Hope they do VI next.
But this would clearly be immense.
Just on PS4 first. In like 2+ years, as they have just started work on the actual game this week.
Will upset fanboys if it's anything but exactly the same with good graphics.
They'll have to do something pretty special to improve on it.
Plenty of people will get it - I imagine it will be exactly the same with good graphics (though I bet they lose the occasional engrish, damn them)
Or the problematic ooooh gay people in a bath bit
So many questions
They might go down the route of voice acting given that they sort of already have a cast from Advent Children?
is to copy the Monkey Island model and ship with both classic and remastered modes.
Link me to good deals plz
Can I just play it online or something?
There must be a knock off iPhone version or something.
I doubt it.
If you has a PlayStation in the 90s/early 2000s how ON EARTH did you miss FFVII?
I was just never into gaming as anything other than a fun, multiplayer activity. Played a lot of Tekken, Fifa and Tony Hawks with my brothers and mates, a lot of GTA3 and Vice City. Wasn't really into single person, long, dramatic games though - always found them weirdly stressful and didn't enjoy them, especially since I'm just quite shit at games so they don't really seem like good value. Sucked at Tomb Raider II and Hitman before realising that. I liked watching my mate play MGS though, he was well good.
I think I sat with someone playing FFVII once, I suppose I just didn't get it at the time. I played Pokemon on the Gameboy though. Same sort of thing?
Waaaaay bigger and more involved and bettttter than Pokemon. Not a million miles removed (I guess same RPG principles) but totally different.
Fucking hell it is amazing, easily the best game of all time.
I lol'd at how fucking po-faced all the tedious dialogue was and then there was combat and it all went a bit *huh*? And then I went home and played Half-Life and reminded myself what a proper fucking game was like.
happy for everyone who's very excited about this but i could never understand how people play Final Fantasy (see also: Baldurs Gate, Skyrim and all that 'walking around' stuff)
Totally different game to BG, Skyrim etc.
but was different in style.
+ FFVII, might hook it out sometime this week. Bet it will look awful on my massive telly.
didnt look bad, like SNES games look REALLY bad
Have replayed all of the PS1 FFs on a pretty new Sony TV and they all look good.
Also FFX HD Remaster looks nice for a quick lick of paint job.
Will buy a PS4 for this
And Alexander will probably be easier to find.
Uuugh, and they might have voice acting in it. Shiiiiit.
Advent Children voice acting was pretty good from what I remember
Imagining some of the dialogue in FFVII in that style is immediately grating.
FFX was jarring at times but they have got a lot better since then despite the plots of the games falling off a cliff.
I obviously mean voice acting, FFX was great in many regards and way better than anything since.
Literally took the DVD out at the end and put it in the fucking bin
My expectations are already totally out of control, definitely setting myself up for a fall.
almost certain the music will be redone
I guess they will redo it all, the original music is a long way off what they do at the moment in terms of sound.
which doesnt have to be bad. actual guitars on the boss theme wouldn't go amiss
This was on at the Royal Albert Hall last year:
as long as they don't fuck the characters/plot up or the music, and basically make the gameplay look like the cut scenes from teh original but better, then they can do a load of stuff that'd be cool. the sections where you're just running around a picture of a background getting stuck on poorly designed bits of scenery can be actually good. subgames could be incredible. hope it doesnt go too GRITTY REBOOT and lose the wonder of the countryside bits
What if they get rid of the world map!? so nervous
it's all about Shenmue III for fucks sake.
at least if this is successful and not completely awful it might turn FF back from the darkside
To be honest I would be happy if they stopped making new games and just started at FF1 remaking all the ones with good plots until they get to FFX then starting again.
If this remake is good I will be so happy.
I liked having Red and Barrett
Later on Cid sometimes, but not often.
Tifa when I had to and Cid sometimes
when i replayed it last month, the bit with Red seeing his dad on the mountain was one of the most affecting bits
Yuffie was a fixture for me.
Never had a single playthrough where I've used him at a time you weren't forced to.
last time it was TWATTTTTT
Triple Materia growth on some of Cloud and Cid's weapons and all of them had really good Limit Breaks (Lvl. 4 for Cloud and Cid, Lvl. 3 for Yuffie).
easy. would always go and get Yuffie, then never use her once.
His Limit Breaks and weapons were so shit.
