That's a damning spike by anyone's standards, what's going on?
would be my best guess.
we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the media and the government seem to be happy to make Islam the new vague enemy like communism was in the 80s. People will be ignorant fucks but it's a lot easier when your own state is quietly condoning your actions.
Although both figures cited in both studies appear to suggest such crimes are still relatively small in terms of the overall population. Whilst this provides a bit of relief - any increase is really quite worrying.
Surely the rhetoric hasn't stepped up THAT much since last year.
Usually chalk it up to increased inequality, which I basically blame for everything, but even that wouldn't be too pronounced from 2013/14. Freaking me out.
I wonder how much social media (twitter in particular) has contributed to the increase? There is so much hatespeak on there it's unreal.
that Twitter is a left wing echo chamber. Pretty sure Twitter is an echo chamber for all sorts of types, from Corbyn fans through to the EDL.
I think it seems more of an `echo chamber` for lefty types given that left wing views seem to be less represented in mainstream media, hence fervour to have a louder voice on twitter etc.
But yes of course they become an echo chamber for all sorts of things because you self-select what voices you want to hear! And most people will inherently only follow people whose views they like/agree with. It's a platform thing; not a specific political thing.
If you follow certain people it's a gateway to all sorts of EDL shit. I work with a guy like this.
from a fucking nutjob on twitter. On both the left and right.
as people say things on social media that they wouldn't be held to account for off it.
doesn't explain this specific rise though obviously.
