has Hans Solo in it?
Stop getting Star Wars wrong!
Also I have never watched star wars with subtitles
And then Han Solo and Chewbacca turn up and you're like 'Oh God this is going to be TERRIBLE isn't it?'
cheesy line at the end - no doubt - but everything so far points towards this being a great sequel :)
Was enjoying it all (aside from the horrible snap focus on the Falcon flying into that tunnel), but wrinkly Harrison Ford made me burst out laughing.
At some point in the film the 'new generation' of kids will be doing some fighting while ol' man Solo is trying to keep up, then one of the kids will do something like shoot a Stormtrooper that was juuuust about to get Han, and he'll say, with just enough pause for dramatic effect: "Don't get cocky, kid!", and everyone in the audience will start cheering and standing on their chairs and I will ROLL MY EYES AND TUT LOUDLY.
we'll just think of you in our prayers
Genuinely made the space fights in battlestar et al look really cool.
if FYDs and Peggles can come in and slag it off I'll be 100% stoked for this film
kind of sad how his star has faded eh
mark's hand mill
I have faith in JarJar Abrams.
Also spurred me into actually picking up the original trilogy on DVD to replace my VHS version. Fuck knows what edition they'll be, the Amazon page is a hot mess.
Impossible on Amazon.
Mine has all three films (with the updated special effects) and each film has a bonus disc that contains the original theatrical cut for that film, nothing added on.
It looks like this:
I'm fairly sure it's out of print now.
But I don't think it's the one I've got on the way.
Doesn't matter too much to me anyway. STAR WARS!
If you were lucky, maybe you got the ones with the original original untouched versions on a separate DVD, which is nice to have.
Imagine if Disney revisit all six films. You know, dial back the shit bits on the SE discs and then apply the sort of changes fans did to the prequel trilogy, but using the original stuff so it's perfect and maybe a little better. Call it the Ultimate Edition or something.
As long as it's got X-Wings and Wookiee noises, it's all fine by me.
They clean up the Rancor bits, Greedo ALMOST shoots first and there is a bit more cleaning.
Downside is they now have McDiarmid in ESB and the new dialogue is fucking weird and clunkier than anything previously. They also upped sound effects over music in the mix, which means a lot of the big music cues are much quieter, although that may be something you are happy with.
It's some bollocks viral marketing
The guy's even called Harrison ffs
i didn't watch that with the sound on though, so the answer may be in there.
Return of the Jedi was 32 years ago. This film is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi.
explain THAT abrahams
so how are they going to explain the two year gap??
It didn't tell me that visually in the trailer, so I didn't know.
didn't clue you in to the film being set 30 years later?
that you might expect the films to follow quickly off from the last one.
I mean, we have stormtroopers and shit. The Zahn books were set 5 years after but it seems a bit weird they're spent 30 years fighting the Empire's remnants, maybe?
"Chewie has aged well" and caused me to give a little laughsnort.
needs more lightsaber blades
so next film will be mid 2017 and Ep IX will be Dec 2019. Nice.
prefer the annual christmassy treat schedule. who wants to watch a film in the middle of a year? not I
The quicker the better, before too many important people die.
until about 3 years ago. but since then i have hosted norway's arguably biggest SW event to date, so i'd say i've made up for it.
Come on Theo, I've posted it on fb AND instagram!!!!!
I thought you thought you'd posted a link to a picture in your other post. So I was just checking you realised there wasn't a link to a picture.
"But daaaad I don't wanna be a space pilot I wanna go to school and study botany."
"YOU GET IN THAT MILLENNIUM FALCON AND FIRE SOME LAZERS YOU LITTLE SHIT."
*slams bedroom door*
At the moment they aren't giving anything away as to who (if any) of Rey, Kylo, or Domnhall Gleeson's characters are Skywalker/Solo kids. If Rey is, then why is she living on her own on a desert planet? Is she in hiding?
If Kylo (Driver) is, then why is he seemingly evil? Perhaps he has rebelled against his parents wishes, and been seduced by the dark side...
And who is Gleeson even playing? Its speculated he's an Imperial officer of some kind, although it seems the Empire might be dead now, replaced by The First Order apparently (a rather Third Reich style group, it would seem). However he could be a double agent of some kind, but if he is Luke's son, then who is the mother?
All very intriguing!!
