Captain Cook birthplace museum in Marton.
Yarm is a lovely town with a railway station just outside.
If you are driving there, there are plenty of natural attractions on its doorstep – Saltburn for the seaside, Cleveland Hills for walking, Roseberry Topping for climbing and the Moors further south.

Middleton on Tees to Couldron Snout, via High Force and Low Force, is great, if you're up for a drive west.

and see where they filmed Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves. There's a waterfall there, in walking distance of the town.
Or go to Northallerton and get a series of infuriatingly sporadic busses to Osmotherly, that's in the Moors national park.
i love boro though
not very helpful, but all of my favourite things are museums or just little bits of land so maybe ask a local instead
My mums side of the family are from Middlesbrough. My cousin has terminal cancer so I've been up there a few times this year.
