl's quest to do and all the dlc.
Then I found Demons Souls half price in the PSN Halloween sale so I immediately bought it.
It's easily the best bit of the whole game. Also FUCKING SOLID. I found a really easy way to farm human effigies last night. Yeeaahh
