Neil Robertson's yer winner, thanks for coming.
Stuck all my beans on Trump at 15/2 around Masters time. I just have a feeling y'know. His game's been more disciplined of late and him running Ronnie to the wire in the UK Championships seemed to signal a shift in my mind.
Not sure what's happened to Selby this season. Got the `Crucible Curse` lingering over him so don't fancy him to do owt.
Murphy's at 11/1 which is pretty ridiculous.
As always it boils down to how much Ronnie can be bothered. I think he's up for it. Semi-finals at least for sure.
Reckon one of O'Sullivan, Selby or Murphy to win it.
Hasn't Selby won a couple of titles recently? He'll definitely be in contention.
Looking forward to Ding capitulating in the second round.
I fancy Ali Carter to do well, tough first round against Angles though.
for how many times Dennis Taylor points out that Alan McManus's nickname is angles.
I reckon it'll net out at 0.75 mentions a frame. Match will go to the wire so... 14 I make that (rounded up)
so he can use an "I'm loving Angles instead" line.
I think he could be in with a shout, though Ronnie and Robertson are the favourites for me.
Williams v. Stevens and Captain v. Angles probably the stand-outs...
Mark Selby (Eng) v Kurt Maflin (Nor)
Stephen Maguire (Sco) v Anthony McGill (Sco)
Joe Perry (Eng) v Zhang Anda (Chn)
Shaun Murphy (Eng) v Robin Hull (Fin)
Barry Hawkins (Eng) v Matthew Selt (Eng)
Mark Allen (NI) v Ryan Day (Wal)
Ali Carter (Eng) v Alan McManus (Sco)
Neil Robertson (Aus) v Jamie Jones (Wal)
Ding Junhui (Chn) v Mark Davis (Eng)
John Higgins (Sco) v Robert Milkins (Eng)
Marco Fu (HK) v Jimmy Robertson (Eng)
Judd Trump (Eng) v Stuart Carrington (Eng)
Ricky Walden (Eng) v Graeme Dott (Sco)
Stuart Bingham (Eng) v Robbie Williams (Eng)
Mark Williams (Wal) v Matthew Stevens (Wal)
Ronnie O'Sullivan (Eng) v Craig Steadman (Eng)
My prediction for Judd to beat Ronnie in the semis and to go on to win the lot is on!!
been in Sheffield for 3 and a half years and never been. Feel like I should this year but not sure if it will be any good or a bit dull.
yeah, it's amazing. go for it.
weekday daytime sessions are pretty cheap if i iirc
Think if I lived in or close to Sheffield I'd try and go to it, for the atmosphere of the thing, even if the particular match was not that great a prospect. Tickets for next year's World Championships go on sale on 4 May if you're interested.
It's an interesting experience going to a snooker tournament. Being sat in complete silence watching the players do their stuff is pretty surreal.
Could be a shock on the cards.
Selby through after winning the final frame.
Very decent performance for his first appearance at the Crucible. Maguire could be in trouble here.
final frame decider wooo
Clearly very confident but seems like a nice lad with it. Seemed to get a bit cocky mind at 9-5 up - took on a couple of needlessly ballsy shots and Maguire clawed him back. Looked like he properly shat it (wouldn't have blamed him either - Crucible debut and all that) but pulled one out the bag to win.
Future top 16 lad for sure.
He's an utter cunt.
robbie williams really doesn't suit being bald.
That last frame was hard work
willie thorne sounds like he's dying to get home
bit of a shit way to end. williams was unlucky there.
as stuart bingham
iirc he's shrewbie's favourite player/person
forgets he's going for a 147 and plays for the blue
Never seen anything like it.
Good for him to be good humoured about it though.
ryan day is shitting the bed here. he should be 5-0 up.
'return of the mack' always makes me laugh
early shout for a ronnie 147
ronnie playing in his socks like a twat
A delight to watch the two old mates going about it. Shame it's not tighter overnight but Williams flunked plenty of chances.
Shame that `younger viewers` probably have no memory of quite *how* good Williams was in his prime. Thought after he did for Doherty in the classic 2003 final that he was becoming unbeatable. Had the complete game. Remarkable downturn thereafter.
so, so awful
smurphy looks on decent form though
as he misses a sitter :D
anyone watching zhang v perry? this 13th frame is amazing
hope to see more of him in future
I bet he's from Yorkshire
haha close enough, Grimsby - a place I'd like to visit
oof, higgins is pumping ding. didn't expect that.
