None of this favourite cult wrestler bollocks, who's your go to WWF/WWE/WCW/ICW etc hero?
List 'em below, ta.
(note: stolen from the AE Podcast lads)
I'm sorry to hear that your dad finally croaked
He lived a full life on his own terms
Soon he'll be buried and eaten by worms
But if I could have a son as stupid as you
I'd have wished for cancer so I would die too
So be brave, and be strong, get your life on track
Cause the old bastard's DEAD and he ain't never comin' back!"
All three lads - "FUCK'S SAKE!?"
I'm guessing its about him being smacked up is it?
looks like that tree from guardians of the galaxy holding a brolly
I feel so bad for Sting in this match. Don't take drugs kids
oh man. they should have kept the lights down.
Great character(s), fantastic matches. Not the best psychologist but theres nowt like hearing that bell.
i've made myself sad by rewatching the bits with Jake at the end there now
love the "body slam to arm" at 2:00
Might look it up.
she was even shit at getting naked
indie points for Okada
Bruiser/King Kong Brody
Is there a general wrestling thread here?
Could you bump it an I'll post in it lots? I love wrestling
go to moniker for all restaurant reservations. Throw in a Kurt Henning once in a while.
'Table for 4, DiBiase.'
I thought Curt Hennig was called Curt Henning until around 2 years ago.
3. Kevin Steen (Owens)
Into Steen/Owens in NXT at the moment. His weird accent makes promos sound sinister.
mixed with his accent and vacant facial expressions make him a brilliant monster heel. I think he will be WWE champ within 2 years
I hope so but will Vince let him wrestle with a t-shirt? If not he's going to have to get ripped enough to be on the front page of M&F in his sixties. Pressing question.
it's Paul Heyman
but I've been watching some ECW on the WWE network and I really don't think it was that good.
Smackdown was brilliant when he was writing it.
ECW was hit and miss but i used to absolutely love it. Far too over the top and disgusting.
Watching some of the chair (and other object) shots in ECW makes me wince really bad to the extent that I choose not to watch it on the WWE Network. It's a shame because I know how many good matches there are in there that I'm missing
And then with Cyrus or Joel fucking Gertner towards the end? Genuinely never seen an ECW match with Paul E on commentary. But yes he is frankly everything good about wrestling.
Incidentally ECW has some of the best technical matches out there too. Alright not exactly world of sport but still.
I really dislike Joey Styles' commentary. Feels very one dimensional.
On a side note, how bloody irritating was Bill Alfonso?!
To me he opened up an entirely new lexicon of words that described what was going on in the ring. He wasn't scared into dumbing anything down and actually introduced North America to a lot of the terms from Japanese/Mexican styles as ECW got more wrestlers from there. Wrestling commentary is almost its own dialect. The story was there but kept to a minimum. Compared to Cole and Lawler, it's like the difference between the Shipping Forecast and Fox News.
Poor old D'Lo
from 1998 onwards, it's taking ages, i'm only at April 2009
D'Lo Brown was much better than I remember. That bullet proof vest shield was a really good look
or was that slang not a thing back then?
Is that a slang thing now? I never picked up on that.
having secret gay sex. On the Down Low/D-Lo.
don't think it always meant this, probably slowly morphed from meaning anything on the quiet to specifically being gay on the quiet.
Anyone watch Lucha Underground? Picks from there? Prince Puma (Ricochet) is great
Ricochet is quality though. I've seen some of his matches in PWG
Stopped watching before the horrendous events that ensued and only read about them several years later. Horrible stuff :(
and just any time someone mentioned wrestling you said that you loved Benoit and then couldn't figure out why people pulled a shocked face every time and then you went home and watched one of his matches and was all like "those dudes know nothing, he was a great wrestler"
He was murdered and framed by satanists anyway
His style caused all those concussions.
but at the time before the horror it was an incredible moment
Some of them were released on DVD after the fact. Pretty sure I have WWE dvds featuring a couple of his matches.
most of them on Vimeo/Dailymotion or places like that, or get the original (non-network) rips off.. insalubrious sites.
Benoit's death (and his family's) put me off wrestling for a good long while. That and Eddie's death a couple of years before. It was less about what he did, because what happened was obviously the result of being severely delusional and mentally ill. We haven't seen stuff emerge about what a terrible man he was in other ways (although that's not to dismiss the possibility that he was), and though it's very scary and very unpleasant to think that mental illness can cause that kind of break, it's unfortunately true. So that was one side of it: the other was that it just made me think badly of WWF and wrestling as a business in general. What kind of culture was in place there that his deteriorating mental health wasn't even seen? I mean, there's loads of questions about steroid use, the extreme kayfabe violence, etc - but, aside from all that, there should have been checks in place to look out for this stuff. The news about the NXT trainer recently - and the responses of people like Chris Jericho and Jim Ross - make it sound like the culture of wrestling can still be fucking horrible, even if they're better with wellness stuff.
