Watching that I thought (a) William Goldman? Well there's a guy who's written good stuff, and (b) this feels like a really hackneyed sort of plot.
Lo and behold it's a book from 1985 that was a 1986 Burt Reynolds movie. Dunno, it could be okay if the Stath isn't required to do much acting, but there's a general feeling of 30-year old sexist tropes about the film that just makes me lose interest already.

Stath doesn't always act awfully, as long as he's allowed to do 'brooding a bit and occasionally delivering slight dry wit' acting.