When he was 5-1 down and looking cagey I feared the worst. Ding DOES look more relaxed at the Crucible these days but he still doesn't quite seem to have the bottle to get his A game on against the big boys. Can't see Higgins being too worried as he grinds his way to an inevitable victory but... we'll see.
plucky scottish ginger
Dare I say he's got a potential `future World Champion` vibe about him. And they're certainly in very short supply amongst the up-and-coming crop. Michael White's one perhaps. And that Luca Brecel's due to break through at some point. Other than that...
his face hardly moves
He'll be done in by the Quarters though, if so. Can't think of many tougher first 2 matches than a Maguire, Selby combo.
Just doesn't seem to have happened for him though, sadly.
many battles with carrington to come! their first was apparently in the 2006 kiddie snooker final
Selby's in all sorts of trouble (and he struggled in the first round as well, which isn't going to help).
Could be the final frame here! Amazing.
Fair play to him. Selby wasn't playing particularly badly in that session, either.
I like McGill's manner and he seems to have a good sense of humour in interviews. Played seemingly effortlessly too.
in the mid session interval last night, and I thought he came cross quite well. Also enjoyed at one point Willie Thorne mentioning that McGill has been known to post videos of himself playing guitar on youtube in the sort of tone that suggested that this was highly deviant behaviour.
Thought Selby was quite gracious afterwards, too, in fairness, acknowledging that McGill deserved to win and suggesting that he could win the whole thing (he won't, but it would be nice if he can get into the semis at least).
and McGill still beat him. Edged him in the safety stakes as well. Doesn't happen often with Selby - very impressive.
What we learnt this weekend:
- McGill is a serious player
- Ronnie's up for it
- Ding's finally got bottle
- Murphy's playing ridiculously well
- Trump's game is looking very good.
Some of these quarters/semis are going to be VERY tasty.
Nah, he fell off a speedboat or something doing panto a few years ago and is a bit paralysed.
Shaun Murphy dressed in a crimson waistcoat and trousers! What a vision!
FYI, the German for "break-building" is "break-building".
they're probably a wrong'un
He has that combination of being smarmily forthright but with no charisma/charm. Bit of an oddball. Difficult to warm to.
it's the home schooling
still a cunt.
he's on the 'Frame With...' filler bit.
quarter finals are looking pretty tasty
...and then somehow one of the semis ends up being Hawkins vs. Bingham or something.
don't remember it being this difficult to pick a winner though.
with the exception of hawkins and bingham you could imagine any one of them winning it. even mcgill is in with a shout, though I assume he'll break down eventually.
if he plays as well as he has, he's certainly good enough to win it.
But like I say upthread his first match was a final frame decider against Maguire and then he edged out Selby in the second. The lad will be fucking knackered.
But yeah Robertson, Murphy, Ronnie and Trump all showing championship winning form. Remarkable stuff - haven't seen this for years.
Judy Trump did that thumps up/thumbs down thing yesterday, his thumbs up drink was water...
4-0 up against Ding.
Really could do with him winning it y'know #beertokens
4-0 up against ding too?
Hawkins/Bingham final is still on lads #OOF
Robbo's in a spot of bother. Ronnie should be docked a frame for his chalk indiscretion yesterday I'd have thought. Could see both tumble out.
dunno what's happening to robertson here, he was looking untouchable before this match
Robertson in the zone is almost unplayable. But if a player disrupts his rhythm or he falls behind he is prone to crumble.
Possibly the best front-runner in the game, but when he's behind he often gets beaten. He's only been in one World Championship final for a reason.
that century should put the Thunder back on track. Absolutely no way in screaming blue hell am I watching a Bingham/Hawkins final. Ronnie should hopefully see off Bingo, thought he played OK yesterday.
Trump yesterday was fantastic, combined with 'why always me' Din made for great watching
Don't fancy him against Murphy again though after what happened at the Masters!
a win for barry hawkins is a loss for snooker
starting to get uneasy the amount of time dennis taylor spends talking about mcgill's smile
he deserved it tbf
judd's got to be the favourite for the tournament now?
Want him to equal Hendry's record
kick him out of snooker
this is great
bingham hawkins final is still on
Any final between those 2/Trump would've been a classic.
Fully expect Murphy to get through but not so sure about Judd. Bingham's looking very, very good. Not missing much. Trump has a habit of underestimating people and getting beaten.
Still holding out for Bingham Hawkins though!!!!!!!!!!
Really enjoyed last night, despite Bingo and Hawky getting through.
Murphy v Trump in the final now please*
*Bingo v Hawky is actually gonna happen isn't it :(
holy shit man, trump pots some ridiculous shots
^hates naughty snooker
Looks like a complete gent.
