Thoughts? I think my battery life is worse.
I have a Nexus 5.
Don't know why it doesn't appear on everyone's at once. If it's any consolation I think it might be shite.
to do with the wi-fi.
I best be getting this.
As my app developer brother in law insists it's one giant data-mining device, is he right?
I'm not naive enough to think that they're not all up to it, he just insists that Android phones are way worse than anyone else for it
I've come to terms with companies mining the fuck out of my data.
Home, work, home, work, home, work...
The location history thing is well cool.
Quite good going to a random day, and working out what you were doing through your location history.
I moved away from pure Android and went with an HTC One and their Sense gubbins. I was thinking yesterday of turning it into a Google Play Edition (making it a stock android phone) but realised that I actually *gulp* liked all the sense features that it has.
It'll update in January.
Can't see why I'd want another phone. Bloody marvellous.
apparently my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 3) might be going up to 4.4.4 sometime this month though, so good to see I'm over a version behind.
It's expected imminently on my Nexus 10 though. Exciting.
Loving all the "Material" redesigns of apps too. Good work, Google.
if there's anyone left who doesn't have it.
Quite fancy trying it out
send me your emails!
PM with your email if you want one.
took about 45 minutes to install etc.
only differences so far are that you swipe up to unlock.. you can have your notifications appear on the locked screen and things are a bit of a different colour.
Oh and your browser is nested in with your tabs.. which I didn't like.. but im sure I'll get used to
Hasn't shown up for me yet.
My 4.4.4 does this too.
cos i just tried it. pretty neat.
which is kind of annoying but lets them pull the plug if people start reporting problems. Once the update is out there for a device though you can do it yourself by grabbing the OTA zip file and following some not-too-bad instructions.
I really like it, but it still feels a bit unpolished. For one thing I have no idea where the orientation lock has gone. But the notifications/settings shade is great as are the lockscreen notifications. I'm going to try out the combined apps/tabs thing, but I dunno about it for now.
The battery saver is useful. It's properly aggressive: my last 15% lasted ages the other day with it on. The smart lock things are also really good: it either uses your face, bluetooth or location to keep the phone unlocked when you're using it or in a certain place.
- The keyboard is different. Could be better, it's too early to tell. In the meantime I have to learn to use a new autocorrect system which has led to some hilarious errors.
- The chrome tabs thing is absolute bullshit.
- The smart lock thing sounds good but it's not immediately obvious to me how to get it to work.
The problem is (and always has been with the multitasking thing) that no-one actually wants to go through the task of closing them. Something that makes that take even more onerous is just silly. And now, worst of all, the 'close all tabs' option is gone.
Chrome needs a rethink.
'merge tabs and apps' option under settings..?
I am a berk.
that's one of the things that gets my back up about the development of android: google keep moving around/renaming options. Apple have done a great job of updating while staying consistent and it's frustrating that google can't manage the same thing.
it was supposed to be to colonel_getafe above. i can't even say i was posting it on my phone which would have been like relevant
Some of the things Google have surpassed Apple on wouldn't be possible if they haven't been willing to change things and go through a bit of pain - I can't for the life of me see why Apple are willing to keep using such a backwards keyboard as the default in iOS8.
On the other hand, it's ridiculous that Android ships with two gallery apps, two SMS apps etc before Sony/HTC/Samsung etc duplicate everything again. Part of it's legacy of Google's engineering led approach and the fact that Android 1.x was very rough & ready, so lots of things needing fixing and to be made consistent - although I found the 2.x releases pretty usable personally it arguably wasn't until 4.0 that it came close to Apple's level of usability in general.
Completely unrelated but just noticed my Z3c has a hairline scratch / crack on the front screen since I came into work this morning. I've not dropped it or owt. There's a whole thread about screens and backs cracking randomly on their own over on XDA :(
sounds bad sorry PN.
for what it is worth i managed to embed a 1.5'' inch scratch on the back of my htc at the weekend. i thought that the aluminum was bombproof. :(
(ordered one, but it was shite)
tbh it's hardly noticeable when the screen is on, but I've now also noticed tiny scratches on the back of it too. Dunno if you've seen one, but it's all glass. I obv don't care about the back ones, but the one on the front is concerning. Touchscreen works fine and you can only feel it if you rub your nail over it (not a fingertip). I've not dropped it at all, nor do I keep it anywhere with keys or anything so god knows how it happened. Have contacted Sony but worried they won't give a shit because of the marks on the back.