Really never thought they'd do it
Golden Saucer, obvs.
Also fucking loved Costa del Sol.
Cosmo Canyon <3
As a result the music of the place sets me on edge.
Best place is obvs Midgar but bloody loved all the Nibelheim stuff
that boss is pretty brutal
Just the grinding in the dungeons was dead difficult as well. That and the submarine were killers.
I would always go to the sub to grind. Feel like the enemies there were great for leveling materia?
was the best place for XP i think
(will i ever say a nerdier thing than this?)
You could use 'Morph' on all the enemies in there with Yuffie and get Power Sources, Magic Sources etc. to increase your stats.
Best place for leveling up was the area with the Magic Pots in the Northern Crater.
and yuffie's town
I hated that on my first go for some reason. Is it dead hard?
think it was one of those where you had to pick a certain option, so it was tricky rather than hard (unless you cheated and got the game guide)
Great music, good level design, Turtle's Paradise was there and that fight on the Da-Chao statue was nails.
are going to be!
Think there is a lot of scope to expand what you see of the city and your immersion in it. Think they could do a great job of remaking the side games too (snowboarding, submarine, chocobo racing etc.). In fact, the Gold Saucer all around could be pretty cool.
Worried that it won't feel the same at all by the time you leave Midgar and step out onto the world map though... If that still even exists. Basically, get the idea that some of it will translate very well to current gen and some of it less so.
and the fact that the world map won't possibly be able to feel as huge and exciting as it did back in the day given what we're used to in modern gaming now.
rather than them being part of the world itself. I guess that will change.
most of the map outside of these places was just grass anyway.
think it would massively change the dynamics of the game to scrap it entirely but i can't really see them putting out a modern game with a top down view of a character running around a (mostly empty) field.
So bloody excited.
I hope they don't pull the plug on it..
This is one of my favourite pieces:
Standard battle music
So many memories :')
I can't though, brings back too many memories.
Favourites for me were the music in the Mako reactors, the Shinra building (that section when you see Jenova first is terrifying because there's no music actually) and the music at the Forgotten Capital.
Sandbox exploration and the like, mission based.
One long, tedious tunnel.
fairly sure it'll be shite and it'll ruin our childhoods
but what if it's everything we've ever hoped for?!
however you'll all desperately try and retain the kind of enthusiasm you had for it when you were young. But it won't be quite be there anymore. You'll blame the changes they've made, claim the magic has gone, but deep down you'll know you've just grown old, that youthful energy has faded, and you'll neverfeel that sense of wonder again for the remainder of your long, slow trudge towards the grave.
But being a miserable sort I kinda want in on that anyway.
i played it recently and the magic was still there despite the bad graphics and infuriatingly badly designed bits
FF7 needs a moden HD, voice acted, multiplayer online remake like I need a swift kick to the nuts
What made it so good was that it was a complete car crash; silly moments, mini games, best bits hidden away and not necessary for completion, first real Hollywood values in a home game, sweet spot of American influence and Japanese oddness, quirky non-human characters, huge variety in scenes, sense of a world beyond the screen you were looking at, chocobo racing.
Wonder if they'll allow themselves to keep much of that and have so much fun with it? Hope it doesn't turn into something of now rather than of then.
is by far the most exciting FFVII release the 21st century will ever see.
Fucking brilliant :D
listen to this now
but when you first come across those little digimon things, there's a bit where you cant walk 2 metres without one trying to fight you, so i put it away and went back to ECW Anarchy RUlz
FFVIII imps are more annoying.
Used to hate RPGs like this, I remember playing them on the Amiga and being like fucking hell this looks like it's gonna be well good. And then you'd come across someone who wants to fight you and face the grim reality that the whole thing is just an elaborate game of cards. Straight off.
Reno, Rude and Elena. Those were always class and the music when they came along was so good.
but they're on their holiday and cba to fight you so you call a truce
Jesus, I love FFVII more than any other game I've ever played.
