didnt you know those?
there are of course several ommissions.
srsly - this sort of list is a bit horror porny isnt it?
shouldn't these be surrounded by accompanying historical and political context.....this would perhaps result in more useful conclusions than just thinking the human race is inherently sadistic.
You have drawn a biased conclusion there.
Most of these killing techniques were practiced by some sort of power that incorporated humans as an aspect of itself.
To do many of the horror tortures, demonisation of the victims has often occured.
Horrible shit sometimes happens.....sometimes wars happen and with not all results being planned to be as viscerably horrible as they turn out to be, these results have fallout.
Humans can be turned into what we would describe as monstrous, perhaps some are born with more potential to do this.
Some horrible tortures/deaths were more common than those mentioned, and might have been used more regularly as tools of power systems, as controls or deterrents. When you have a deterrent that is ranged against a horror that is in opposition then the deterrents can escalate.
Let us take some other horrible tortures.......hanging drawing and quartering......used by british authoritarian heirarchical powers to demonstrate publically severity of some crimes (normally crimes that are not common law crimes, bu religeous or political crimes (against the head of state....a religeous crime being one where you culd just be the wrong religeon. ).....there wasa bit of escalatory tit for tat with Catholic and protestants getting hurt by the other......this was an organisational led sadism though....they got people involved by the people hearing of horrible things the 'other side' did to their sort.
Breaking on the wheel - a continental torture/death.....very very public.....not as evidence of sadism of humans.....but an example to people
strappado - a very widespread practice but not widely known it seems
tie hands behind back put rope round bound wrists....hoist in the air.....pull on legs if necessarry, or attach weights or haul up higher then suddenly drop and suddenly halt fall.......commonly used as no expensive equipment needed and applied to many who authorities do not like or if some official has to get 'a list of names'
Keelhauling - disobeying rules, needs organisation....very public for those concerned
Whipping - flogging....often public - normally associated with authority being given to whipper.....occasionally the punishment also intended for the whipper (given a choice to do the whipping to someone they love, lest someone more brutal gives the lashes.....an example in pirates of carribean)
Hanging (strangulation type) - public
Put in a cage hung up and left to die slowly - public ....public prevented from intervening at risk of them getting same treatment
assorted burnings - public
pouring odd things into odd places horribly - e.g. molten lead into ears and worse ------normally requires a system of authority to do this
In actual fact it is the absolute horror and revulsion that we feel that ois being worked on here.
All of these horror tortures also rely on us being not so much sadistic as EMPATHIC enough to feel horror, pity and fear, for what is happening to the person......with the objective of making us compliant and not willing to stand up against the system/authourity.........and this leads on to another aspect of NOBILITY about humans......some humans WERE/ARE prepared to stand up against or defy a power or authority, even if it might have meant dying.......therefore the power or authority reasons that therefore the resultant death must be sooooooo horrible that it would overide any notion of being prepared to possiblu forfit your own life.
(a less noble aspect, might be that some people commit crimes because the alternative might also have been bad.....steal to not starve....or kill someone (in authority?) cos they were going to kill you.....and therefore the authority/power again has to provide a further incentive)
The horribleness of torture and killing often also reflects the fact that humans have empathy an d nobility.....the fact that some humans can perform the torture and overide any empathy that they have, reflects not so much on humans being inherently sadistic, but on the lack of human empathy that systems can have, and the fact that some systems can force/persuade human agents to act without their human empathy.
the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and deciding to read about it, yes, the human race is pretty sadistic.
Really wish I hadn't read that at work. Don't really feel like doing anything now :(
The escape of a group of Poles (through the front gate no less) tells a pretty horrible tale:
1. "Although there's no real proof that it was used, Chinese Bamboo Torture took advantage of bamboo's propensity to grow quickly." Okay, so it's just made up?
2. "Like bamboo torture, the Iron Maiden is sometimes thought to be fictional." So, it's just made up?
3. Scaphism is a bit dodgy. As noted here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Scaphism the sources seem to be people who were enemies of the Persians and so inventing horrible ways their enemies treated them falls into Urban Legend territories.
The others are all pretty horrendous, it's true.
It will have happened but there is unecessary focus on this as it appeals (in its purity) to the modern dramatic mindset.
IN ACTUALITY the processes of Scaphism occured really commonly in England and other european powers and elsewhere.
Essentially just put a human in an imprisoned state where they will be killed slowly by corruption/body breakdown by natural means ...from bacteria, insects or birds/rats or ants
This was commonly (but obviously not dramatically enough for such crappy lists.....(Like I said ^ such lists are drama porn and fetiscistic in their nature, there is no context or real education involved)
In many dungeons that you might visit there may be a hole in th ground where they would just put people....this may be a very small hole with a much smaller opening....piss shit blood might run down into it......just left to die slowly from what ever.
you might be put in a personal iron body cage....just left....maybe give water food...let the shit and piss come out all over you and the iron where it is up against your skin and you will get infected, you will die slowly, rats and insrcts might nibble you too.
or put into tight iron cage and hung up outside.....same again with the piss and shit combining with rubbing iron probably being the method by which you might suffer die.......possibly being scavenged by birds before death
there are plenty examples of corruption being deliberately sped up on victims of various types......shit and rotting carcasses being the most easy and therefore the most common.
Im amazed no one has mentioned being smeared with honey and being pegged out and being left to the ants :D
(sorry, I deliberately and provocatively laugh there.......because Im laughing at the desire to find exotic torture methods and increase knowledge of these, which I find superficial compared with understanding the circumstances and how to prevent the systems, that often/normally persuade individuals to take part in sadistic practice on others)
On the whole I believe that the human race is not inherently sadistic (im posting this cos I guess no on will read my long post).
What we regard as sadistic is inherently against that which we feel is humane.....humans behaving sadistically is regarded as against how humans think that humans should behave. Humans can be compelled or persuaded by convoluted systems and circumstances to behave in a way that is counter to humane non sadism.....this is because power (social military political) systems do not necessarily reflect the empathy that humans can, these sorts of systems regard their own survival above that of human values, therefore they can/will persuade some of their human agents to act counter to their humanity that they would have were they not subjecct to the system or circumstance that they find themselves subject to.
2. Elephants were led into the room to stomp on the victim's head.
Akbar the great had a favourate elephant whose decision to crush or not was seen as the elephant judging.....At fatpuhr sikri there is also a large elephant swimming bath, which the elephants would go an clean themselves off in after a hard day a-killing
(is this what you guys want)
Actually Fatapuhr Sikri IS a really cool place to visit