Either they've spent 3 decades fighting the remains of the Empire. That seems a bit batshit, although here they are with Stormtoopers and TIE fighters...
At a guess, though, any child of Han and Leia would have left home to go and do stuff by now. If we assume the Empire's return (The First Order, you say?) is unexpected, like they find some big bunker full of spare ships and suits and use that to begin their second 'strike back', this would explain the fact that we see her out on her own. Maybe she's trying to sort out smugglers?
Probably the classic situation is the one where everyone's struggling to get back to each other. She's trapped out there somewhere by the Empire returning, so Han and Chewie fire up the Falcon again and go looking for her?
Looked like Luke had become a hermit. I'd guess maybe he's gone to Dagobah...
or it could be she is in hiding to protect her (perhaps from her evil brother), or maybe she doesn't even know who she really is, a la Luke in A New Hope.
Luke does seem to be living a hermit life (but at least he's still got R2 to shoot the shit with) - its been speculated that this is due to him becoming too powerful, and perhaps going a bit crazy, and so he has isolated himself so he can't do any damage.
According to prop descriptions at the Celebration event, the Empire is now The First Order, although how this transformation has taken place isn't cleat yet. Clearly a direct descendant of the Empire though, considering the stormtroopers and TIE fighters etc.
ALSO the Rebel Alliance / New Republic now appears to be called The Resistance, although again they have the same insignia as the rebels did and are flying X-Wings, so it must be a direct offspring. Presumably they are 'resisting' The First Order, who as you say perhaps have made some kind of fight back and have started taking over worlds again. Perhaps they even have some kind of Death Star -type super-weapon which is helping them do this....
his two kids who are unknown to one another, and a band of plucky rebels squaring off against an evil establishment?
Sounds familiar somehow.
JJ should face trolled the world by having jar jar appear beside them after the we're home bit, really mug to the camera
or is that just nonsense
like the planes that shoot the death star
that when it takes off it sounds like the tie-fighter
christmas is ages away anyway. I'll have totally forgotten about it by then.
but one or two, yeah
but that might mean a drop of about 80% chat and the site needs revenue enough as it is
actually think this film has a good cast. looking forward to seeing how they explain why Luke Skywalker looks so haggard nowadays
in the Celebration panel yesterday (when the trailer was debuted)
*^%$£*&*@ to everybody else.
looks like he might though eh
BB8 and Artoo <3
a m a z i n g
I think that John Boyega is going to be doing a lot of heavy breathing in this film.
even when they're getting breakfast, just doing laps of the table
great timing boys
I mean at a US friendly time, but still.
so it's a leak
well anyway, no one cares :D
however long this film is, I'd rather re-experience that for the same amount of time than watch it
and I love me some Batman.
And even I couldn't give a toss about this.
more cautious curiosity. But after re-watching the original trilogy last week and seeing this I'm pretty damn excited.
Might even re-visit the prequels - not seen Clones or Sith since the cinema. Or will that spoil things again?
people actually seemed pretty into it by the end?
Talking of which does anyone remember the Droids and Ewoks cartoons. Used to like them. Are they canon?
They were pretty silly, of course.
I never saw the droid one - was that on UK TV? Ewoks was on during BBC childrens TV
it was C3-PO and R2D2 and some others I remember a Han Solo type character.
Ah there you go:
Looks like they both ran '85/'86.
although Droids may have been reserved for the Saturday/Sunday morning slots.
Got the ewoks cartoon on DVD, Lucas special editioned them and tried to edit them into one film with no theme tune
It can't NOT be good can it?
and had to have an embarrassed rewatch this morning
it was THE BEST BIT.
- realising that "home" was the falcon
- realising the VO was taken from the third film
aw man I'm so stoked I can't even
I mean the first three lines are from Jedi but the 'and YOU have it' isn't, I thought?
Imperial class Star Destroyer at the start and then the Millennium Falcon flies through the engines of a Super Star Destroyer at the end.
I loved X-Wing/TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance when I was younger. I know the difference between at least four different types of Star Destroyer to this day.
you need to GET OUT of this thread.
You've only had 3 years to get good and are an anomaly.
Large ship at the back: 'Super' class Star Destroyer
Smaller ship in the foreground: 'Imperial' class Star Destroyer.
and the one that Admiral Piet is on in ROTJ" would probably have sufficed.
is Vader's one.
