but then had to go to the bank. was it caught pretty quickly?
for being a triggering nightmare.
I wouldn't have banned him, but then I know him so it wasn't as horrific to me.
"It wouldn't have happened in Electronics Boutique" was a good one so disappointed to see it nuked
and definitely looked deliberate, but also could have been worse.
then went to the bank. I DEMAND AN INQUEST.
is a decent place to live (despite having never been there)
countzero posted a thread about rape in computer games with a deliberately edgy thread title. everyone agreed it was stupid. it got deleted.
is that sean asked me to start this thread to stoke up some beeves
i retroactively disagree
I suppose countzero didn't agree either so not everyone agreed it was stupid
Maybe a we bit hysterical in my (over) reaction, I just found it upsetting and god knows how awful it.would be for somebody who had been a victim of rape crime to read.
I wouldn't want cz to get into any trouble- one of those situations where it's best to nuke the thread and pretend it didn't happen. I apologise for being melodramatic about it, it just gave me a really visceral reaction, if that makes sense.
so I wouldn't feel bad about having a visceral reaction as a result.
Not saying that cz needed anything more than being told it was a silly thing to post that way though.
In case people think he has
he thinks he has, so...
I got one message from parsefone to redo the thingy. but couldn't log in except on my phone
But yes, you're right, it's hard to start a thread like that without a triggering title.
I guess you have to say "something horrible happened to me in the DayZ game"?
Probably it helps if you don't keep being fairly flippant about rape stuff in-thread too, hey?
It was all phrased flippantly.
Or something like that.
not just the title.
I get that. As far as the title is concerned it's exactly what happened and if you google the title it has happened to many others male/pro-gamers/feminist gamers and they've used the same title without any accusations of trying to get a rise.
So as far as the title goes I have issue with it being deleted. Of course users can react as they see fit but deletion was a bit of a blunt instrument when nowhere else online has a title like this attracted anyway near the same reaction.
The only problematic aspects I saw in my post now was the GTA comment (which is a tired old joke used everywhere sans controversy) and my reply yo another commentator who asked if my character was drunk. I assumed this was an ironic statement referencing the "she was asking for it" attitude. I replied with "nah i was fully dressed too" or referencing the same attitude. Apparently the original comment didn't cause offense but my reply in the same spirit did. Sorry for the misunderstanding there.
because there was no consideration taken for the fact that anyone looking at the homepage would see that, and could very reasonably be upset or triggered by it.
is that the other forums where that was posted are probably less progressive than (amazingly) this place has become in the last few years.
We are actually better than we used to be, I reckon.
Five years ago you'd have got no shit at all for that thread on here. Maybe even three years ago, tbh.
the same kind of titles, albeit maybe with a trigger warning (which of course uses the same word)
but yeah it's good that DiS has improved in that regard (probably just because nobody really posts here any more tho ha)
but not individual blogs and discussion therein.
Home of progressive, social justice warriors everywhere!
TBF everyone was likely just glad it wasn't another thread comparing Ellen to Hitler.
I meant I conceded to your point; redit and steam forum aren't the most progressive.
But you can't apply your argument to the femninist gamer blogs discussing this
and pretty sure they wouldn't be phrased the same way.
Fair about the feminist gamer blogs but, again, I'd just cite that all communities online are pretty different. Really, I come back to my theory that you'd have been fine with that thread five years back on here.
in the title that was the problem?
down there, one of many
and the context as well. Even though when it continued and it turned out it was literal, it's commonly used flippantly by people to equate to being beaten in a game etc as well, which made it seem like it was going to be used that way, so already it's eliciting a negative response.
Putting a trigger warning, or hinting that it was horrendous/body contained violence would have also been a more sensitive way of putting it.
Can't really believe we're having to explain why putting the word 'rape' in a title with very little other context can be triggering or upsetting to some people.
What's the point in zapping a thread and then rehashing it in nitpicking fashion.
make better choices in the future?
others views and perhaps become more informed?
That seems a good enough reason to me.
I can see where PO's coming from, as it seems quite often we go over these things, and quite often it's a split of preaching to the choir and talking to a brick wall.
(Not intended as a criticism of anyone in this case)
but he rose to some really stupid bantz in it that pushed it over. As I've said to him he's welcome to do the thread over if he's interested in debating the issue, just phrase and discuss it more sensitively.
Wanted to swear at him some more
Was thoroughly enjoying that public pants-pissing, someone else must have done it
but for the best.
i saw the original post still-here made and thought it was phrased a bit dodgily but also that he kind of qualified it in the same post. what happened after that?
whole blocks of posts would be getting deleted
rather than accept he'd worded it really badly.
