Cos it's the 13th. That's not what Black Friday is is it?
'Passive Aggressive Friday' cos of all the passive aggressive emails flying around my office.
well, that and the fact that it's still thursday
And a lie.
the only way in which today might be called a "black" friday is that each and every friday the 13th is a highlight for all horror film fans, who tend to also favour the colour black. but come on, even as a devoted horror film fan, that just doesn't cut it.
in fact its an auspicious thing if anything.
Friday (Freyas or Friggas day) a sort of love goddess...in French days its named after Venus.
13th....prior to christianity it was often said that there were 13 months in a year (of course its not exactly this either....there are nearly 13 lunations in a solar year, but not quite.....it doesnt fit in neatly with our maths base) but lunar months are purer than human constructed months, which have ended up in this very convoluted manner just to fit in with the solar year.....which reflects the artificial administrational decision to have a 'solar' pov (often regarded as being a very male pov)
(with many regarding the lunar cycle being more female)
The superstition of the number 13 is a christian heirarchy trying to battle against precendant challenges to its 'do as the appointed definers of the divine instruct you' kind of approach.
In a way it could be regarded as a particularly suitable day to have a celebration of female stuff cos of the symbolic significance of the number and the dayname.
Its certainly not unlucky, that is just a christian boogyman thing
oohhhh, the Last Supper. Obviously.
Jesus WANTED what happened to happen....apparently, so surely thats part of the 'plan'
things like the last supper are woven into a body of reasons why 13 is 'bad'
but the underlying reason is that the lunar/solar interaction is NOT neat and sometimes there are 13 new moons or full moons in a year and sometimes 12.
Prior to Christianity, people who made astronomical observations could have said to be wise (like sometimes we say quiz winners might be) ...they may have been or they might just have been studied.
ANYONE could try top make these observations though, and the truth was apparent with your own eyes.......Christian church heirarchy relies on you NOT using that which is apparent, and emphasises that you must believe according to a delivered doctrine.....this is the nub and heart of what guided a lot of the evolution of european thought......perhaps this is why the classical greek sources held such attraction for many poets and thinkers, because it survived to a degree, the influences of the attempt of heirarchical authoritarianism to cover the whole of europe.
disputes and legends and takeovers, involving calendars and dividing up of the year and seasons etc......not just caused by having to use fractions (which will always needs adjustments over a long enough period....not just because the fractions are not finite, but because the speed of the earths day and the speed of the earth moon cycle and the speed of the earth solar cycle is altering slightly)
But.....where was I? Oh yes not just the mathematical issues of wanting precision and certainty, but also because (on the whole) europe at some point tended to have been influenced from cultures spreading from the south east to the north west .....the middle east agricutural year was very different from much of europe (although this also had huge variation with different seasonal importances) Egypt too, had a very different et of seasons/months......as peoples and lifestyles changed, so did their time measuring and meaning.....this obviously has to interact and adapt existing methods....a lot of mythology and iconography is based around explaining to a non literate population the relationships between these....there as much fluidity.
The many composite beasts, recently popularised to many, via popular entertainment media, so that many of you are now familiar with the term chimera, often have their origin in depictations of the whole year, with its seasons represented in some of their nature by beasts. There are many such calendar beasts....the noah story itself is probably based on a depictation of a forunner of deucalion which was a calendrical god, who was represented in his vessel on the sea as several animals (representing the season) (the sea was significant as to the ancients, they knew they could traverse all land, but presumed that although they could traverse some sea, that it encircled the earth and that the sun went on a yearly journey round it....agains problems reconciling exactly earthly days with this....but astronomicaly it was measurable that there was something weird going on with the sun/earth moving in a solar yearly cycle (beyond the seasonal weather results))
This might seem like I am just 'invoking' a load of stuff out of nothing.......BUT if you stop and consider that your ancesters, although they did not have the same schooling, they did have the same curiosity as you and I and they did have the same eyes and measuring and recording ability as you and I and they also had differentiation within the population of some people being patient enough to record night after night and day after day.......People did not live in a Vacuum before abrahamic religeon and before modern science.
Astronomy was the first proper science.
Eclipses were predicted way before Jesus (although some christians claim his prediction proved he was divine.....what it does is that he listened to other colleges of wisdom)
The earth was calculated to be round way before Jesus. etc etc.
I know my place.
I'm resigned to not being one now, and I am happy with that.
I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm being a better person today.
I'm trying to be sincere and freindly, and hopefully a little less annoying.
I have written some long posts today, it is true, but I am being sincere at least, in them, and I am not being falsely arrogant, particularly.
In this thread, Im trying to get across the enormity of how much discussion and politics and myth making surrounded the issues with solar and lunar and different agracultures calendars there was........because it is not gone into particularly in any of our current learning, instead there are mostly merely fragments of tales and stories that have trickled through the remnants of the dam of organised religeous resistance and obfuscation
very snort burp funny
not the one about the peado chemist though, not that one
do you want to just tell us?
'trendy bar told me i was too fat to come in - woman'