I don't believe we ever saw another at the ROTJ battle. And in terms of films it's never even named. That there are multiple ones is an extended universe thing.
Even the name 'Super Star Destroyer' is kind of funny. The only person to say it is Akbar in the final battle and maybe he's just saying 'super Star Destroyer' to make his point clear to the other rebels, like instead of 'really big Star Destroyer', and it's just sort of stuck.
I'm only saying that those are the two examples of the craft if you've only watched the films, which may be the case for whiterussian as she's only come to SW recently.
but all I was saying was Darth Vader's main 'cruising around' ship was a Super Star Destroyer and it is known as The Executor (No, it's named as such in the film but all the technical journals and official Lucasfilm bumf as it so).
'Super Star Destroyer' is a moniker supposedly used by Rebels and Imperials alike, hence probably why Ackbar was prone to use it when he did?
Spot on on the name sticking like that. Was it ever referred to as 'Executor' during the films actually? I'm due a rewatch.
I got way to into the extended universe when I was younger (owned 40+ of the books, played loads of the games) so I ended up obsessed with the spacecraft from the series.
I'm pretty sure Theo and I are right in saying it's never actually referenced as 'The Executor' within the films.
Awesome - I got stuck into like the first six books supposedly set directly after ROTJ (the Zahn stuff etc) and then some of the 'Tales from...' ones, but the gaming side (video aside) remains a mystery to me. I was given Star Wars Risk a couple of years back but not cracked it open yet lol.
Although, if it has a new world map it could really change the tactics!
I only ever read the Zahn ones. Saw a lot of negative reviews for the three that came after.
Anyone ever read Splinter in the Mind's Eye, or whatever it's called? Alan Dean Foster wrote it straight after Star Wars and it's pretty nutty since it's clear that if Lucas had ANY involvement then he obviously hadn't yet thought a thing about how Empire Strikes Back was going to be :D
but is that the story where Luke and Leia go off in search of the khyber crystal (or something like that?), which was supposedly the source of the Force?? And they get closer as 'a couple'?
But there's also Vader in it and when he appears he's referred to as a Dark Lord of the Sith in a way that very much implies he's an alien and that The Sith all live on some planet and all either look like Vader or live in an atmosphere that requires a suit like Vader's.
I mean clearly this could be your natural assumption if you just saw Star Wars on its own.
Loads of background here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splinter_of_the_Mind%27s_Eye that I never saw before!
I'd never read up on that, just dismissed it as a non-canon entry in the Extended Universe.
Regarding the other books, there were some awful entries in the series. I enjoyed the X-Wing series, The Black Fleet Crisis books and the Corellian trilogy. 'The Courtship of Princess Leia' was a pretty good standalone book, along with 'The Truce at Bakura'.
I was just nerding out for a bit.
The opening shot of the new trailer is immense in any case :-)
for a number of years. NERDNERDNERDNERD...
Still have the original book in a box somewhere plus Star Warriors and a couple of scenarios. Must have lost/given away/sold the equipment book with the Falcon blueprints, though. :(
love the equipment book - probably a desert island book. Somehow, I didn't feel that playing Star Wars role playing was sad. I loved it.
The system was nicely done, although obviously issues with the feel of going from xD6+3 to (x+1)D6 in my mind. I mean I realise that in terms of averages it should work out...
But also the nature of the Star Wars setting being that people are inherently good or evil, and the players have to be good takes away a lot of the subtleties you can get in other RPGs and tended to make adventures a little narrow in scope.
They also had to sort of shoe-horn in the continuity of how long hyperspace journeys took, which never quite worked for me.
I enjoyed being a shit Jedi who frequently only had enough force skills to narrowly avoid chopping off his own arm, and I did flirt with the dark side a bit, which was fun. Now if I can just find my meticulously drawn modified Corellian Stock Light Freighter drawing...as I recall it was quite like this...
I mean, we had fun playing it, I just don't think it had the longevity of others.
were terrific, but to think there are now entire alternative universes on wikipedia for all manner of science fiction / fantasy series / sagas / films - amazing.
But lots of people saying the design of the Sith badass looks like Revan from those games?
Can't believe how 2 minutes has changed my attitude to Star Wars. Not given a shit about it for 20 years until last night.
fucking no-one should ever use the word "nerdgasm" but this is getting pretty close
That opening scene has totally got me.
First trailer I was sceptical but now I am in 100%. Hook line and sinker.
