Just had to go to Starbucks (no other choice) and they were unable to do me a flat white. These are end days.
lifes too short you losers
It was actually pretty decent. I though they all did them now?
and there's no one at the till
every time I've looked it up there's instant coffee dickwaving so hard I have to abort
only people i know who drink them self-identify as 'quirky' or 'creative' and are probably really into getting them for their personal brand
once a week they tell me how hard it is to get a decent flat white and how you have to wait twenty minutes and how it's shit and i just think... what's wrong with plain coffee?
and says I JUST WANT A COFFEE
what kind of coffee?
JUST A NORMAL COFFEE PLEASE
an americano then?
I JUST WANT A NORMAL COFFEE
I bet you areeee ;3
get some of the free milk and blow in it and add it to a espresso and voila flat white
aside from stupid Harris and Hoole
a latte with an extra shot in
just less milk
Better than the big three, and Pret.
they don't give you different amounts of espresso depending on drink size. so a small latte has the same amount of coffee as a large. that's ridiculous and gross
and the coffee's no better than average, they don't magically have superior push-button machines than anywhere else...
whatever drink you get, whether in H&H, Starbucks or wherever.
And if you think decent coffee is determined by a push button machine, then there's no point discussing coffee because I guess they're all the same.
we know the difference between a push-button and an actual espresso machine right
do you think they've filled it with a pint mug's worth of espresso then topped it off with milk?
Starbucks do 3 shots in a venti, 2 in whatever the medium one is. This is literally what I am saying. Should I say it again
I'm going to do some work
so therefore tastes more of coffee than of milk
Where does the flat part come into it?
which is a cappuccino.
between a coffee with milk and a latte
oh excuse me I dropped my fedora.
A white coffee is espresso, hot water, milk.
A flat white is espresso, milk.
Any other questions?
Genuinely didn't know what one was.
I do have a question actually - why do flat whites get so much derision? Espresso with a splash of milk. What's the problem?
I like them because I don't like how milky lattes or cappachinos taste and thats a huge amount of liquid I don't want to drink. A flat white is inbetween a macciato and a latte and taste more of coffee than it does of milk.
I like a big old Americano with some milk in it myself. Rich tapestry of life and all that.
(the long black didn't really take)
so certain circles will always mock them,
Ironically, these will def. be the same people who moan about "huge american coffees", when one of the best things about a flat white is that they're a sensible fucking size.
To be fair I've only really started drinking coffee in the last 2 years or so and feel quite behind the curve in terms of what coffee types there are and that. Very much got that stereotypical/annoying (delete as appropriate) trait of going into a Starbucks and wanting a coffee with some milk in it and being flummoxed as to what the fuck I need to do in order to get one.
There's no greater range of quality in coffee than cappuccinos.
How can it be that difficult?
It might be coffee for people who don't like coffee that much.
I found the best espresso in all of London and it's only a quid.
ironically, I have not yet had adequate coffee for this thread.
Please tell us of this wondrous place. Pretty excited that we're getting toward the correct price for an espresso (one euro)
(I have not woken up fully)
It is here: http://www.algcoffee.co.uk/
Take away only. Can also get a DOUBLE for £1 too, and a cappuccino for £1.20. It's probably my favourite shop.
Insane variety there, it's gonna take me years to get through them all.
Only been there over 100 years.
Must have walked past it about a million times before I actually noticed it was there. The shame.
She puts them in the freezer for later.
you are the only one who has failed
That's all you need, really.
If it's before work and I need a coffee - that'll do. If I'm `going for a coffee` (v. rare) I'll have summat like a cappuccino. Boat = pushed out.
not sure who won
espresso with foamy hot milk and a pattern on the top
it's a flat white as well, theres just less milk in a flat white and its foamier
the milk is thicker
i dunno i dont take milk in my coffee unless i have a latte
"microbubbles" or something?
anyway I'm not listening to you after you this'd Josh's terrible post
Also, which post? I this a lot of posts.
Macchiato is just a dash of milk foam, still would come in an espresso cup if you had a single. Flat white has more steamed milk and should have no foam.
"It is prepared by pouring microfoam (steamed milk with small, fine bubbles and a glossy or velvety consistency) over a single or double shot of espresso.
