have you ever done it? Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker? what are your hitchhiking stories?
wouldn't recommend doing it alone though. both times i've done it i was walking in really remote rural areas (orkney and the finnish part of lapland) and needed to get back to take shelter. other times i've taken free lifts off strangers to go to specific places and told other people where i was going and given them the name/number of the driver. once got a lift off a guy by myself and he tried to kiss me.
cause if i was a male driver and i saw someone looking for a lift, i wouldnt want to look creepy but at the same time wouldnt want an actual creep to pick them up.
no hitch-hiking stories here
Once in Portugal and once in Malaysia, both last year while I was travelling/being a bum.
Both times I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, so hitchhiking was literally the only option. The time in Portugal I was on my own. I'd gotten a bus from Lisbon to a remote village, as I was due to start doing some charity work for a couple of weeks, but had gotten dropped off at completely the wrong place, so had no idea where I was. Some guy, who only spoke about 3 words of English, asked me where I was going as I was clearly lost, offered me a lift and was one of the nicest people I met on my whole trip.
That said, I did get petrified at certain points, as I'd gotten into a car with a guy on my own, and wouldn't hitchhike on my own again unless I was in dire straits (which I was then).
The second time, in Kuching, Malaysia, I was with two other people and the couple that picked us up were super nice. It depends where you are I suppose, and who you're with. It's very common in New Zealand, apparently.
I went to I hitched. Once a shed on wheels picked us up and drove 20mph on the hard shoulder all the way there constantly brewing tea on some contraption where the gear box should be.
Got a lift back one year by some maniac driving 100mph plus ordering me to 'skin-up' (I had no weed).
there are of course horror stories but it is so so so common the odds are with you.
In cuba it is mandatory, people just stand by the side of the road and you can report people if they don't pick you up. However I don't think they want tourists doing it, was never told this but just from the vibes I get off people.
I think it was in the form of a race, they had to get to Amsterdam. They struggled for several hours in a spot, then eventually got picked up near a motorway. They did make it to Amsterdam but I got the impression it is a lot of lonely waiting then sitting in lorries.
The only time I have considered picking someone up was near Lands End, they looked like a normalish teenager. I figured public transport was shit and they just needed a lift. By the time I had mulled this over of course, they were a twinkle in my rear view mirror. I am unable to drive at the moment but I shall make a resolution to pick up the next hitchhiker I see.
We worry about them being nutters, but surely those hitchhiking should be more worried about being picked up by a nutter?
