all good resaerch
'kin 'ell, budgie
one up first. but then that might be more a reflection of how little opportunity there is for work around here atm.
Presuming you still have to pay rent/ mortgage and still want to eat, then I'd say if you trim your food/ drink/ cinema/ going out expenditure ion half, then that means your outgoings will be 2/3 what they normally are.
If I wanted to be able to take 6 months off then (2/3 x my annual salary)/ 2.
So may variables in bere though, such as finance commitments for your many pieces of electronic equipment bought on credit (saeftywinl).
But srsly, even if you're in a position to cancel your expensive sky package and gym, cancel all holidays/ meals out etc, you might find there are other things you can't get out of (car payments, childcare, ££ family weddings etc. grown up scary stuff.)
The ideal cautious scenario for a couple is to live your life only needing to get by on one of your salaries, so that if the shit hits the fan, together you can cover the bases until you can find another job. that's not always possible of course.
And how much it's going to cost to move on to the next thing you want to do... training/qualifications/equipment et cetera.
If I just got so fed up of my current job I decided to leave now but with the intention of doing something similar in the same place, then probably about £6k to cover me for 5/6 months (assuming the worst, as I'd probably be employed way quicker than that).
with 2k - looking back that was extremely sensible and worked out fine so I'd say: 2k
Have approximately nothing saved
found a job a week after LUCKILY
unless I get sacked :(
could you conceivably end up with more money from 6 x half_wage than 3 x full_wage?
and then a month.
You're so money, budgie, and you don't even know it.
Anything over about £3k and you'll be comfortable for the duration, probably. Good excuse for a bit of a wander, or a long lay down or something.
If you don't have that sort of money do it anyway, it'll motivate you into doing something and you'd be surprised how little you could live off anyhow.
Mortgage company affords me a payment holiday of up to three months. Very tempted to invoke this, even for frivolous holidays and that. Best left to catastrophe though.
I am a risk-averse WIMP, however. I need thousands and thousands to feel alright with it all, probably 5k.
