or have i mis-remembered something?
do people know this?
but he would do
Well, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, but still. Uber I can understand, but loads of random things were sending me emails with tube-related subject lines.
after people took MLK day to ridiculous extents. Pride here was pretty daft too, but I don't know if this is an embarassing thing companies are doing due to the newness of social media that they might back off on a bit, or just the new normal.
They're just the 21st century equivalent of local radio DJs trying to kill 15 minutes a day by reading from a big On This Day In History book. #partridge
for the social board?
Is that what you mean?
and if there's one thing this board needs it's more Blade Runner chat!
a superior at the Florida part put him on routes away from the customers? Then when Mr Singh raised this issue, via a letter, it obviously went via higher-ups at Disney and they of course said "What the heck, this is silly, lets change this." So they did.
So this isn't really an issue with Uncle Disney, is it? It's an issue with some dickhead manager at the Florida park?
didn't read the article.
don't give me fewer reasons to hate Disney, please.
Gurjot Kaur, a lawyer acting for the Sikh Coalition, said that her client first applied for a job at Disney in 2005, and was told he would have to work in the back, cleaning the car park or in the kitchen.
"The interviewer indicated that he could not work in front of guests because of his turban and beard," his lawyers said.
Mr Singh didn't take up the position, but applied again in 2008, initially to work as a doorman.
Despite extensive experience in hospitality, Ms Kaur says her client was denied the position "because his 'costume' did not match the 'costume' necessary," - Singh took "costume" to mean his turban and beard.
(Sorry, I read the article)
near the Aladdin attraction. Missed a trick really.
think i may have simplified the issue. makes me wonder how many people - beside his manager - were aware of the reasons for his not being employed in the public area
but Walt Disney
My sister's been working at Disney World Florida since last July, on a 12 month placement thing.
Her contract was due to end today. But on Monday, with no warning and very little explanation, they fired her.
OK, she thought, I'll just hang around until Friday. Flying home then anyway.
But then Disney PHONED IMMIGRATION, and my sister got A THREATENING CALL FROM US IMMIGRATION ORDERING HER TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.
Even though she was due to leave a mere FOUR DAYS LATER, she had to borrow over $900 to get an earlier flight, or risk jail, deportation, and a criminal record.
Yeah, fuck Disney.
can you take that to the meeja? they'd bloody love that.
she got caught in flagrante with Goofy while dressed as Elsa from Frozen.
1 sided stories are king. Water-skiing is also king.
I'll find out tomorrow.
But if I know her, it'll be something to do with punctuality, and to fire her on these grounds after 12 months, and four days away from the end of her contract, is unforgivable.
other than being late all the time!
And the way a full year of loyal service can apparently be dismissed without a second thought.
It's just...not on.
I hope I don't find out tomorrow that she punched a child in the face.
we can revisit all this in the 'my sister punched a small child in the face' thread tomorrow
Over the course of her 12 month contract, her supervisor was supposed to have quarterly review meetings with her.
Her supervisor forgot to do this. So to avoid all the paperwork/hot water, she instead decided to fire her, on a pissy technicality, before calling immigration.
And, as I suspected, the pissy technicality was related to her punctuality. She was five minutes late for one of her final shifts, which was precisely the pretext her supervisor needed to fire and deport her.
So, yes, fuck Disney.
I realise you've all probably stopped caring about this by now, but you never know, do you?
I'd imagine that sort of thing happens all the time.
Does sound like a shitty deal for your sister though :/
It's a bit much if we're letting companies off because the law allows them to be dicks. There's a certain amount of decency you would hope to see from an employer.
just because the law allows you to be a dick, doesn't mean you should be a dick.
Fuck Disney, and fuck American law for being so weak at protecting employees.
legally they can Do Wot They Want, sadly.
might get some decent shame out of it, tho.
A friend of mine worked somewhere in London where they routinely fired the lower level admin people after 11.5 months of service because it's easy to fill that role with someone else and you don't get any messy requirements as an employer.
she started pushing little kids over while shouting "what are you gonna do? fire me?!!! my contract ends in 4 days!" they thought she'd tire herself out after flooring 2 dozen but she just wouldnt stop
I quite like Disney.
call it 'The Disney Ones' and sell it to Balonz.
Actually, that would be a colossal waste of your time. I'll think up of a new plan and let you know shortly.