Cannot bloody wait.
I thought he was a BIG fan of Prince Hans from Frozen.
Have some fucking dignity, Harrison Ford.
Seriously though he looks so old just get him a chair or something.
SO EXCITED!!!!!!! Smiling like a loon
a ticket to last night's live Celebration Q&A and trailer debut broadcast at the Empire, Leicester Square - good fun!
We've been bitten by good trailers before, and all the trailers for 'The Force Awakens' will be slightly loaded because of their nostalgia angle (and JJ is sweating that asset hard!), but this really does look initially wonderful.
The downed Destroyer on Jaku was the most striking image for me, just pipping Vader's mangled face mask and someone going berserk in a TIE fighter in a hanger bay.
As long as the new characters and storyline stack up, because it's those that'll form the new backbone of the franchise's future, then we'll be on to a winner. The nostalgia card will only really 'pay' off for Disney/Lucasfilm on this release in terms of convincing 'floating' voters, IMHO.
"Chewie...we're home." <3
Maybe if my daughter ever expresses an interest I'll try to make her watch them like that with me.
except mine will have to watch them all at least once, and then it's up to her! I like the machete concept but I think I'm going to go originals then the prequels because (maybe selfishly) I'd like her to experience the original tale unfettered as I did.
And then when littleun is older just do the original trilogy and then let him decided if he wants to see the prequel/new ones.
And I didn't like it, I'm not going to be that guy though I'll just say it's not for me but I hope you guys all enjoy it
Dunno, it matters to those of us who like it because the quality of the films from 1977 and 1980 is shockingly better than those from more recent years.
With darth maul? The red guy
I'm not going to lie: you'll probably still find the original Star Wars pretty shoddy too, but you might at least get a sense of why people like Star Wars from it. Maybe.
Not sure what anyone can get from The Phantom Menace except disappointment.
particularly the first and last 20-25 minutes, but it is unfortunate that's the one G has seen - not the best start (considering its Episode One - ammright guys? Heyhooo!)
I've heard it's confirmed that he'll be making a comeback.
Not CGI heavy (using real extras)
Ships look amazing and not over polished
Proper old school blowing stuff up special effects
Gritty and sandy
I would have thought Han would have changed his jacket by now for a beige anorak (like most pensioners), but otherwise happy to see him - if Old Ford worked in Indiana Jones 4 (plot excepting), he should work here.
as it spoils the thrill of old-man-Harrison showing up at the end.
aside from that.. OMG.
it was incredible how they just switched to the proper HD/1080 trailer at the end of the panel stream on YouTube.
all in all the Star Wars Celebration stuff put the TIDAL panel to absolute shame. trust Hollywood to get this shit right.
As evidenced by his Star Trek movie he can do "fan service". He'll know he's basically bullet proof on the first one so long as he sticks to a fairly basic structure, something like:
Space battle, ground battle, lightsaber fight, space battle, speeder chase, space battle, lightsaber fight. Possibly with a stealth / sneak through big spaceship bit chucked in.
Keep the dialogue to sections of less than 5 minutes, plenty of references to the original trilogy: sorted.
The big test will be where he goes with the 2nd and 3rd films.
Abrams isn't directing the 2nd and 3rd films.
What the pissing fuck are you all wetting yourselves about?
didn't you see all of the STAR WARS in it?
I'll just remain smug about what you're choosing to miss out on.
As a meat, I struggle to understand vegetarianism...sorry...
I like Star Wars. There's not really anything in this trailer to suggest it's going to be good or bad. Just looks like a film.
trailers are almost always totally misleading about the quality of a film (gross generalisation alert). Think this sort of thing has been done many times...
Just knew it was the ewoks one, and the sarlak pit, and jabba, and NOOOOOOOOOOOOO or whatever. Tried to last night. FUCKING HELL it's awful. Turned off after an hour. Tripe.
and that might be my favourite. Jabba's palace, the speeder bike chase, forest battle with the Scout Walkers etc. Love it.
Sorry not sorry.
the most AMAZING space battle ever committed to film that was done WITHOUT CGI!!!
just sticking in that fighter thing?
and also handy for delivering messages etc innit
also genuinely the funniest character in the whole franchise
Second half > first half.
STAR WARS! STAR WARRRRRRRRRS!
popped about 4 boners throughout.
realy is the best, luke is badass in that one!
