Tahitians or opticians in the world?
(how do you like that Saps?)
I'll just ask someone else, guys.
183,645 citizens of Tahiti in 2012.
maybe a third of all opticians are vacancies so that would make 106 opticians in Scotland so one in 47 people is an optician. 7 billion punters worldwide so that makes approx 148,936,170.21 opticians which is a few more than Tahitians!
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of opticians is expected to grow by 29 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. - See more at: http://www.oaa.org/opticianry-defined/becoming-an-optician#sthash.Mwdp8FXf.dpuf
but I don't care if I have. I once overheard a Scottish tramp with thick Scottish accent saying "I COULD BE FROM TAHITI FOR ALL YOU KNOW". It's a shame there was nothing about an optician in that anecdote, it would've been more relevant to this thread.
i was just back from my holidays in bora bora (bore bore more like), and BLIND drunk.
Look how many specsavers branches there are in the UK: http://www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/full-store-list
Confirmed national figures for opticians are difficult to access, but they include, for example, 26,000 in the UK and 67,000 in the US. This initial total of 93,000 might already suggest the total number of opticians worldwide will be greater than the global number of Tahitians (see below). However, this fails to take into account the disproportionately high number of opticians in the developed world. A better indicator for much of the world would be the figure for India – 10,000 against a population of 1.25bn. This is a remarkably low figure of 8 opticians per million people as opposed to an average of 244 opticians per million people as an average across UK & US populations. Making the reasonable assumptions that the latter ratio is indicative of the proportions applicable to the developed world and the former to the developing world, that allows us, using the approved definitions of those regions provided by the United Nations Development Programme, to calculate a figure of 247,216 opticians globally. (This is derived from the current estimated world population of 7.125bn people, 806m of whom will provide a total optician population of 196,664 people while the remaining 6.319bn will make do with just 50,552 opticians between them.)
Of course, as we all know, the population of Tahiti as of their August 2012 census was 183,645. If we make the reasonable assumption that the same annual growth rate indicated in the decade since the last census (2.1%) has continued, then that gives us a current population of approximately 192,087. Needless to say though, not all of the inhabitants of Tahiti are Tahitian, nor do all Tahitians live in Tahiti, and in fact the country’s brain drain has been much-lamented, so we also have to factor in the historic cumulative net emigration rate (also based on state-approved estimates in the 2012 census results) of 28.7%. That brings us to a current global population of Tahitians of 247,216.
In other words, it’s a dead heat!! Great question.
I shall update the figures.
No need to inform me of the deaths of any Tahitian opticians. No net gain. Many thanks.
looks like everything checks out here. Great work.
I'd already cracked it up here: http://www.drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4454776#r8314819
Sorry to have wasted your time.
Shit, I completely forgot to account for anti-matter opticians.
But Shia Labeouf wrote it on a napkin in his own blood and it perished pretty quickly.
and all opticians were Tahitians and there were no others... just imagine. Other countries could be all Doctors and all administrators or whatever... fuck.
Someone get me Michael Bay on line 4 NOW!
and another DiSer who has a director's name
(of Smeen Smeets fame)
does DanielKelly think he's as good at optometry as the average member of the Tahitian opticians guild? He probably does, the wanker
