Fucking hell http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-33040618
Makes the CEO's interview the next day where he dismissed everything as "teething problems" even worse.
been open for over two years?
I don't think anyone has referred to the incident on Tuesday as teeth problems.
and I was half-asleep, but they asked him about the ride's safety record and he went through all the reasons it was impossible for anyone to get hurt on the ride and then dismissed past problems as teething problems. Seemed unnecessary to me.
The incident on Tuesday is a totally different class of incident.
I'm not in a position to know if it was otherwise different, but according to that interview it's impossible to get hurt on that ride. Didn't think that was a very smart or reassuring answer given the circumstances.
but the major difference is that all the failsafes will have also failed this time. It *should* be impossible for two cars to enter the same block of track - evidently not the case last week - and that certainly hasn't happened since the ride opened, in every other case, while people may have been stuck on the ride they've been completely safe. One possible exception would be a (non-load bearing) bolt sheering off the ride shortly after it opened.
Rollercoaster failures aren't that rare - in the same way that National Rail are always have to deal with signal failures. Evidently, whoever was being interviewed shouldn't have said "impossible" if he did, but essentially the same principles apply as to rail or air travel - there's all kinds of redundancy built in and it's designed to revert to a known safe state if a failure's detected, making injury extremely unlikely.
Questions are: why did all the failsafes go wrong, was there a failure in process that contributed to the crash and how can the process and technical measures on rollercoasters be improved to ensure people's safety in future.
why the fuck doesn't the front of the car have a crumple zone? Is it just because it wouldn't look as cool, because it sounds very much as if that would have made a big difference? :(
it shouldn't need it?
do you suppose? I guess quite a lot. This seems like a pretty obvious one if we assume we've got a vehicle travelling at high speed.
I read somewhere that the other girl is in a similar position.
could lose both of them :(
ooft, didn't realise it was anywhere near that serious.
Also this quote...
Honeymooner Craig Cooper: "It was horrific what happened but I'm glad they've opened the rest of Alton Towers."
'yeah of course it's awful I just want to go on nemesis and don't really care'.
Plus who goes to Alton towers on their honeymoon...
Totally deserves to lose his legs.
whiter than white I am
does make me consider that I should probably prepare a suitable portfolio in the event I ever end up on the news
His parents were happy for the paper to do a tribute piece and they were asked if they could provide pictures, and the main one they gave was of him, grinning, in a pair of speedos, lying on a sunbed. They said it summed up the fact he was a cheeky chappie and was the perfect way for people to remember him. And who are we to argue?
like the girls were 18 and 19 and the dudes were... like 19 and 27?
a 19 year-old dating a 27 year-old is not necessarily skeezy. he might be a big kid, she might be mature for her years. consenting adults. idk. w/e.
Of course he's a big kid. Any guy dating over that sort of age gap is almost certainly a fucking manbaby who can't deal with women his own age. There is no such thing as a 19 year old (of any gender) who is that mature.
it's the gap at that age.
19 year old women are not children. I had 2/3 of an oxford law degree at the age of 19 and my boyfriend at the time was 36 and nobody batted an eyelid.
I do kind of get where you're coming from. I can't really hold up my own slightly mad life xer3peicnes and claim them to be the norm. And I do agree a lot of grown men who date teens will undoubtedly be sleazes or have emotional insecurities that rule out more mature relationship. But you can't just automtically assume it's not right.
I don't see it being that big a deal.
When I was 19, I would not have gone out with someone my own age, they all seemed so babyish and boring and had shit cars.
but I'd definitely give a friend a kicking if they were dating someone under 20 now
PROBABLY IN ALL FAIRNESS A SLEAZY WEIRDO WITH A MICROPENIS
New ride coming to Alton Towers SOON.
My dad was 29 when he first got with my 19 year old mum. They seem fine. Obviously I give him shit for it though.
All things are possible.
I actually didn't cite women particularly because it's just true that at 19 you're a fucking idiot about most things. If you can't remember being 19 and all the ridiculous notions you had about your own immortality etc. then I'm fairly surprised.
I also didn't use the word sleazy because I'm not trying to imply said bloke is a bit yewtree or something, it's just about differences in how you view life and the sort of guys you see doing this.
And yeah, I definitely used the words *almost* certainly because all things are different. Not really sure why you're getting upset about this.
Granted, it's perhaps a little unusual, but nothing worth getting in a twist over.
Louie_Tacos is so weirdly out there I felt the need to counter his blether. It's generally important.
between consenting adults or does there come a time when it stops being an issue?
bake him away, toys
as that follows the half your age + 7 rule.
brain def not working. I did it on a calculator (on the computer) and everything. And still somehow thought 19 was in a 20+ range.
I was incredibly worried you might somehow have done me tbh
so close to Fidel's approval.
because I don't want to agree with Fidel *still bitter his girlfriend dumped him for a uni studient when he was a 6th former* Catstro
are there any relationships with big age differences that are perfectly fine: of course
are most relationships with them, esp. where the dude is much older a bit suboptimal: probably
are most dudes who repeatedly date women much younger than them a bit suboptimal: almost certainly
to achieve maximum thread points haul
Like it was this lunchtime.
It's awful, sue the fuckers for everything they've got, but there's so much worse shit going on.
Out of the fucking millions of things that are more important
Could give the money to Alton Towers
and the fact that deep down people are looking at it thinking tat could have been me/ m,y daughter, thank goodness it wasn't, how lucky we are.
Because it'sd possible to conceive of a situation where you might go onto a rollercoaster and have an accident, but not easy to conceive of a situation where you end up being an asylum seeker, or having to flee your country or be massacred, or being subjected to famine.
It's why ebola scared us quite so much, but ONLY when it looked like it might actually leave africa.
I'm not saying it's right, but it is what it is.
soon pure news will be nothing but scrolling data, just endless reams of numbers telling you everything from share performances to football results.
DiS, check yo self
I think he might be my Nemesis. He's flumin about something.
Boring dickheads trying to find anything to have an argument over
of your own threads.
Five replies on the subject the topic's actually about, followed by around 70 replies crying about something only tangentially related to it and which most people consider entirely acceptable. Round it all off with a few people moaning about how crap the thread is, and there you have it.
pointlessly attempting to dictate who was having a cry and who was on the side of the righteous.
(obviously the criers were those who got all riled up and emotional that one might so much as raise an eyebrow at a big age gap so young)
(and are still crying about it on social media this morning ;))
look how many facets there are to be discussed
made by the same company that made Suarez
its basically definitely exactly the same or something
so best to be on the safe side and shut them "for the foreseeable future"
Been thinking they're a bit old fashioned for a while now. They're totally naff and I don't think they fit with the cool new future.
Fuck them off I say, I put them in the same category as stuff like Britains got talent etc, they're part of the old world. Get rid! Depressing places.
Can you kind of see what I'm saying though? the more I think about it, the more embarrassing theme parks are. They're done fidel, over.
When are we getting the cool hologram android mods, Sean!?
(In addition to Theo obviously.)
I mean my only experience of Thorp Park was a bit GoT Season 5: fuck loads of waiting for a few moments of fun, and the occasional utterly shit thing.
doesn't mean it shouldn't be for someone, you know?
The queues were ludicrous but I've been told week days are a lot better.
Never a truer word was spoken, imo.
that was good