I can watch Benoit's matches now. They're amazing. He was an incredible wrestler. What's most jarring is his 'cold-blooded killer' persona thing, which hits too close to the bone to pass unnoticed because he IS quite a scary man.
It's all a bit uncomfortable really. Absolutely wince when I see Foley taking all those unprotected chairshots to the head in that I Quit match.
like, having people imitate him and be all "I can't remember where I live, hurr hurr" and that. Bit gross.
this got pretty dark pretty quick
with the WWF paying tribute to him in a pretty big way, and then finding out what REALLY happened shortly after.
he did what?!?!
1. Stone Cold Steve Austin
2. Kurt Angle
3. You're crap
4. Trish Stratus / Jeff Hardy / Edge
7. The Undertaker
Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Jake The Snake Roberts
Jimmy Superfly Snuka
Just looked that up, this is basically like the Chris Benoit scenario someone described up there. Will no longer be listing Jimmy Superfly Snuka as a favourite wrestler. Also no longer sure i'll be able to perform the superfly splash with a clear conscience.
Yeah, it's whack that WWF/E still honours him as much as they do whereas Benoit is expunged.
interesting answer, were you big into him? I thought he was pretty bland.
Perhaps, he was pretty over for a couple of months. Watched KotR 1993 at the peak of his undefeated streak the other day and people were mad for him against Luger.
There are still people that reject that pro-wrestling is predetermined so I try not to assume anything.
Anyone actually looking forward to Wrestlemania?
Taker and Sting just a touch too old, Bryan overlooked in a spotfest, can't see how the main event can work at all (just two massive dudes no-selling everything?), and a crap battle royal.
I DID want to bump this thread though to see what y'all thought of this "documentary" thats been doing the rounds of late (at least 2 interesting points, various cameos), wrestling is everything but wrestling.
I finished watching that about 2 minutes ago actually. Very good, nice to see a new presentation of old storylines with a hint of reality and I actually found it so much more compelling than recaps and summaries that WWE do.
Wrestlemania - So so baffled that they don't want to put the title back on Bryan. For me the best thing that could possibly happen is an Inoki vs Great Antonio situation where Lesnar just destroys him and walks out as champion then WWE have to spin some crappy storyline when everyone knows what happened. It's amazing that the Battle Royal is almost legitimately being billed as "undercard guys that we can't think of anything else for"
haha of course
Maybe 'Mania won't be a foregone conclusion in that case
It was obvious during that awful ending to Raw that the crowd were more into Lesnar than Reigns. If Reigns was over, then it would be a no brainer to have him take the title, but being as he isn't, I can see them waiting. Or maybe this means Rollins will cash in, as he's well over as a heel, so they could sell it that Reigns beats Lesnar, so gets that accolade, but isn't ready for a title run, so Rollins gets that.
I'm interested to see how they manage to protect The Undertaker whilst also making Wyatt seem strong. Don't think it'll be a great match, but Wyatt has done great promos building to it, it'd be a great shame if they bury him just to let The Undertaker have redemption.
Really hoping they have Lesnar destroy Reigns and then we can forget about all the build up. Business as usual. Build up Daniel Bryan to win IC and have a competitive challenge, have a match for the IC and World titles, Lesnar win, unify them. Keep US title on Rusev. Have Kidd and Cesaro have a massive run with Tag belts, squash everyone else. Fantasy booking which will never happen but I think it would work.
Or, what WWE will probably do: Have Lesnar go over but keep Reigns as strong as possible, Rollins cashes in MITB, wins the title, Heyman sides with Rollins, Lesnar goes babyface, they'll make Reigns and Lesnar cut promos themselves and everything will suck again. Rusev will lose the belt to Cena or retain it through some cop-out finish, Daniel Bryan will win IC belt and lose it soon after relegating him, The Usos will win back tag titles snorrre
and both contestants got knocked out, maybe fell off the top. whilst they're both old cold, whoever is Money in the Bank runs down, cashes in, and wins by just walking straight back out the cage. The participants don't realise the title has changed and carry on fighting for it
wouldn't work would it
