New Re: Your_milshake - Dexter is dead thread
From TheoGBDecember 19, 2011 15:21
Hmm, deleted. To be honest I had no idea what that could be referring to and just assumed it was some in-joke thread for the 18 year olds.
Not sure who Your_MILKSHAKE is. He does smell of troll a bit.
You old bastards.
It was Teej and I realising that we both know his best friend's girlfriend. Which has just reminded me that I think said best friend works at the same place I'm moving to in a few weeks.
Life is creepy.
said friend also just got engaged with my friend, so that's nice.
Congratulations to both!
I'll be sure to creep him out with that fact when we start working together soon.
(I won't really. I'm not even sure it's him, I'm basing this off a persistent LinkedIn suggestion that I've not even investigated)

Is that ticket still available by any chance?
I'm following a couple of tickets on ebay etc, but happy to/would prefer to get it from you if it's still going.
I'll try and contribute to the thread at some point if I can but I have to be brief because it's late and I have to get up early tomorrow.
I meant positivism in the Comtean sense - the idea of some kind of inexorable progressive march to utopia via an increasingly perfect scientific understanding of the world.
In the hands of Dawkins and his ilk, this becomes a form of extreme laissez-faire scientism whereby the free flow of 'value-free' scientific knowledge is in some way supposed to
a.) produce an ever more perfect understanding of the world, as if somehow scientific propositions have some kind of increasingly direct correspondence to 'reality', and
b.) produce a series of scientific discoveries and innovations that transform the lives of the general population for the better.
I think you can draw a direct analogy with neo-liberal economics - it's a kind of 'deregulation' of knowledge qua ethics. The traditional reliance on the potential falsifiability of any scientific proposition becomes an alibi for total epistemological and ethical anarchy. Dawkins totally fails to understand how western science is in the first instance totally based on certain propositions and persuasions drawn from Christianity itself, and in the second, totally, inextricably linked to political and corporate interests.
Sorry if you're not familiar with the philosophy of science - I can try and explain that better later if it makes no sense whatsoever! Ultimately what I was trying to say is that 'Dawkinsian' atheism rests on a total fantasy about science as some kind of isolated, depoliticised space that can replace religion and the ethics that go hand in hand with it. In this respect he couldn't really be more wrong if he tried.
I didn't reply as every time I tried to my brain just exploded, sorry ex-DiSer :(
the spelling and grammar is too good