Doesn't work, but you can see what I was going for.
you didn't even This it.
Just use your nose.
in front of it to unlock it yet..?
but I tried an old facebook profile picture on my laptop. It didn't work but it might be because of slightly differing hairstyle/beard.
but I've only just (in the last 10 days) got my first smartphone... they're bloody ace aren't they?
cos my old phone is dying. Its a moto g 4g and I thought it would be dead exciting but its not really is it, its just another useless gadget. I've just sent messages and phoned people like I always did. I downloaded strava and worked out how far my commute is and now it feels like I've run out of things to do and wasted a hundred quid.
What can you even do with these things apart from play mindless games like angry birds and twitter
Maps / Citymapper
Probably need to see it less as a "useless gadget" and more as something quite helpful.
browse the internet.
online banking in your pocket
use it as a Dictaphone
Basically, for the cost of an iPod nano, you get:
- an MP3 / media player
- a phone
- a sat nav
- a 5MP camera
- a basic games console
- an internet browser
- shitloads of other stuff depending on your interests (I use a running app, for example).
It's all your 'useless gadgets' rolled into one.
• The new notifications shade doesn't make use of the N10's massive screen. Also the notifications are white, which looks odd against the dark background of the settings thing, and also means if any of the icons in a notification were previously white, they don't show up any more which is fucking shit.
• I like the new keyboard and the new symbols for back, home and multitasking.
• Lockscreen is cool but nothing that Dashclock etc wasn't doing before.
Haven't really played around with it enough, though I did try typing this out on it this morning and Chrome crashed.
Don't like it, cheers
My alarm didn't go off this morning, but it still thinking it's set.
Something with the keyboard autocorrect has changed and I'm now typing like PO.
My Nexus 4 is now really, really slow. Horrendous input lag in Chrome in particular.
Going to spend this evening rooting around to see if these are common issues and how to fix them. Bah.
but worth a search to see if they're common issues.
The new clock icon is dreadful, but I'm a big fan of the keyboard. Apple's one feels prehistoric when I switch to my work phone now.
Not part of 5.0 I know, but also finding Inbox quite handy for doing email triage.
So generally I really like it and am much more on top of email now.
Given that it's meant to essentially turn your inbox into a to-do list, and you're meant to have "reminders" in there as well as emails, it's a massive problem that you can only see about four emails on my phone screen at once, because of all the nice design. Compound this with the clever/pretty preview stuff, and if someone mails me with an image in the signature I'm seeing about 1.5 emails per screen.
rather, the world has gone insane.
gave up with the inbuilt app and went to the Yahoo 3rd party one after losing the will to live with it
what niki said.
quite often find that it won't allow me to open the screen with all my open applications after going into the settings menu. generally there's a bit more lag and i've definitely found that the battery life isn't quite where it was before. The battery saver mode could be useful but i'd like to edit the settings of it so that it could pull notifications for the apps that I wanted it to like whatsapp, rather than having to open it to find out if I have any messages.
I was getting about 8 hours max out of one charge at the end of my N4's life. What's it like for you now?
but that's if i'm at work and not really using it. If I was out and about i'd expect it to die by evening time.
I have a charger on my desk at work, so not really an issue then, but if I used it on my commute into work, a little bit during the day and back home again it'd be dead by the time I get home. Not really good enough, but it's always been bad.
I don't understand the current fetish for massive power draining screens and paper thin phones when hardly any of them last for more than 8 hours if you actually want to use them.
I've smashed my moto g, and this year's replacement model has a bigger screen, and consequentially a shitter battery life.
Therefore the most likely replacement is a z3 compact which is actually still small-ish and has a 2-day battery. It's mental that I need to buy a flagship phone just to fulfil those criteria.
and that's with extended battery or whatever it's called switched on.