Bingham looks pretty controlled and he's really not missing much. Judd looked edgy. Needs to step it up. Not least because I need that £50 I've got riding on him.
yer man's getting a pumping shrewbie
11/1 at the start of the tournament FFS :(
that 23rd frame in trump v bingham was great.
trump can't, he just can't
can't see the big man getting shakey
...just as I say that
great match this. not sure who I want to win.
those plants, i can't even
great match. well done to bingham.
hope he kicks fuck out of smurphy tomorrow.
And Ken Doherty sitting together in the studio genuinely remind of Beavis and Butthead
I was a bit worried that Murphy might be starting to run away with it early on, but fortunately that's not turned out to be the case.
I may have spoken too soon there.
84 centuries! ooft
And then granny him the morrow
Should make for a good day tomorrow
Bingham was struggling in the first half of that session; fair play to him to come back from that.
Such a pity he didn't get the 147.
never looked like it was on tbf
would still've been nice, though.
oh yeah, I was hoping he'd do it and he's definitely playing well enough.
just think the very best break builders always seem to get the reds out in the open pretty early on when they have plenty of opportunity to do so. there's others (like bingham) who'll leave a red on a cushion until the last shot. not much point in potting 14 reds and 14 blacks if you need a miracle on the last shot.
well, aye. but when the frame's already won and they're knocking in the last couple there's no point in making a song and dance about it if you've got a red stuck on the cushion that you're never getting to.
"he's being asked a question"
"he's come up with the right answers"
seems to be the new favourite phrase for the commentators
and it gets to the point where it's probably worth commenting on so one of them says something about the player having 'other things on his mind'
Supporting him over Smurphy though obviously.
hope they get willie thorne to fuck after the interval
John Virgo will be replaceing him and destroying any tension.
virgo is much better at building tension!
willie just talks over every shot explaining how he would have played it much better
WHERE'S THE CUE BALL GOING?
WHERE'S THE CUE BALL GOING?
Fuck off Virgo.
you can turn it off now...
that he could have made a bit more effort to post in it.
the best commentary team!
18-15 to Smurph.
I think Bingham will get at least one more frame, but Smurphy's undoubtedly on top atm. Even when he's missing, he's getting away with it.
17-18 to bullrun
dunno if that was the right shot, stu
he's looking a bit shaken the now, reckon he'll get it together soon though
when their heads start to go and they make mistakes / take risks / do wtf shit.
All tournament discipline out the window to win, love it!
he needs to put that weight back on
ooh jammy bastard
it's really shite isn't it?
should have gone with stuart bada-bingham
Lots of grown men wearing football tops in the audience, never a good look.
virgo gutted he didn't have time to get the catchphrase out there
so everytime Murphy's about to take a shot he tells a joke to make the audience laugh and put Murphy off
massive frame now
what's the longest frame of the tournament? this can't be far off
hawkins v robertson 70 mins 22 seconds apparently
I'm guessing it would've involved Peter Ebdon.
74 minutes 58 seconds, between Stephen Maguire and Mark King in 2009
Don't think that's happening now.
Really enjoying this frame though
And exhausting for Murphy trying to get out of all these snookers.
in calling this an exciting end to a world winning finale of a sport.
so many snookers!
ooft, smurphy miles away from the pocket there
smurphy looks completely drained and bingham looks like he's trying his hardest not to shit himself.
no way he's clearing up here. no way.
:D that wee smile when the red went in
well played big man
most players play for decades and never win it.
Go on ballrun!
lovely from him tho
"There isn't anyone that deserves it any less than Stuart Bingham" :D
jimmy white always looks sad
I'd look fucking miserable all the time as well
Will get a decent amount of facebook likes.
we can all achieve our dreams, no matter how long it takes. That's what I'm taking away from this evening.
Say, 6-8 hours of snooker. Every day.
I'd lose my mind within a couple of weeks, I reckon.
Absolutely delighted for him. Remember a few years ago when Mark Allen slagged him off and said he didn't have any bottle... Showed more bottle than any player I can remember at the Crucible for years. Murphy looked almost unbeatable and Bingham clawed him back.
Brilliant final - brilliant tournament. Gutted that Judd didn't get through myself but other than that - probably the highest quality Championships I've ever seen. Certainly not seen break building like that under pressure from as many players.
Fair play Bingham. Fair, fair, fair, fair play.
but something about the final of the WC always drags me in. Incredible snooker being played, great drama and tension and Bingham is such a nice likeable guy.
i wanted shaun murphy to win cause whenever the commentator on the telly says sean murphy my uncle's dog barks and goes wild and runs to the door as if sean murphy is coming to see her so he goes 'where's sean murphy, then?' and she jumps up and tries to look out of the window then waits at the door for him even though he's not coming to see her cause he's on the telly.
you can blame our sean for that