Shenmue III has me over the fucking moon and I fired off to kickstarter but FFVII is perfect as it is. I dunno why I'm so defensive of it. I only completed it for the first time in 2012 on my PSone after years of sitting on it. Adored every minute of it.
but i don't just want to buy the same game again with better graphics. i already have the game on PC, and the graphics are part of the charm. sure, better graphics would be nice, but not new game price. not even £10 nice.
if they kind of extend and expand the game i'd be interested, but i don't think they will, that seems a bit of a risky move given how much enthusiasm there is for a simple re-doing
Like you said, the graphics are part of the charm of the original but I can't really understand why anyone wouldn't be at least interested in seeing how they pull off a full-scale cinematic re-vamp of it. Those familiar locations modernised on a huge scale could be absolutely mind-blowing to explore.
but interested isn't a strong word
and it could be mind-blowing to explore, but only if it actually is exploring. if it's treading a similar path, just with different graphics, well that's not tremendously exciting and immersive. if they expand and extend it, make areas bigger, different, more varied, really give something *new* rather than an improved version of what's familiar, that's at the point i'll buy into it
rather than an HD remaster or something like that. seems to imply a whole new expanded game.
always thought it was a pile of poo tbh
Just seen the trailer. This looks awesome.
I didn't really follow the story, it all got a bit weird when you started training and racing these weird ostrich things? Plus the whole turn based fighting reminded me of wanky trading card games or warhammer or something. I don't think I am cut out for that genre really. People are getting very excited about the remake, hoping for extra additions and making it interesting for the fans. Sorry, they just want to rinse as much cash as they can, and it is even easier with a large potential pool of buyers and a story and game already written for them.
and I quite liked just wandering round a bit.
I imagine it will cost as much if not more than the original to produce. Not denying that they'll make a killing off it but I don't think it will be effortless, easy money.
Absolutely, I doubt it'll make it any lasting impact on the creative trajectory of some of the franchises but I bet it'll be great for them financially.
Welp, pack it up E3, 'cos you'll never top this in a million years. Three megatons delivered in the span of an hour. It's unheard of.
i'm going to call all my settlements in Fallout 4 megaton
Where they updated the graphics and that was it. You can press a button for it to go back to the original graphics at any time. It's great. Best remake/update to a game ever so far.
are all so good, it's hard to see them boning this up. It's some of the gameplay which has aged a fair bit and could do with a revamp. Meanwhile, newer FF titles are quite good in that respect, but struggle to get you invested in the characters/story arc.
As long as they're very careful about ditching beloved things from the original, they should be OK.
I hope they have an option to turn it off and have speech bubbles instead. I HATED the voices in 10 and I find it much much harder to get into games with actors, its more like watching a shit movie
due to inflation
You have to buy gil in the online store
(no idea if this is valid, i read something similar online earlier)
that they were only just starting work on the actual game now, and it's hardly going to be their number 1 priority, as well as obviously their history of delays/taking forever.
yeah, seems appropriate
just seems like it's destined to fuck up and whatever they do a large contingent of idiots like me will be pissed off
I think I'm more excited about FFXV
look how big the heads are in the FF4 remake
presumably it's because the sprites had massive heads. I'm assuming they're going to keep the correct proportions here as well. FF7 just won't make any sense if Cloud has fingers
this shit, pokemon, all takey turny shite is fucking garbage. You're welcome
I'm really looking forward to this; I have no idea how I'd want it to be... partly even unsure because of how nostalgic I am for the aspects of the original game that'll be gone -- the MIDI music, especially, and there's a kind of innocence in how those blocky characters act that would probably be lost (Aeris when she first meets Cloud, for e.g.)... but I'd love to see some of those locations with HD clarity -- I'd love it if they included the ability to explore Midgar more freely...... it's one of those defining fictional settings for me
I remember when they retooled X-Wing for Windows 95 and suddenly I had a machine that could play the game at ridiculously good resolution. But they'd got rid of the old iMuse music that matched the gameplay, and just used the CD to loop random bits of actual Star Wars soundtrack and it was total shit and ruined the game. Yes, it no longer sounded like someone playing the theme music on a Casio keyboard but that had been part of the charm.
Not sure remastering ever really works well. A lot of why you enjoyed a game was about timing and what it did that impressed you when you first saw it.
I really love the the solo piano versions as well.
I'm obviously going to pay for it on day one; but I'm so curious as to what it'll be like.
Pros for me are going to be, as I say, to maybe be able to explore a more immersive version of that world... and see a bit of Midgar, especially (I just hope they manage to nail that dreamily bleak noir atmosphere). I think I'd love if they added more -- not necessarily extra main stuff -- but more optional hidden secrets and mysteries, as this was a major strength to the original name, in my view.
