Who's into this? I quite like it. Something really appealing about snooker players.
Playing and watching. The skill levels of professional snooker players are staggering.
if anyone is interested in snooker you should try and see it live at some point, it's really exciting. there's something about being packed in tight and having to sit really quiet and hold your breath that amplifies the tension. it can be amazing.
always really enjoyed having a go at it at the tennis club but never thought i'd enjoy watching it... whats next golf lol
...and professionals is probably greatest in snooker and golf.
i really fancy ronnie o'sullivan http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/30343354
Eight mins or something though? He's getting slow in his old age.
was one of the most jaw-dropping things I've ever seen live on TV.
Would love to see him play a season left-handed though...
That's my second-favourite Ebdon video: http://youtu.be/ob6i9VbfVXs
Disliked the bastard so much they couldn't be bothered to spell his name properly.
hate Peter Ebdon so, so much
who thought that Ebdon feathers his shots for so long as a kind of psychological warfare on the other player.
he's admitted he deliberately plays slowly against people to put them off
so much boiling behind those eyes. compelling to watch him, if not his shots
when he started throwing his chalk into the Crucible crowd and chucking his cue on the floor and stuff and they interviewed him afterwards and under extreme grilling from Hazel Irving he started crying and said he was just doing it all "for Julie and the kids".
defeat on the ponytail too.
ebdon wants to burst into pure light as the universe rains down around him
The Ebdon/Dott final.
A blacker hour for the game than Higgins in the Ukraine :(
No-one else comes close.
called our eldest Ronnie as 1, it's a great name, 2 we watched a lot of snooker
but it can be a sleepy/relaxing thing to watch, the hushed commentator and the gentle knocking of the snooker balls and pockets
great hangover watch aswell. something really soothing about the commentary.
*I'm a bit pants, highest break is 31
I've been on a 147 before, but I just jawed the first black
whenever they spread nicely for me (WAHEY!) i map my route around the table for the next 10 shots then miss the opening read
at the Crucible. It was really cold. Also, someone on the front row feinted mid-game. The man to next her shouted "Is there a doctor!?" in a really desperate, fearful voice just as Mark Selby was about to play a shot. Great times.
Don't like it on the commentary when Virgo says "How do you like them apples?". Other than that (and Willie Thorn), great viewing.
When she feinted did she go left or right? And why was a doctor required?
It has to be normals though, celebs would ruin it.
still watch from time to time although only really the world championship
Love, love, love snooker.
UK's is always a special time of year. Final always tends to be a ripper and it means Christmas is just around the corner. Beautiful stuff.
Judd seems to have got his game up. Him v Ronnie in the final could be lovely but the likelihood is that Ronnie will trounce him. Not sure there's anyone left who could give Ronnie a match with Selby and Robertson gone.
Gotta give a shout to Ali Carter as well. Testicular cancer followed by lung cancer. Gotten the all clear from both. Has been an absolute titan throughout. I've not been his biggest fan in the past, but total, total respect to the lad.
Essex Boyz rule the baize.
Big Break was still going in 2002! Kind of gobsmacked tbh
"In 1996 John appeared as a celebrity contestant on the Saturday night BBC light entertainment show, Full Swing, alongside John Lodge from the Moody Blues and former Arsenal goalkeeper Pat Jennings, he did not make the final."
everytime he just repeats the same old shite, Where's the white going??? Nowhere near the pocket you slackjawed, dull as ditchwater moron
Quite like the commentators on eurosport or whatever the UK championship has been on this week - remind me of the Mitchell & Webb sketches
I thought it was dishwater
I always say ditch, could be wrong?
dish is an american idiom
the best commentator
and bend down to take your first shot and you realise just how insanely big the table is and how good your hand to eye coordination needs to be.
real shame, he was such a decent player. could have gone on to big things
which is pretty damn good
The comeback against Ronnie was my favourite of the 3. Ronnie threw it away but he looked happier for Hunter winning it than he would've done had he won it himself! Was a really touching moment that.
Hunter would've been a World Champion for sure. His mentality, his game and his talent were all perfect for the long stretches at the Crucible. Reckon he might've played Stevens in a final before long y'know. That would've been a fucking classic.
Cried my eyes out when Hunter died. RIP.
I used to think i was quite good at pool........but looking down the length of a snooker table.......its hard enough just hitting your target ball, down the full length
unless yer watching Ronnie
Most top players have pretty similar shot times, depending on the game situation. It's Ronnie's combination of speed and fluidity in the balls which is breathtaking on occasion. He'll bang a long red in, get the black back on its spot, pick a few off the bunch and all of a sudden he's on 70 and the frame's in the bag.
No-one has ever made the game look so effortless. Selby's probably just as good points-wise when he's at the top of his game but every shot looks like an ordeal. Ronnie just glides through everything.