BTW, this is a pretty good deal if you're looking for it on a contract: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sony-xperia-z3-compact-black-free-handset-19-99pm-1000-cross-network-mins-unlimited-2051116
but I'd need to switch out the minutes for data. 1gb is not going to hack it. =(
If you do get one, I cannot stress enough that you should get a case AND a tempered glass screen protector for it. It's a delicate bastard.
suddenly this phone is looking like a bad choice for catstros. >[
My phone is currently with Sony and I'm waiting anxiously to see if they'll accept my warranty claim :(
and then it turns out to be a stinking pile of dog do.
and I couldn't fault it before it broke, but apparently there seems to be a fault with the glass on some which were manufactured between particular dates.
Make of that what you will. It's still arguably the best "small" screen Android smartphone around and suits me just fine THANK YOU.
They cost fuck all.
That's with heavy use, 5+ hours screen on time. Don't think I could go back to such shite battery now.
It is more laggy than before and some apps/games are downright unusable now - and this on a Nexus 5. Hopefully they sort it out.
Keyboard is better as well. :\
Infrequent 3G connection, texts not coming through. These could be network issues, obvs, but given that turning the phone off and on again sometimes temporarily fixes it, i don't think so.
YouTube won't even open. Dunno what other apps are playing up.
This. Is. Wank. Factory reset tonight.
I really like it. I wouldn't say my battery life is any worse either.
google are locating me, but when I go to the options it says I've got location services turned off. Cheers google!
Well, my phone-related ones, anyway.
What an absolute joke. Although they are sending me a new one for free as it's obviously a known problem.
Back up your phones before updating, pals. Or just wait for 5.1.1.
Double lock screen problem.
Hate the notifications now. Why's the settings thing black and the actual notifications white? Shite.
Transparent notification bar now defaults to whatever the colour of your wallpaper is, but if it's multicolour it takes the colour it is on the top left. Looks shit.
Dunno what they've done to the keyboard but no fuck off.
Chrome tabs now appear in the ALL APPS screen, not THE FUCKING APP ITSELF. Absolute wank. Means if hours ago you were looking at a tab and want to retrieve it it'll be about a million apps away at the top and you have to scroll through other shit you've got open. Urgh.
just go into Chrome and change the setting.
Anyone using their stock keyboard's a mug. Get SwiftKey mate. Totally excellent.
yeah I might look at different keyboards
I might just be too used to it though - but can't go back to stock keyboard.
but 5.1 fixes my biggest issues with it, which included the non-dismissable notifications and the uselessness of the quick settings area. The memory issues seem to be better for me too, and my battery life is lasting the day again.
It's absolutely fine you massive babies.
Makes it nicer.
That said - I don't have it on my OnePlus One yet.
Don't need it mind. Cyanogenmod is fine.
one coming right up.
I've got 5.0 on my nexus 7 (the latest version) and tbh it honestly feels slower.
I think you'll find your battery life is better.
Def the best Android yet.
Had no trouble with the keyboard, I think it's actually better.
Everything else is shite though and my battery life is definitely worse. :(
software whatever it was. I downloaded lollipop this morning and my phone turned bloody hot to the touch. Subsequently I got a further software upgrade of Android 5.0.2 pushed to me by EE just now. Will this improve stuff? Am I going to get crap battery life now like you guys have? It's also turned the colours of certain screens into some sort of Green Party-Lib Dem. Bad bad software update.
not sure how to tell.
Seems ok. 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars.
then definitely check to see what's been using the battery up.
There are fixes for most things - Greenify is quite a good app. Will stop many things trying to launch, though really works best if your device is rooted.
...i had a few issues.
Did a back up - restored the phone and it has made the world of difference.
Battery lasts a LOT longer....I was getting to 3pm and on about 12 percent after update.... now its still on about 70 percent late in the evening.
Things were being a bit slow and sluggish but this also got sorted.
Yes its a massive pain in the arse but do it.
Might be my imagination, or sweet relief after using my shitheap laggy tablet while waiting, but if feels snapper.