Possible cons are going to revolve around the characters -- the humour of the original wouldn't scan so well with the super-realistic character designs they'll be able to create... and how they made the most out of those kinda primitive character models (the charmingly childlike mannerisms of the characters -- which reminds me adorably of how 9-year-old me used to copy how FF7 characters jump, with the little preliminary arm motions and that) will either be scrapped or just look totally weird. Maybe they'll be able to work around that sort of thing -- I just hope they don't make the game overly angst-ridden and po-faced.
Also, I can't think of any instance where voice-acting hasn't taken something away from a FF game. I really like FFX, but the voice-acting (while not necessarily bad, just dealing with dialogue that's better just left as decent enough text -- and it doesn't help that Tidus is a cringey little dickhead at the best of times) doesn't really add so much.
tl;dr, I'm looking forward to it and just hoping they're thoughtful and do a decent job of it; making sure to keep that tone of humour that balances with the dark stuuuuuuuuuff instead of just making Cloud extra broooding
I thought every FF game was pretty much standalone so why not just make a new sequel that is heavily tooled to include the elements of FF VII that people love?
due to a string of not as good games. No one would trust them to get it right, and it'd never sell as well as good ol' trusty VII will.
nobody's really cared about a FF game since X
I cared about FFXII until I played it
but yeah, not on the same level at all
Yep, XIII has been the lowest in terms of story, assembled an entire cast of characters with a sum total of no charisma.
XII was okay, I just found it boring.
or memorable stories, but really fun to play coz of the battle system
What was the battle system? Seem to remember free-roaming in a kind of Phantasy Star Online sort of way but then you bump into a creature and then it goes a bit like previous FFs?
no separate screen for battles, and the gambit system meant you could program how your characters behave in battle and you essentially didn't have to do anything except walk around and you'd be slaughtering everything as you went. was really quite satisfying.
did anyone play XIII-2 or Lightning Strikes Again or whatever it was called?
I'm quite excited about XV, although it'll probably be a huge disappointment.
me neither. this announcement/idea came 5 years late, classic square enix. and with not even a mention of a release date, don't expect if for at least another 2/3 years. square enix have proved themselves to be an absolute mess, and continually shit themselves in embarrassment, don't understand how everyone has seemingly forgotten how incapable they have been in the last decade. how will this be any different? just play the original, it still plays really well and is surprisingly immersive for such an old/graphically dated game.
But we still like to get excited sometimes.
if it doesn't live up to expectations. Win, win.
has made me quite optimistic; I'm quite intrigued by the idea that they're trying to make it more than just a straight-up remake... there's no way of knowing how it'll turn out, but I'm intrigued by their willingness to try something new here.
and published it when it was ready
"We can’t have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre. Of course there will likely be changes there."
is for it to be on 3 discs
with the massive storage space of a blu-ray, i want them to split it up, i want that real-life immersion. if cloud can travel worlds, i can travel to the playstation twice a game. fuck even if i download it i want to have to change discs goddamn it
(apart from the ending, obviously)
Midgar's always been my favourite fictional setting, so to see it rendered like that is pretty awesome. Jury's out on the new combat system, but I get the feeling that structurally, it's going to be pretty faithful to the original.
people will realize how shit this game is
Have different game mechanics
And they are going to change the plot in many ways
This is just a new Final Fantasy game with old characters in it isn't it?
Not for me.
Idk if I've already said this, but obviously played it at the time and sunk hours into it when I should have been revising. But 2/3 years ago I decided to replay it again, this time with a guide so I could get all those posters you're meant to find (cos some areas you can't return to), and pick up ALL the spells you steal from enemies.
I'd got cloud and the gang up to level 55 or so and spent a week grinding in the crashed submarine maxing out their limit breaks.
Then my PS3 died.
Much like when I accidentally saved over my skyrim character, it's taken me this long to want to start over.
There's SO MANY awesome bits in FF7, but last time I played it genuinely looks like turd these days. Am I going to ruin my rose-tinted view of it, or can I finally get to the point to smash ruby weapon's face in (never managed it).
most old school games hold up pretty well, the graphics were never going for realistic and were always deformed and OTT. FF9 still looks really great these days I think
was surprisingly easy in the end
