Am I wrong or did everyone have this game. Chumbawamba exists because of this game. I miss nintendo.
Huge leap forward in football gaming
If I remember correctly the trialled a few features that weren't in the standard Fifa games either side if it
I actually got off with a booking once
I would just rage foul the keeper till the game was called off. The digital equivalent of flipping the board.
faces? They were pixels. But it was amazing.
Esp in the ps1 era
maybe that was '97
that pressing the dive button when you got slide tackled on the hardest setting won you an instant free kick/pen.
(This excludes football management simulations obviously)
Had it on PC and used to play using a keyboard which seems mental now. Got so good at it that I had a self-imposed rule that I was only allowed to score if it was a bicycle kick after a rainbow flick.
Used to spend hours rinsing it with my brothers. Remember when you unlocked the classic mode and could play ye olde football with a leather ball? WE'LL BE SINGING. WHEN WE'RE WINNING.
It does mean I struggle to adapt to new games though, I was at a party and someone asked if I wanted to play Fifa (with a wager of a quid a goal), and I agreed, then asked "It's still triangle to sprint, right?", and when he said no I backed out.
Should I get it
that was a terrible challenge'.*
*Think this was FIFA '99, was definitely Lawro's stupid voice.
Best game ever.
indoor 5-a-side mode? That was good.
I had a failsafe method of scoring from acute angles when positioned between the box and the touchline. I loved that game so much.
Accidentally unlocked a mode once that made every player have full stats. I've never remembered how to do it since.
same to the Song 2 query above
My greatest memory of this was the net bulge animation. Never before were we spoiled with such luxury.
Used to find an excuse to wander to Argos just to try it out.
but were FIFA 98 and FIFA Road to the World Cup 98 the same game?
I had the road to the world cup game and it had Beckham on the cover, Song 2 was on the soundtrack and it had an indoor 5-a-side mode.
Just so we're clear
but RTWC had that 'hot potato' mode where your team all fell over if they kept possession for more than 10 seconds or something.
(the best ever football game cheat code thing was of course this: https://youtu.be/8KyKz7WnTQ4?t=127)
I'm sure I remember reading a Playstation magazine and there was a cheat to unlock an all star team
did this exist
If you timed a slide tackle on the keeper to perfection, you’d be able to nick the ball off the keeper and tap it in. Of course 99% of the time you’d get a straight red, but on the rare occasions it worked…..perfect.
The stadium intros before the game were great too. As was the Blur intro video, mixed in with Motty going "absolutely brilliant finishing there." Best game ever for so many reasons.
got about 30 sendings off trying to replicate it.
think it was the first properly good 3D football game i played (no, Actua Soccer and Adidas Power Soccer were not, in retrospect, good). probably kind of mindblowing in how much you could do. also in what kind of feats of dubious boasting it inspired in schoolmates. one guy kept telling us he'd won the world cup four times with Pakistan on the hardest setting. woteva m8
it did so many things much better than the FIFA games... unfortunately it was seriously lacking in game modes and suffered frame-rate drops occasionally.
I don't even know who Alexi Lalas is.
to RTTWC and 98 was huge. They were the first barely playable FIFA games.
Still not managed to come close to SWOS though.
Only nostalgia says otherwise.
Played a fair bit of FIFA, PES and SWOS recently. It's still the most fun game of them all, and is still the one that best captures the spirit of the game, even if it's the least realistic.
is there even separate FIFA 98 and RTWC versions?
RTTWC was FIFA 98, with FIFA 99 following afterwards.
There were separate 'World Cup' games.