It really is astonishing.
where a right-hander would otherwise struggle really helps that fluidity as well.
Loved the fact when he first did it on telly, I think it was it was Alain Robidoux he dicked. Robidoux said he was taking the piss out of him and Ronnie was like `Ok mate we'll play again and I'll play the whole lot left-handed and still win`. But instead they got Ronnie to play some old geezer on the World Snooker board left-handed to prove he wasn't bringing the game into disrepute. Ronnie whitewashed him and World Snooker were like `erm, sorry about that`.
Fucking love the idea of someone being so gifted at their sport they have to have a disciplinary hearing about it :D
Now makes up a third of Robidoux's wikipedia page:
Imagine being a World semi-finalist and you're most famous for getting bent over by Ronnie playing left handed.
Robidoux reached the semi-finals of the 1997 World Snooker Championship, but subsequently slid rapidly down the rankings. He blamed his decline on the destruction of his favourite cue, which he referred to as "the Eel". The incident occurred after Robidoux returned the handmade cue to its maker – an elderly craftsman in Canada – for repairs. But when the cuemaker saw that the cue's butt had been adorned with the logo of Riley, a leading UK cue manufacturer, he took such grave offence he smashed the cue into pieces and sent the remains back to Robidoux. Several years later, Robidoux was asked whether the passage of time may have eased his anger towards the cue maker; "I want to kill him," was his heartfelt response.
Mind you, there's a lot to be said for cues. Stephen Hendry won all of his world titles using the same cheap cue he had since he was a lad. Got damaged when an airline put it in the hold once (led to a change in aviation policy too this - snooker players can now carry their cues on as hand luggage) and since then he won fuck all.
More riveting #cuebants - Ken Doherty's cue's actually bent. It's got a big old kink in it of a good cm or so. Says he couldn’t ever play with anything else. Geezer won 1 world title and got to 2 more finals playing with a bent cue. Crazy.
about Graham Dott smashing up his cue at a petrol station after a particularly bad run of form
If memory serves I think he smashed it up after the UK Championships in 2003 and then 6 months later was in the World final against O'Sullivan.
People often forget that Dott won the first 5 frames of that final too. Ronnie went on to win 18-8 though so...
who took a loss badly and decided to retire and give their cue away to some kid. a month later he had to go back and grovel with the kid to give it back!
Love snooker though, it just sucks you in. Ronnie is such a legend.
when not playing
when he used to hold a cup of warm water whilst in the chair.
I think his psychologist at the time had given up with it all and just trolled him and told him to do it.
I just don't find myself being able to passively watch him like I can everyone else.
Always remember John Parrot banging on about his theory that electro-magnetism was the cause of that thing when the shot goes wrong for no real reason and everyone else in the studio going awkwardly quiet until he shut up. Does this still happen?
There’s actually been loads of lab tests on this. Conclusion is still generally `fuck knows` but it’s probably either due to static build up caused by the modern thin-as-you-like cloths (like what Parrott was saying) or bits of chalk/dust stuck to balls causing a heavy contact.
Either way, no-one knows for sure.
I'm hungry now.
anyone in sheffield?
Used to love watching the snooker players in the Hallamshire Hotel
`Lads just seen Dave Harold and Darren Morgan in Starbucks`
Carling premier on tap for £2.60
He was walking down Division Street gobbing on the pavement.
Lyrics\video very much of the "acceptable in the '70s" variety. Released in 1987.
It's that it has inspired this thread, which is a wonderful safe haven from AQOS.
Such a great end to the game.
Also: "Will you be competing next year?"
"I'll compete anywhere I can easily drive to."
for some reason.
What I will say is that - though I find it unjustifiable when *any* sport causes the TV schedules to be messed up - it's even worse when said sport is snooker.
gone on for years now and i don't have the heart to correct her
Thought he was completely out of this but he's done really well to pull things back. Ronnie still the favourite though, obviously.
very watchable player, put those frames away very quickly.
just watching those Ebdon vids upthread.
someone should make some videos of him feathering on loop.
parrott & davis look so old :(
oof, what a long pot! not sure about his capability of turning into a killer break at this juncture...
I was about to switch off when Judd was struggling to win that frame at 9-4 down and looked like he'd given up. Glad I didn't, some superb play, love a final frame lottery.
Would probably have lost that match. He's sounding a bit downbeat but he's definitely so much stronger mentally than he used to be.
"None" when asked about positives, made me warm to him a bit more than I have in the past (and his comeback too). Andy Murray style post match interview deadpan there.
Said up there the UK Championship usually delivers. Best final I've seen in absolutely years. Judd was dead and buried. Then reeled off 5 frames of perfection out of nowhere. Don't think I've ever seen even O'Sullivan play like that with his back nailed so hard against the wall. Genuinely remarkable.
Fancy Ronnie to retain The Masters myself.