The beverage is typically served in a small 150–160 mL ceramic cup. Microfoam is used, and loosely frothed milk from the top of the steaming vessel is typically discarded or held back in the vessel while the creamy milk from the bottom of the vessel is folded into the coffee, resulting in a smooth and velvety texture. A flat white may incorporate latte art.
According to a survey of industry commentators, a flat white has several defining characteristics, chief among which is a thin layer of velvety micro-foam (hence the ‘flat’ in flat white), as opposed to the relatively thicker layer of stiffer foam in a cappucino"
Have definitely seen people argue that this should *also* be what a good latte is and therefore it is really just a small latte.
They've launched it like it's the saviour of the brand. Charging a fortune for it apparently.
How we laughed.

Try living where 95% of coffee (of the milky variety) is made with UHT milk.
I have recently switched from flat whites, to piccolos. Just to check, are they the same as macchiatos, just in a different language?
It's macchiatos and cortados that are the same in different labnguages, and a piccolo is an even smaller flat white, but with a bit of foam?
and has a bit less coffee. Not an espresso shot, a ristretto shot.
I also used to LOVE an espresso con panna but my stomach says oh no no no to dairy now, especially cream
to have in our coffee at home. Christ it is good. Amusingly, we ran out yesterday, but had groceries coming this morning between 6am - 7am. At about 6.45am I had the Aeropress all ready to go, but the cream still hadn't arrived.
When the doorbell finally went (6.57am), we basically snatched the groceries out the poor guys hands and started rooting through like a pair of spaniels that have smelt some raw steak.
Was quite the scene.
...is probably some pretensious roaster in Hackney, peopled only by dickheads.
Bet it is delicious though.
About my recent severe intolerance to caffeine. Bloody love and miss coffee. Decaf just ain't the same
that's very weird?
Yikes. What a lunatic.
It's something I wasn't aware of before, but now I am. That's my story.
Can you drink tea?
I used to have heart palpitations and dizzyness and it was put down to "too much coffee" so I quit all caffeine, and indeed it disapeared.
However, at that time I was almost exclusively drinking shitty instant, and slowly re-introduced proper coffee without ill effect. Three of those a day; no issues.
Did dhave to totally drop tea though, so is a thought it was to do with the tannins, although I always thought that was the capital of Estonia.*
*Really pleased with that, even though the spelling is probably wrong.
Like, I was having massive coffees from Costa and that was making me feel unwell, but then with instant shit it makes me feel just as bad. It lasts for a few hours too so I'm reluctant to experiment with it, because feeling rubbish is rubbish.
Also, best joke.
from good cafes and see if you have the same effect.
I've also concluded (see above) that I don't need all that milk, and this too has been a positive decision.
Thanks for the advice!
As that could flush out that it is the shitty chemicals in instant/bad coffee, or the dairy.
Look forward to hearing.
I love coffee threads, almost as much as I love coffee.
Going for a third in 2 hours. God bless my expense account.
and it was making my physically ill...it would also make me feel very dizzy and weird. Its hard to pinpoint the actual feeling it gave me, I just needed a lay down.
it's very sad
may as well just drink warm milk as have a latte or a flat white
Those fucking machines. The great ruiners of all cafes, alongside blenders for making smoothies. Be quiet you noisy cunts.
You could. Not. Make. It. Up.
This is all a bit intense isn't it? Perhaps it's too much coffee*
*there is no such thing.
seems like his kind of joint.
you could afford LME house prices
I remember when the Guardian jacked up their cover price to something ridiculous and Rusbridger defended it as 'no more than your morning coffee' and then had to apologise for being an LME cunt.
tend to do it whilst drinking 6 x £4 pints of Carling.
This morning I got a coffee from Puccino's at Willesden Junction. £2.25. Maybe the weekest coffee I've ever had. And my Mum used to get Nescafe.
is puccino's one of those station only jobs?
They have 'humorous' cups.
Being a Starbucks coffee, it tasted like shit.
What an error.
FFS, I just mean coffee like you make at home.
Fucking love white coffee from a machine. Tempted to go to a hospital right now!
Pret have them on the menu
