Homerton, about half a mile from Clapton.
Not least because the beer's pretty fucking expensive seeing as they brew it on site. Pisses me off that.
King William IV, Leyton. Brodies all brewed on site, all £2.60 a pint. Better beer than Hackney Brewery too IMHO.
wildly varying quality of beer. some is very good, some is that 'peppermint lager' they did on pump for a while
it's generally quite an odd place, mix of folk who seem like they've drunk there for years and years, a few beer-chasing hipsters, and a few middle-class class tourists
quite like it, but never got the fetishisation some have for it.
I've seen openly racist abuse too - condoned by the guy behind the bar as well.
and the guy behind the bar basically saying that our objections were ruining the atmosphere.
And it's got a pretty mixed clientele so... surprises me.
Will keep an eye out from now on whilst I'm in there.
happen to him too.
that some of his mates found the England flags in the window unwelcoming/intimidating once for sure (not sure if anything more had happened than that).
the more I think about it.
into a couple of shouts from some old guys at the bar, and then a polite request to cool it was met with the guy behind the bar telling us to not abuse his regulars, and that the pub was fine before we went in.
It’s my favourite Leyton pub for sure mind. Friendly people, cracking beer, low prices, live sport. Winner.
And maybe even the Birkbeck.
Avoid the Heathcote - the manager doesn't know what she's doing and is being used by the freeholder as a stop-gap to redeveloping it into flats.
Beer selection can be a bit hit and miss mind.
Not fancied the Northcote myself, but they do show sport I think and now the King Harold's shut it might be worth a punt.
Not a huge fan of the Leyton Tech but it's perfectly fine if you have a taste for a craft jobbie.
It's got a newish manager and is terrific now. They're really making it into a key part of the community there.
Walked past it just after it got done up. Looked ok. Didn't see a reason to go there over the Birkbeck/Tech/William IV mind.
They're the 2 best.
Princess of Wales up on the canal's decent too.
Biddle Bros is still reliably raucous.
But I don’t get the dislike myself. Staff are lovely. Best range of beers for any Antic pub I can think of. Place is massive with plenty of seats. Decent garden. Full of idiots but… it’s in Clapton, all of the pubs are.
Top drawer boozer for me.
But too expensive.
And way less full o pricks
Everything in the Billet is over £4. Last time I went in there it was mostly Redemption too which I'm not a huge fan of.
*Might* be full o pricks.
Crooked Billet used to be good but now isn't. Clapton Hart is full of belms.
I like the Royal Sovereign as well.
